The US taxes citizens on world wide income, no matter where they are resident, so they are probably the worst choice among the first world nations for the super rich. There are people, like Eduardo Saverin, who give up their US citizenship to avoid US taxes.

The UK is a haven for a lot of these people, as it has a very attractive non-domiciled rule (live in the UK, only get taxed on UK income or income which you bring into the UK - income which stays out of country is effectively untaxed).

Or, perhaps a jurisdiction like Hong Kong with no capital gains tax might make sense.

C++ (Using something like emscripten for the web)

Although, i'd pick java over C++ unless i'm doing some very performance critical

"Google worked out a deal with “full service” broker to give us free accounts"

That is actually really interesting. How much did this broker have to pay to get this box full of highly lucrative leads - access to a large set of newly wealthy individuals, many of which don't have experience with managing large amounts of money. A bunch of people who may be experts of technology, but probably are not experts on finance.

It seems like inviting the fox into the hen house, and telling the hens what it deal it was

This is really the death of the mid-market mall, which are being replaced with 2 extremes - the outlet mall and the high end mall.

In warm climates, malls become outdoor is the trend, but that certainly isn't the case for cities with harsher winters.

Passports for sale 12 years ago

You can already get a visa-for-money from most major first world countries, and after a few years, it is easy enough to make the jump towards citizenship. Is it really that big of a jump to get rid of the time component?

For example:

USA

EB5 investor visa: $1,000,000 or $500,000 depending on the area you 'invest' in. One of the easiest ways to get a green card, and from there, citizenship

UK

Tier 1 investor visa: £1,000,000 in 'investment', which can just be the purchase of government bonds. Apply for indefinate leave to remain (green card equivilant) after 4 years. If you invested £5 million, you only need 3 years. If you invested £10 million, it is down to 2 years. The UK non-domicile tax status can also be very very generous to wealthy expats (unless they are American and thus are taxed on world wide income regardless).

Canada

Canada used to have such a program (Immigrant Investor visa for $800,000 CAD for people with net worths of at least $!.6 million), but that was terminated recently. I believe the Quebec version is still open though

I'm really impressed, I was set on getting an apple watch until now, but this may change my mind - great form factor and style, has the sensors I'm looking for, and cross platform. I'm eagerly waiting a review.

Will having servers physically located in Germany really satisfy the privacy concern of German clients given that Amazon is still an American company subject to american laws?

Dropbox.com hacked? 12 years ago

I wonder how many people are foolish enough to store their bitcoin wallets on dropbox, and if the hacker has already preemptively removed the funds from those wallets.

Actions speak louder than words, and I don't see how requiring logins to view answers results in a better user experience and community.

I would guess that since it is socially uncouth to say their motivation for the site is to try to make a lot of money, they instead state a more noble sounding mission whenever asked about motivations.

I'm pretty curious as to your statement 'Register jobs in Postgres, use RabbitMQ as the trigger mechanism. But this puts a burden on the processor, which now has to use two APIs.'

Does that mean you know of a way to do it with just a DB and without a MQ?

If you store the jobs in the database and dont have a parallel MQ system, exactly what triggers the job to be run?

For example, a job might be to process a batch of pictures. To create the job, you would insert a row into the database. But when you insert the row, how would another machine know to wake up and start processing it? Is that other machine just polling? If so, how do you ensure two machines on the cluster dont pick up the same job?

I'm not sure how that helps.

If you are in Silicon Valley (or NYC), then yes, you can fund raise easily and at high valuations, but you are stuck paying Silicon Valley wages.

If you are in the US, but outside Silicon Valley (or NYC), then you cannot raise nearly as easily as in Silicon Valley. So while you are not paying Silicon Valley wages and rental prices, your valuations are lower as well.

The last option is to have headquarters in Silicon Valley and have all your developers be remote - but that option seems frowned upon as seems awfully close to the outsourcing development.

Good idea, the autocomplete dialog is just too slow, which makes for an awful first impression.

I should be able to just type 'lhr' and enter

Instead, i need to

- type 'lhr'

- wait a painful second for the autocomplete dialog to load

- click on 'lhr' from the dropdown list

- click 'go'

Employee Equity 12 years ago

Private company valuations of companies based in VC are far than companies outside the valley, even with the same revenue/profit/growth potential.

It sucks and doesn't make economic sense, but that is what I observe

JDK 8 Release Notes 12 years ago

It doesnt recommends using time and date without time zone, it recommends using the right class for the right job. And sometimes the right class doesnt include a timezone

Suppose you have a webpage asking users for their birth date. What data type do you store that value in? Hint: You aren't going to prompt the user for the time zone they were born in.

So is Google a startup then? They are definately trying new models and markets - Glass, self driving cars, robots, etc.

How would AirBnB be any more of a startup than Google?

So, he got FU money. In exchange, he lost the team culture of the business he founded. Not a bad exchange, in my mind - not something to complain about.

Compare that to his employees, who likely did not get FU money, and still lost the team culture of the startup.

Because it is a double standard. There are thousands of sites which get blacklisted by Google. I'm sure all of them fix their errors really quickly once they realize they are on the black list. And none of them get back on Google nearly as quickly as rap genius did.

If Google applied these rules consistently with all websites, I would have no problem with it, but they don't. This breaks the myth that Silicon Valley is a meritocracy - as it shows that the connections you have are as important as raw merit, if not more

Does anyone know of any note apps which support Linux, iOS, Windows, and OS X. Starts up fast. For example, vi starts up fast. Works offline and online. Always syncs without a manual step.

I don't care about pictures, or audio, or OCR, etc. I just want the basics to work and work perfectly.

This really shows that even in Silicon Valley, your success is driven as much by the connections you have and the people you know, rather than pure talent and merit.

Doesn't Linux count as a major platform? I don't understand that with all the funding they have that they can't hire a developer work on a linux app.

And see Dropbox as an example of something which supports every major platform WITHOUT losing data losing bugs.

Why are you surprised they are reimbursing overdraft fees? That is the bare minimum that I would expect from any company which made this mistake
