I'm doing my OU Masters in Maths now, in my 40s. It is definitely hard, but I'm enjoying it. Personally I struggle to learning things thoroughly unless I'm working in the subject, or I have exams to do. My own learning workflow is to flip through a chapter to get an overview, then read/re-read it thoroughly, then go through the exercises on the chapters quickly looking at the answers. Read the chapter again, then try doing the exercises without help. I've found YouTube pretty good for getting the intuition behind some ideas.

Be careful with the direction of causality here. It may be that giving up his hobbies hastened his dementia, OTOH it could easily be that the onset of his dementia led to him giving up his hobbies.

He links to a Woodford Investment analysis that states that Brexit might not be that bad for the UK (the report is from Feb 2016). This goes against every other analyst report that I've read, and the optimism seems to be based on a perception that doing trade deals with other countries is easy. My guess is that the author is a Brexit supporter looking to justify their position. "Oh, I voted with all the old people? They are all actually really wise".

I'm @hitechnomad on twitter. I'll tweet once it's on github. The system I'm open sourcing is my own system for trading on my Interactive Brokers account. It should be able to handle any FIX-based exchange/brokerages. Currently finishing a contract at a bank, and I can't trade on my personal account while I am doing this contract, which is why I am waiting until Feb to post it.

Agreed. You could easily argue that in an agrarian society children are an economic benefit (because your wealth is based on working the land), whereas in an urban society having children is an economic burden.

Me too! I was trying to get a router working, and was pinging slashdot to find out if I was routing to the net. No response from slashdot - hmmmm, must have a network problem at my end. A bit later and I realised the net was up, but slashdot was down. It took me another few hours to realise that the reason slashdot was overwhelmed was because a major world-changing event was happening!

But what I think is interesting about this story is the effects of a shrinking middle class on a society. Could this be a glimpse into what could happen in Western society if unemployment and the gap between rich and poor continues to grow? Do you think that the number of people perceiving this gap as uncrossable and thus giving up on society will increase over time, or is this a short-term phenomenon (or is the whole thing simply a media beat-up)?
