C is a subset of C++

It is not, they diverged since decades now.

Still, even if this was the case, the programming styles are so different that there’s nothing to gain considering them as any more similar as any two other languages.

I never understood how Jung is more unscientific than Freud.

At least: I don’t see this choir of “but it’s antiscientific!!!” cries when Freud is discussed, but still there’s no evidence whatsoever for the tripartition of self which is at the very base of Freud’a theories.

The super-ego is no more scientific than synchronicities!

Don’t use content likely to offend people based on race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, or political views.

Stating that I voted for Trump (I didn’t) is likely to offend many people.

The breadth and vagueness of these CoCs is astonishing!

The then-go-somewhere-else argument also does not apply, since de-facto monopolists are also starting to apply similarly silly CoCs…

less durable product that's many times less harmful to produce.

A big citation needed here… I am not sure boots made from locally-sourced leather are less sustainable than boots made from synthetic fibers and petroleum derivates some place in South-East Asia.

One of the things I love about leather is it’s extreme durability!

I’ve been wearing the same leather boots for 4 winters now, a leather jacket is steadily approaching the 10 years marks.

More generally: sustainability problems can be mitigated or solved by buying stuff that lasts, see for instance /r/BuyItForLife

Is mushroom leather as durable?

Since they don't say what happened, I can only speculate.

The usual CoC violation: probably someone in the Core Team made a statement (outside the Rust community and not speaking officially) that does not align with the progressive political thinking.

You say that the larger number of men in tech with respect to women might be due to biological reasons? CoC violation, fire the enemy of the people!

You say you voted for Trump? CoC violation, fire the enemy of the people!

You say only biological women are actual women? CoC violation, fire the enemy of the people!

When there was a huge push to adopt CoCs I warned everyone I knew about the clear potential for abuse by the leftist (who also incidentally happen to be the ones to back CoCs). In particular a CoC should cover only actions performed in a community, no-one should be banned to contributing to a project because of what they write on Twitter, for instance!

Hacker news values intellectual curiosity, so why dismissing something so interesting as a waste of time?

Moreover, the code is beautifully written, the project is useful and the rules of HN ask you not to dismiss project just the way you did.

You didn’t understand my comment.

Their write up seems to imply that the device wouldn’t charge if the battery is completely drained.

It happens sometimes in cheap devices in which the charging logic is managed in software, but it’s a terrible design decision.

If that’s the case, a better battery will mitigate the problem but the terrible design remains!

we found a number of units with batteries so drained, Playdate wouldn’t power on at all — and couldn’t be charged

Wait, wait, wait… Are they saying that if the battery is too drained the device will not charge? It that’s the case, it’s a terrible design decision!

Also, isn’t the + shaped control a Nintendo patent?

Wonderful write up!

This part hit on me

Getting on the roof was illegal, of course, and required a bit of climbing walls. But who cared? Delivering an internet connection to our friends and other students was much more important

It’s not the point of the linked post, but it made me think about the value of friendship.

Nearly everything in life is transactional, even romantic relationships can be quite transactional, but these people were risking their lives climbing walls just to see their friends have Internet. And of course also for the intellectual challenge of providing Internet to the building!

Probably friendship is the purest human feeling there is.
