Like you said it has firmware which is flashable. Secure enclaves are never 100% secure but if only, for example, Apple can upload to them, it dramatically reduces some random open source project being git pulled. Apple may still pull open source but they would be on the hook to avoid this.
Open sources days of declaring “use at your risk” have become a liability in this hyper networked society. It’s now becoming part of the problem it was imagined up to solve.
The past also screwed up a lot. At best their effort is a wash, still leaving little reason to deify them through intentional conservation of their legacy.

On the upside, along with stem degrees, I spent my youth in farmland slaughtering and growing my own food, fixing heavy machinery. IMO one of the elders biggest mistakes is helping so many avoid the real work required to survive. I’m no Dick Proennekke, but neither are all the office workers who can’t even bake a potato let alone grow one (first hand experience with that; that was a very short romantic relationship).
Makes this economy that much harder to adjust and will probably just collapse given the lack of elasticity due to so many with so narrow a skill set.
Adam Smith is claimed to have written (paraphrasing) extreme division of labor will lead to humans as dumb as the lowest animal. I think this economic experiment has proven his 200 year old quote.

I haven’t worked in hardware design since the era of Nortel, and it was way different back then but the general physics are the same; if, else, while, and math operations in the hardware are not hard.
In fact your hardware is a general while loop; while has power, iterate around refreshing these memory states with these computed values, even in the absence of user input (which at the root is turning it on).
Programmers have grown accustomed to being necessary to running ignorant business machines but that’s never been a real requirement. Just a socialized one. And such memes are dying off.
Yeah these types of security issues will be used by politicians to force hardware makers to lockdown hardware, embed software in chips.
The go fast startups habit of “import the world to make my company products” is a huge security issue IT workers ignore.
The only solution politics and big tech will chase is obsolete said job market by pulling more of the stack into locked down hardware, with updates only allowed to come from the gadget vendor.
Sorry failed to call out I wasn’t delineating along typical party lines. Politicians, judges, gen pop; those empowered by past political and socioeconomic choices they ram down the futures throat are conservative quacks, full stop.

Perhaps it’s all just dopamine and oxytocin addiction due to intentional propagation of conservative socio economic and political memes of the past, enjoyment, Schadenfreude, of worker deference?
As a radical truth seeker, I’m not content to accept such lazy and old social memes (it’s not 2006 anymore) as sacrosanct truth. Thats pseudoscience, living in a biological state the past we know is essential. It smells of religious conviction, banal stubbornness, laziness, and entitlement.
Will reality unzip if “this isn't the way”?
Goodhart’s law: Is “they enjoy it” a good enough measure to burn up resources on startup role-play? Is startup culture and hand wavy billionaires based upon conservation of dated (it’s not 1900s anymore) political rhetoric good enough?
As a Xennial it’s been interesting watching Boomers and GenX lose their energy for the future and replace it with demands of fealty to their past via social media.
Us radical truth seekers are not so content conserving past propaganda and success. “Commit it [conservation of past society] then to the flames…”
The best part is it did it in a way that it’s still accessible to basic needs
Gimp on the other hand… only for power users. I recently tried using it for some quick edits (apt install gimp popped into my head first) What a nightmare.
Linux apps of old were the bare engine with no seat belts and cup holders, and often no steering wheel. Windows apps back in the day were often way better about easing users in.
