Been developing mobile apps for over 15 years. This is by far the best stack for developing mobile apps. Speed, total control, native UI's. Love it.

Capt Tom Fargo was better. As you learn from that YouTube video, he went on to run 7th Fleet as an Admiral. The stuff we did while he was CO was important in the Cold War for the security of the US.

yes, I read the book before I got to the boat when I was at nuclear reactor prototype training in Idaho. Read it on the long bus rides back and forth to the site. Yes, it was good and pretty operationally accurate. All the sub lingo etc, is accurate. Some of the actors on the bridge of the Dallas were active duty sub sailors at the time.

Great read on how ILM made the shots. As a crew member on the USS Salt Lake City (SSN-716), we took many of the cast and crew out to sea for 24 hours before they made the movie to get a feel for what sub-life was like before they made the movie. All the cast and crew were great, and I think it made the movie better.

It's good to see all the Navy nukes comments on this article. MM1/SS, one tour on an SSN, and one on an SSBN!

Having spent 10 years as a Navy Nuclear Propulsion Operator on two different submarines operating the reactor plant, I can tell you I am not surprised by incidents like these. In order of importance: 1) Lack of sleep (it wasn't unusual to operate on no sleep over a 36-48 hour period) 2) Poor or insufficient training. Just because you are "trained or qualified" doesn't mean you know how to operate. 3) Poor or missing procedures (let's call it UI/UX for today's lingo). Many procedures were vague, and drawings were hard to understand. The Navy has a feedback system for this, but it often takes months/years to resolve.

Having said all that, the issues pointed out in the comments and the article, including my comments, have existed for decades in the Navy. At some point, it comes down to the command's leadership and superiors to ensure these issues don't happen. A poorly designed checkbox is the last thing that caused this issue.

Having been developing iOS apps since 2009, hard to believe 15 years, this is one of the finest writeups from a developer I've seen. Congrats on your hard work and the decisions you made developing your app. You made some great decisions, i.e., sticking to native development, no 3rd party dependencies, and sticking with Obj-C.

I made the move to Swift when it came out. However, there are many times I miss Obj-C and many of the advantages you mentioned. I often wonder what Obj-C would look like today if Apple had put the time and effort into it instead of Swift.

I was not aware of your app. I just downloaded it on my Mac and iPhone. It is really nice! I like the little things you have done, like the hints on the menu bars for using the Option key, and the hint disappearing when you do. I am going to continue to use it.

Quickbooks is currently a necessary evil for me. I have to use it, because that is what my bookkeepers and accountants use.

If you want to change either your bookkeeper or your accountant, your new bookkeeper and accountant know how to use it.

Spent 3.5 years on a LA Class Fast Attack sub and 3 years on a Ohio Class Ballistic Missile sub (aka boomer) as Nuke MM & ELT. 10 years total in the Navy. Article put a smile on my face. Not a bad job for being written by a “Sonar Girl”. :-)

The US Navy builds new nuclear reactors every year. It takes 5+ years to build commercial plants because of government bureaucrats, endless regulations and every new nuke plant is a new, non-standard design.

Best line in the whole thread, "No, your cross-platform app is not indistinguishable from native, or good. It is probably good enough, here’s a participation ribbon." Nice!!!
