I'm a usual pacer when on the phone so I'm not sure if that's instinct or habit but it certainly helps.

Scheduling is also not mentioned surprisingly, but leaving 5-15m buffer gaps between back to back meetings I run is huge. When I dont do that I pay for it.

I am in this boat. Though my phone usage is still there, I'm spending more time on other apps to get the same brain-break, entertainment, or distraction. Reading articles here or following other news sources straight from their sites instead of having a handy subreddit that aggregates them all (example - following Formula1 news).

The point about planned obsolescence is tough to work around. Until we start designing physical devices to make it for the long haul, this problem just wont go away.

Yea they completely brushed over the likes of VRBO and other competitors.

I think the biggest similarity is consumer mindshare and the art of turning your brand into a verb.

Even if I'm ordering a Lyft, in conversation I'll say I'm "ubering".

Likewise when booking an "AirBnB", I'll browse all sorts of alternative sites just to spot check locations/prices/etc.

The real limit to the market is how many players are in the game.

Remember when Austin Texas had a fingerprinting law that prevented Uber/Lyft from operating inside the city? There were a million and one alternative services, but generally both drivers and riders would recommend and use one or two based on personal experience/word of mouth recommendations. (ie- Ride with a driver that provides a good experience and who talks about which ones he or she uses and likes, then you will tend towards those apps rather than the smattering of others)

In markets like these where both the buyer and seller are using a 3rd party to accomplish a secured transaction, there seems to be only room for a few. This generally is down to mindshare of both the buyers and sellers, which comes down to marketing and getting your name out there.

Uber and AirBnB are in the same boat. They have the market's mindshare and brand name recognition... and thats about it.

After reading about Pai, it seems like he was hand selected to be the figure head with which the ISPs would finally take down Net Neutrality.

This whole situation sucks, and no matter how much noise we make and activism we take part in, if Pai has the legal footing to ruin the internet, he will.

So basically, Uber is LESS willing to risk a lawsuit for firing bad/sexist/asshat employees and MORE willing to risk a lawsuit from employees who bear the brunt of the abuse.

Oh yea thats right. As other have discussed, its because Uber is a juggernaut corp who will out-spend the legal competition anyway, so Uber doesn't care.

I appreciate your defense that "it isn't everyone" and "I am an Uber engineer and I stand up for women/gays/minorities", but I'm not sure we are getting at the larger picture here.

Its the movers and shakers at the top who need to start setting the right example instead of protecting their golf buddy who is making 6 figures. You have done your part, but this needs to go all they way up to the top.

You'd think they would at the very least care about the bad press in terms of quarterly/yearly earnings and the potential loss of customers/drivers because of the PR fallout.

Same can be said for sports communities, especially the racing subreddits :)

I use mine without anything playing about 70% of the time I have them on.

They can block out ambient/office noise pretty well and can help concentration.

Prolonged exposure to unhealthy volume levels makes you go deaf.

Most of the time I'm not actually listening to anything, I just have my cans on as a sound buffer, and they're ready when/if I play something with audio.

Before my first comment, I hadn't seen this comment.

I am your age, you make more than me, and I came from much less dire straights...

In a way, many people could even envy your experiences for the drive it gives you. I have toxic family members and I can tell you from experience that a drug addict in the family is an extra anchor to a sinking boat.

I almost have a guilt that I grew up with any amount of money at all and would be very willing to do anything for others, thinking I owed it to them.

Do you have a psychologist? Maybe you could spend some of those six figures to clear the air with someone about all of this instead of telling people they are making asses out of themselves.

I understand you're quite pressured socially to 'fit in' with all the other people that make the same money you do... In fact social pressures to look as if you are well off is a big issue in our time.

What I find interesting is that your upbringing is really that unmentionable. In my opinion, your experiences give you a drive few could ever hone. Your rags to riches story may indeed garner you more true friends than you know. Sharing your personal story is inspiring to many and can help others deal with their own problems.

Don't be ashamed of where you come from. Be proud that you have risen above. You should see yourself as an example that it CAN be done, and that despite all of your hardships, here you are, working for one of the big guys, able to share your experiences for others to learn.

Back to the point though, if you want to make something free forever, buy it outright one time and its yours for the keeping... Subscription services like buying a car then going to TitleMax and giving them the title, wait for them to take your car away when you can't pay.

I follow certain specific subject matter with it. My particular interests include (but are not limited to r/formula1, r/cars, r/guns, r/karting, and any game subreddit I may be interested in...

Everything else is short-term, quick-look entertainment (r/gifs, r/funny, r/pics, r/mildlyinteresting, etc).

Ask him what he wanted to do as a kid. Chances are he can afford to experience a bit of that now, and maybe share that with his family.
