I'm a big fan of Wikilekas, but I see several things wrong with this approach.

First, it's the way they ask for donations. They close the website and it's almost like "If you want Wikileaks, you have to pay". I don't think this helps their cause in any way. I remember seeing a banner while the website was still live, but that didn't last long.

Also, I don't think they reached a point where then can't hold the website online. It's not like it's new.

Like someone else said, they don't tell what their expenses are, nor how much money they need.

On the technical side, I don't see the need for having MediaWiki running. It's not the most lightweight application, and since most of the publications are done by the team behind the project, maybe having an approach like http://cryptome.org/ would make it less CPU hungry and would not depend on so many resources.

I'm relativity young to give up on my dream job just yet, but I'm having some serious doubts I'll ever get it.

That being said, if it's your "dream job", and they can provide you with some safety, I say go for it. Use your free time to work on your own business.

If you ever get to a point where keeping the two is too much work, that will be a good sign, and you can choose between the two.

I usually have a few files that I don't want on the server, or vice versa. The option --exclude-from=ignore-files is useful to maintain a list of files not be synced.

The file ignore-files would contain the keywords or files to ignore, one per line.

I'm a new user to this website, but I've notice the level of integrity and consistency on the comments. It's actually the reason that made me select this "community" and not others like Digg/Slashdot/whatever.

The users are the strong point of HN, and losing that would not be good at all.

I say +1 for invitation based system. Also, users could have a more active role on moderation. Just not sure how, exactly.
