I do not want to live in a world where random drones/cameras control my every move, and if your response to that is "I don't understand the problem" then we cannot live in the same society. It has been proven for thousands of years now that more laws do not fix society, and especially the problems we have now. Usually the laws increase in size and absurdity proportionally to how close said society is to its fall. Yet people never learn, and we just add one more line to the list.

I think you are confusing what a private citizen is. Focus on the word 'private'. Ursula should know NOTHING about me. I should know everything about Ursula, she lives on MY dime.

I think this should go one step further. If you don't praise the magnificence of your local EU politicians then your car's breaks will stop working and an electric shot will be administered to everyone presently in the car. That will satisfy EU-rocrats.

I agree with you somewhat, and I like what is described in the article. But I also feel like we are diluting the meaning of the word to make things sound better. Lossy/Lossless is inherently binary, and it carries a specific meaning. It would not detract from the work at all if it was described differently.

Could this be some sort of """legalized""" corruption? Because the profits Google makes by very consciously and very deliberately doing what it is doing amount to many billions of dollars. And they are obviously not going to stop, while on the meantime we get one of these articles almost every year.

So then the EU signals how "tough" they are... Google pays for the cost of doing business in the EU... little people like us think that "we are fighting the big bad corporation", and all is good for one more year.

From what I understand the 'current' leadership in Israel-even with how they behave-they are still the most left of all possible options. The ones that could come after it are even more extreme.

Even the "wouldn't dare to verbalize" is weird to me! I thought we had governments to help with defense, and the budget, but now we are at the point were some guy somewhere is dictating what I can and can't say, what I can and can't eat. Odd how we ended up like this.

I like how we quickly moved past the fact that the government wants to know who we are, what we visit, what we say, what we buy, and has explicitly said that they want to control what we buy, where we go, and what we are allowed to say. But we are focused on what specific mega-corporation those systems will use to function.

I agree of course, Europe should not be using US services for critical infrastructure. But more importantly I think that we are private citizens. The government should know as least as possible about us. We on the other hand should know every single move, decision, and discussion they have while they sit on the chairs we paid for.

What is weird in all of this is why is the US obsessed with israel so much exactly! Was it a random choice; did they had a random number generator pick it? Why are they not going to such lengths for other random countries in the opposite side of the world for example? And if an official's number one priority is not the people that pay him and have granted him his power, should he be in that position?

You participate and feel that you belong to a society in the same way you would do for a family. The members have to be your own. This has been empirically shown to be true in every single case. If I force my way in your house and you are legally obligated to consider me part of your family, you might for a while, but your level of participation and your willingness for it will drop by a lot. Pretending it isn't so will not help anyone, it will make things harder. Japan, to their credit, does not pretend.

I don't think it's project specific per se. It's more the way Github has been behaving lately (it's not by accident that so many big projects are leaving), and the way the US has been behaving.

I agree. But also back then you could buy a house and support a family with one salary as a trash truck driver. Today we spend years investing in masters and PhD-s to still live with roommates and consider buying food a luxury. Especially after the COVID hikes.

Sure, well for me it isn't. It has been awful for even toy tasks that opencode's free plan did without an issue. The general sentiment about it is that it is really bad. I wish I knew before paying.

The armies of people desperate to defend mistral, scouring the internet for any of the hundreds of negative posts made about it daily is pathetic. There's a reason it needs 'fanboys' and 'defenders'... it sucks. Id have loved to use a European alternative, but Europeans need to get serious and actually offer an alternative that has value other than "it's trash, but it has a Made in Europe badge".

After paying for Mistral and using it for a while I genuinely hated it. It's a productivity black hole and can't realistically compete with anyone. I chose it only because it was European, but no. I'd rather let my one year subscription go to waste than use anything 'Mistral'.
