Hackernews has plenty of posts that have nothing to do with digital platforms.

If people can post about China's human rights violations against Uyghurs, the same can be posted about Israel's human rights violations in Palestine.

The anti-theft argument is a bit over stated.

1. The thief would probably still find the tracker.

2. You would probably still lose connection/track of the device.

3. Police would probably still be reluctant to travel to a private residence somewhere and try to find it.

4. Are you going to physically find and confront a criminal yourself?

Encrypt your digital devices, have backups and insure anything valuable. That is the better than using some tracker and spending your time trying to chase down criminals.

Hopefully the obnoxiously loud people will learn that no one wants to hear their crap at work (or anywhere else).

Your take on race? I don't care

Your take on gender? I also don't care

Your take on politics? Nope, don't care.

Insert cause here, still don't care

I go to work to do my job and get money. When some person starts carrying on about politics, I walk away.

If I wanted to engage with this stuff, I would on my own time. I shouldn't be dodging it at work.

Is it an American thing to vigorously defend corporations from accountability to the public?

Twitter and even here seem full of people defending Peloton when clearly there have been enough incidents to warrant some design changes.

It seems like a lot of people want to advocate returning to a time where businesses had little responsibility when it came to the dangerous products they churned out.

There are plenty of developing countries where this is still the case and lots of people/children unnecessarily die as a result. I imagine it would be hell to live in a place where many innocuous products are dangerous and people reguarly lose their kids. I don't want to live in that world.

HackerNews usually: But they're a private company, they can do what they want!!!

Reality is Spotify and other companies are trying to corner the podcast market, this is going to lead to more censorship in this space. You might be inclined to say creators can just avoid these platforms but it will become harder not to use those platforms when looking for an audience.

Rogan despite portraying a right leaning / freedom of speech angle doesn't actually really care so it's not surprising he just grabbed the money and accepted censorship.

Et Tu, Signal? 5 years ago

Don't like it? Don't use it.

Afterall, private organizations can do what they want according to the mantra repeated here. At least that was the defense for social media organizations implementing censorship and bans.

99% of the opposition to Signal integrating cryptocurrency payment seems to be from people who generally disagree with the idea of cryptocurrencies (the article has this position). These arguments of course are veiled as keeping the Signal app "pure" and focused on encrypted messaging. I've rarely seen people kick up this kind of fuss with other messaging features so it just reeks of being disingenuous.

At least be honest and just say that you disagree with cryptocurrencies, instead of dancing around it with other strange arguments / conspiracies about government attention.

Australia is riddled with this kind of Chinese pressure, particularly at universities.

My university went as far as to install an ugly out of place confucious statue. This was followed by being pressured to cancel a talk from the Dalai Llama. Then more recently PRC supporting students engaged in suppression of pro Hong Kong students with no consequences.

It's really not a cool way to think about this.

People all around the world have state sanctioned freedom of speech but are oppressed by the majority in their country.

This infantile view of freedom of speech is simply a way to pretend you care about freedom of speech while sanctioning other ways to silence/punish people. Even when that punishment is completely disproportionate too.

This is the same idiotic phrase as "Freedom of Speech is not Freedom from Consequences".

You know who else thinks this way? Many repressive countries such as those who control how women / minorities / etc behave in public. It's essentially mob pressure and destroys genuine freedom of speech.

You're basically expressing a threat that will be used against people who openly do not agree with the majority.

This kind of rhetoric is subjectively aimed at driving white people out of the workplace. As a white person, would you honestly be comfortable working in such a company?

The thing I find funny about HackerNews is how you see plenty of wasteful hobby projects hit the main page.

Yet someone using a crypto miner to generate heat / side money is somehow a terrible project.

This is not necessarily evidence.

Your tinnitus might have just become noticeable with the Airpods or perhaps something completely unrelated impacted it.

I had tinnitus flare ups during lockdown so went to both an audiologist and an ent specialist (had a mri too). I'm a heavy user of ANC devices as a means to relax/cope with my environment so I suspected the devices.

Professionals told me that there was no hearing damage and that my flare ups were likely connected to clenching my jaw and stress. I mentioned my devices/usage to my health professionals and they said there is no reason for concern.

After some physio I'm much better off.

If people are working from home in quieter environments where they're not exercising while using ear pieces / headphones more often, it shouldn't be surprising that tinnitus is becoming more noticeable. This is also during a pretty stressful time too, which doesn't help with tinnitus.

Apple has sold about 90 million of these things.

At 600 it is far more likely people have just noticed they have tinnitus or have had damage from some other exposure.

For instance I have tinnitus and it also flares up due to my jaw clenching issues. I suspected my AirPods at one point as I'm a heavy user of ANC devices and struggle with city noise (I wear them a lot even at home). My specialist basically said it wasn't the issue and to see a physio-therapist and sort your jaw. My hearing tests also came back perfectly fine.

Is it just me or are a lot of people going overboard with hand sanitizer?

I find it odd to see people applying hand sanitizer even though they've just left home and are visiting one place. Then you see people constantly applying hand sanitizer when entering shopping complexes and visiting various stores.

Personally, I try to limit my use of hand sanitizer because I have sensitive skin. Also I'm in Australia where we don't have major outbreaks right now.
