It's disappointing that Autodesk seems to have eaten everything, but does WebGL necessarily help to standardise any sort of 3D asset format?

The (few, simple) WebGL examples I've looked at seem to use JSON to transport the assets from the server to the browser, but the particular representation used is apparently arbitrary.

I admit I'm thinking by analogy, I don't see OpenGL itself having helped standardise asset formats, so I'm wondering if WebGL is different here.

I'm curious as to how were they able to poach. Money, equity, working conditions, all of these, none of these...?

Working conditions in some of the big companies in the real games industry sound pretty bad to me, but I am only going on lazy reading of articles like "EA spouse", I have no experience in the industry itself. I think I'd be pretty outraged to be on a Farmville death march, for sure.

The Therac 25 medical radiation accidents are an illustration of this point. The 25 had low-quality software running a robot with too few hardware safeties built in, and caused injuries and deaths. Previous Therac models had similarly defective software as the 25, but killed nobody due to having hardware safety features independent from software.
