A lot of the initial speculation is that the coup was led by Ilya over AI safety concerns, but that seems unlikely now given how quickly he switched sides.

If the above is real then it kind of changes things.
Interesting. Also what a clusterfuck.
At this point this whole thing looks more like
tech billionaires and mammoth corporation use the full weight of social media to exert control over a non-profit organization, and also telling us what to think about the event without having enough info.
The framing in these articles is insane.
You get my point. With all due respect to Sam's technical abilities, if I'd have to choose one to make AI/AGI I'd clearly go with Ilya. The fact that Sam goes to Microsoft doesn't mean all OpenAI is moves to Microsoft. That is the point I'm trying to make
I was not talking about the success but the core tech those employees are working with. That's what really matters isn't it?
This article is that Obama meme awarding a medal to himself. Also I don't get it, OpenAI's product was technically made by Ilya who's still at OpenAI.
For me the real danger of AGI (even aligned), fast forward in some future where robotics are similarly advanced to create full human motion replacement, is that it will dilute if not completely replace human work, ANY kind. And the real danger doesn't come from AGI itself, comes from the psychopaths having control of it.
Non-profit org man. We still don't know what happened and their actions might align to their mission. Weird how quite a few people with your narrative mistake it for a for-profit company.
I don't get it, how is OpenAI "dead"? Are you going to stop using ChatGPT or?
He may have no choice but to try to play this card at this point? The stakes are pretty high I suppose. You don't just give up such level of potential control over this tech.
Trading privacy for safety.
Yeah clearly, at least I have no clue what really happened and don't feel like I have enough info to put anything together at this point.
The amount of money and power their products might offer makes it pretty desirable. Theoretically there should be no limit to the amount and type of shenanigans that are possible in this particular situation.
And it might not exist next week if the board doesn't resign.
Huh? Can't they just hire new people instead? They are a non profit org after all.
Scientists are easily blindsided by psychos dealing with enormous amounts of money and power. They also happen to suck at politics.
Captcha in 2023
with a non-profit vestigial organ that will now be excised.
If this happens I'm not trusting any other non-profit org ever again.
But do they build for free? Or do they build for money, and especially for the perspective of even more money?
But employees are motivated by money and the perspective of more. That kinda casts doubt on the whole angle really. At least in my book.
You don't actually think all these articles are "organic sentiment" do you? Biggest money always wins this kind of game. And the circle of people who really know what went down is pretty small atm. I'll wait for more info before jumping on bandwagons
Comparing a non-profit org to Rome? That's quite the stretch. "Ilya might have just saved this timeline" is more plausible than this article
They did show a thin film sample in their paper, where they show the superconductivity measurement setup. They even mention it is a thin film sample of the material. looks transparent on the probing station. That is what they measured for superconductivity, not the rock/ingot form. That seems to be only a sort of magnetic demo for the material, nothing more. But the superconductive applications material seems to be thin film tech, as they state in their original paper.
It's something that literally has to be grown from the bottom-up, atom by atom --- in bulk, that's essentially a UFO-tier tech. isn't that how your CPU is made?
not sure why everyone completely overlooks the fact that the superconductivity measurement from their paper is made on a thin film sample which nobody replicated as there's no manufacturing details for that version of the material. whoever (from the original team) said that the ingot itself is to be tested for superconductivity?
clearly depends on needed resolution and our ability to recreate the material structure. you don't have to understand much about wood to build a chair.
What is Tesla using on their cars?
I also believe the gain is in productivity more than needing less people. They will fire as much as possible, but the largest gains seem to me to be in productivity.
And exactly like this some future brain implant thing will also put another layer of pressure. People will get it as it'll give them an edge on certain fronts.
We sure as hell avoid having a clear definition for what "consciousness" is. Nothing is good enough. Somehow there always seems to be something special in us that is impossible to replicate. Even with no evidence of it. What we perceive as consciousness MUST be replicable or else we're living in magicland and nobody can replicate that magic.
Isn't that why people actually refuse to accept the possibility of no free will? I always got that impression.
