For people who are wondering what sets Helpful apart from all the other support tools out there, do note that this is built entirely on Assembly. This means, its ownership is split between the people developing it. Hopefully, this will lead to new open-source business models, which we can all agree on, are a healthy alternative.

A month ago, in a similar thread like this one, someone posted their side project [1]. It looks a lot like what you described. Sort of like flattr for musicians. Me personally, hope that it will get bigger exposure and gain traction. It seems like a viable model.

I was looking for MAX last week, but I couldn't remember the name. I finally found it and was thrilled when I discovered there's an open source clone called MAX Reloaded [1].

I recently moved from Windows to Mac and this was one of my top 5 problems - not having a decent image editor. I used Paint.NET while on Windows for the occasional "magic wand" work but on Mac every app was either too limited to use or . I've tried GIMP (pre-2.8) but its "multiple windows" and crooked X11 was a huge turn-off. With all that being said, the new GIMP (which is in a single window) was a huge surprise. Since I installed it, I haven't looked back at my old Windows desktop machine.

I lived in the Tenderloin for 3 months during the past summer, one block from the shelter on Polk st. I've had conversations with numerous homeless people (while waiting for a bus) and all of them had an interesting story to tell (whether it's true or not, that's another issue). What really struck me was that every homeless is homeless by his own choice. They have families (which could help them) and money and yet they choose to sleep on the street. I've never had an incident with any of them.

One thing I didn't noticed until I moved out is that Tenderloin really teaches you to be humble. I would recommend anyone considering to start the next (insert buzzword here) startup to spend a month living in Tenderloin. You'll learn a lot about real-life problems, not just 1st world problems.

I'm annoyed by the exact same thing. Chrome Beta is good, but it is still a beta. For some sites, I've found the built-in browser to be better. A proper UX solution, in my opinion, would be using a 3-4 seconds dialog ("Opening with Chrome") with a Change button. That way, you can change the default app at the moment you notice it. Of course, it comes with a delay, so it wouldn't work well for others.
