I am dumbfounded (or just dumb), it seems like some entity said that it is the governing body of the English language, trademarked the English alphabet, and now everyone that wants a T-shirt containing a letter of the English alphabet have to pay royalties. Is this correct, or am I missing something obvious?

PS: It looks worse really since looks like the concept of emoji predates what is usually called emoji these days, so it is more like some guy said yesterday he owns letters™, just for collecting rent on everything that uses letters.

The system sees small business/individuals always as offenders of the property of powerful enterprises, deserving of nasty punishment for this nasty crime.

There is no solution really. Boycotting is only useful if one upholds it despite its consequences. My experience shows that after a brief period of virtue signaling, things go back as usual.

Toei is doing a "Display of Power", and because the company holds the rights to entertainment that is very dear to those who consume it, if Toei fells like doing it, Toei will issue some corporate apology and move on.

Youtube does not care if one of its non-corporate users is going through even though Youtube itself created the conditions that put that user in the situation.

N.B: I know, "youtube needs to do that in order to be a safe heaven", blah blah blah... I think my point stills holds.
