I have always assumed many programmers are terrible at sports in general so they turn programming into this weird sport of who can be the Cristiano Ronaldo of programming.

I just don't see how we get rid of the office without replacing the way the people higher up feel more important at an office.

Everyone is ultimately too equal on zoom and the people higher up are the ones deciding this.

Hence, we need to get back in the office for "collaboration". Of course no one really believes this.

At this point though we need to have entire new branch of the military. Otherwise, I just don't see how we are taking this serious enough.

It is just incredible how we are always fighting the last war. From 9/11, instead of learning we need to constantly stay on top of a shifting battlefield we learned to fight Islamic terrorism. Not good.

I think you should just view it like a podcast or music video. You have full control over the presentation. I wouldn't doubt there is a huge bias in interviews towards the more aesthetically pleasing video.

The people I know in this situation are the hardest working people I have ever met and it is insulting to them to say such things.

This is the real rub to me.

It would be one thing if you rip off all my data but I am constantly seeing ads for cool things I would never have found otherwise and can't wait to buy. Instead the ads are always shit that I never even consider.

If things were not tailored I would probably randomly run across products that are just outside my current taste but at least spark some interest.

What if I need to get my car repaired? You are telling me the office can't have an on site mechanic? Oil change while I work would be a nice perk. Email me when it is done.

I have been married twice. My first wife was practically my "soul mate", we had the same taste in everything. We were best buds, everything was perfect besides our sex life sucked. It always led to conflict and problems.

My wife now we have almost nothing in common when it comes to taste, art, music, hobbies, nothing. We have an amazing sex life though. I couldn't be happier.

That is not how it works in the movies. I am supposed to meet my first wife and live happily ever after. It is the difference between real life and fiction.

I just can't disagree more. If you are a productive worker and very social the office is a huge negative. Because I am social everyone always wants to talk to me in the office. All remote has really done is given me an office with a locked door that I now control who and when I can be disrupted and distracted.

If you are a slacker at home I am sure you slacked in the office as well.

To me it all depends if we are talking from a middle management perspective or not. The company is better off but the redundancy of middle management is on full display right now.

There will be huge opportunity though for companies that get leaner middle management wise and poach high performing remote talent across the country. This to me seems very obvious.

Not to mention, it is not like you are going to have the luxury as a company of cutting remote cost post COVID. Remote cost is sunk cost for the remainder of my working life.

I assume the biggest factor right now with how the company spins the narrative with remote work has to do with what things look like with the timing and length of the office lease.

At some point in the future though, the cost of the office will become a competitive disadvantage.

I would think the fact high performers work better remote though is what will be a competitive advantage for a 100% remote company at some point in the future.

I am way more productive remote and it isn't even close. While I do like the social aspect of the office, it is such overkill.

To me post-COVID, the whole country is open for business. I want to join a company that values high productive remote workers and sees the massive opportunity this is going to create.
