Having recently been introduced to the lisp world (~1 year) it has been a revelation to me. It really changed the way I see programming and my expectations of it.
I do not understand how it has not taken over the world.
Background: I have ~15 years of experience in programming. In my spare time I learn new languages.
I must have missed the security warning when Apple phones communicated back home when syncing contacts in iCloud.
by fixing the bug you tell everybody what/where the bug is and if anybody has a copy of someone else encrypted disk (think external backup, amazon etc..) they can decrypt it.
In software development we call it abstraction. Privacy is for real people.

You are misunderstanding the reason people use these services. They use it to stay anonymous because many people use it and it is harder to distinguish what traffic belongs to what user.
If you setup your own vpn server, encrypted or not, it defeats that purpose because one could just listen on the other end.

Google is not "any" company. In light of recent allegations, they collect far too much data for purposes that we don't know. Hence "Define specified and explicit purposes;". Every user is entitled to know what data a company is storing on them.
Remember that CNIL protects user interests.
Being a programmer doesn't mean living with the latest gadget.
I don't really know why do you say it has not really worked. Has anybody been killed ? There is a reason they call it dead man's switch.

Talking about privacy. Why use services like Scribd ? A simple link to the pdf file hosted somewhere else would have suffice. I then can do my searches locally without them tracking exactly what I do (who views what, who searches what). SASS (Service as Software Substitute) is evil...
I won't sign up until they make sure there will be Internet... with Earth.
What is the point of creating such network if it is for the benefit of just a few ? If 1% of the population can have free speech, but the rest of them don't, nothing will change...
