Using map, fold etc. is not the hard part of functional programming. The hard part is managing effects (via monads, monad transformers, or effects). Trying to convert a procedural inner mutating algorithm to say Haskell is challenging.

There used to be a YouTube subscription called Premium Lite which was just ad-free YouTube. I happily paid for that until they shut it down and tried to force the much bigger subscription on me (nothing else in premium is relevant to me).

Now I use smarttube which is not only ad-free but also has tons of nice features which YouTube will never deliver. However, should premium lite comeback I would pay for it but keep using smarttube.

The first facebook issue that you mention is unrelated to the App Store, it’s an OS restriction. Side loading won’t affect this.

Apple can clearly make the OS secure/privacy friendly if they want to. The only layer of security that you may lose is the dubious “review” process, which clearly doesn’t do anything considering the amount of scam apps on the store.

C# may fit your needs, depending on what you consider a simple language and easy concurrency. The language doesn’t feature any hard to understand concepts. Concurrency is very good, but only async has built in syntax sugar (I believe go has syntax sugar for channels or something?).

The executables may be a bit larger (I’m guessing).

Did you compare it to F#? I’ll probably try to learn an ML language next year and without doing much research F# looks really nice since it gets all the .Net benefits.

Thin-and-light would mean smaller battery and harder to cool though? It seems consumers are just uninformed and instead buying the sleekest option.

Then it sounds like the person voided the warranty by assembling incorrectly, not by opening it.

I’m sure that if people opening their devices, breaking them, and expecting warranty to cover it is such a big problem, then there is enough financial incentive to find an actual solution.

That equivalence is awful. What is the profit margin of airlines vs the app store? There is a real cost to an airline seat, and there is a real cost to publishing an app on an app store (and all that it entails). The difference here is that airlines have tons of competition driving down margins, while no one is allowed to compete with Apple for iOS customers.

Is Treo not sold in Denmark? It's very popular in Sweden, but I'm guessing not as popular as ibuprofen or paracetamol.

I think nowadays it's much less common for games to run at a different resolution than you've already set your display to.

I would guess the opposite? 4k monitors are fairly cheap while GFX cards which can run games at that resolution with a decent FPS are expensive. Maybe hardware has gotten cheaper or way more performant in the last years though.

So, what are the solutions? How do we make it better?

One of the interesting solutions I have heard: Board-level representation of workers. Currently all board members represent shareholders, and unsurprisingly the company is willing to sacrifice workers to satisfy shareholders. Make it so a third, or half the board has to be elected by workers.
