You’re right, they COULD letterbox Nolan’s movie. They won’t.

Nolan filmed in IMAX. It could just be reduced in size, as you suggested by letterboxing, for standard screens. But they won’t. They don’t want you experiencing the full size movie on a standard screen. They want you to go to IMAX because it costs more.

It’s not about the experience. It’s about money.

It’s no different than car manufacturers of the 1980s selling a base model vehicle with hand crank windows. They could have used the same assembly line to cheaply install machine powered windows for every vehicle of that model, but they intentionally did things to push customers towards more expensive models.

The movie is essentially a total rewrite that uses nothing more than the poem's title and character names. Few other details, motives, lessons, or tensions were retained. It should have been called The Odyssey: A Parody.

It is worth mentioning that the original poem was never intended as a strict historical account. One can retell history through a few different lenses: from the perspective of a neutral investigator, from a cultural perspective, or through the literature inspired by that history. The Odyssey was a mythic epic in that third style.

Homer's original poem was written down after many generations of oral tradition in Greek culture around 3,000 years ago. That it survived is a testament to the cultural value of the details, motives, lessons, and tensions embedded within The Odyssey. None of those values made it into the movie.

The issue is not simply the (laughable) liberties taken with casting or the historical inaccuracies. The movie deviated so far from Homer’s vision of a heroic, faithful, and tragic King of Ithaca that calling it The Odyssey is fundamentally dishonest.

Homer’s Odysseus feared and fought gods and mythological creatures while longing for home (nostos, the word where "nostalgia" is rooted). He was confident and clever (metis) and didn’t waste words.

By contrast, Nolan’s Odysseus is a war-haunted loser whose deep trauma and guilt manifest as a brooding, obsessive narcissism focused on securing his throne, people, and his woman.

This movie may indeed be a hit at the theaters, but it is not The Odyssey. It is a parody.

Apple Developers could have developed the skills and expertise to create their own products. App development tools and coding is within the skill set of a smart 10 year old child. “Apple Developer” is a job title for those at entry level. If any want to grow up, there’s a whole world of opportunities for them that don’t require permission from Apple, including development for government, academia, and crowdsourced machines.

I can support each statement:

A significant number of cybercrime today is committed by people from the former Soviet Bloc.

A significant number of intellectual property theft is committed by people from East Asia.

A significant number of rape in Europe is committed by people from Southeast Asia.

A significant number of managers here, with roots in India, only hire people with roots in India.

A significant number of forcibly retracted academic papers are by Asians, even in journals with major ownership stakes by the Chinese government. In contrast, a significant number of voluntarily retracted academic papers are by Westerners.

A significant number of Medicare and Medicaid fraud convictions in the past twenty years have been of people from the former Soviet Bloc and Asia.

A significant number of scams defrauding US victims remotely and in person, in the past decade, have been committed by crime rings out of West Africa, Western Europe, and Eastern Europe.

That’s not racist. It is unfortunate reality.

If you blindly hire employees without regard to their cultural background, which includes ethnic origin and national identities, even religious beliefs, you are doing a disservice to your organization and your hires.

These former Apple employees were set up to fail by multiple layers of management that did nothing to curb theft, instill loyalty, and train these people that Asian beliefs about intellectual property are considered disloyalty here.

Saying the article was AI assisted is also wrong. Current consumer models can read a vehicle user manual in moments and indicate probable writing errors. This article had a few stylistic errors (or choices) that were irrelevant, except to prove the author is human. If he/she had used AI even in an assistive manner, knowing the nitpicking behavior of the intended audience, it would have had none.

Also, the author’s other public writings have similar errors/choices in style. When “consumer AI” writes or rewrites, it’s impossible for it to mimic one’s writing style so similarly. Literally impossible, because it can’t disregard everything else that it “knows” (voluminous training, guardrails, interface design, social boundaries) for it to 1. Disregard all that training after processing the user’s prompt 2. output a complete article in the user’s style 3. Turn back on its knowledge 4. then continue to function. That’s just not how consumer products work.

You could get it in any state, if you are not expecting anyone else to pay for it. All his panel did was not recommend it be given universally, which you are free to ignore. They didn’t ban it.

The only effect of the panel’s recommendations is to guide insurance reimbursement. The recommendations give insurers the leeway to insist that young, healthy people get a checkup before a vaccine is covered.
