First, a lot of English-speaking countries place lower importance on veggies.

Which ones? In the US, we are told to eat our veggies because they are good for you. The problem in the US is that something forced women into the workplace and families are resorting to easy processed meals like microwave dinners, fast food, etc.

What supernatural being descended on earth and gave governments the supreme right to own the path from earth into space.

'Listen. Strange supernatural beings descending on earth is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses...'

OK, so, if you could launch from a ship in the middle of the ocean you would be free to launch as you wish?

Couldn't that possibly be mistaken by countries around the world as an icbm launch. Given that danger, I'm pretty sure no private company would be allowed to launch rockets without government approval. But I'm just guessing.

Because of microsoft office ( particularly excel ). It's just as simple as that. I remember years ago people thought that google's free office/spreadsheet offering was going to be the end of microsoft office/excel. I remember having a good laugh back then. The business world, especially finance, runs on microsoft office. I just don't see it changing anytime soon. It's amazing how entrenched it is.

It takes billions and billions of dollars

Apple and Microsoft are trillion dollar companies ( both nearing $3 trillion market caps ). They can afford it. Heck they have the balance sheet to acquire both tsmc and samsung if either were up for sale.

I thought Apple was moving towards being a full-stack company. Where all the hardware and software is developed in-house. If anyone has the resources, it is apple.

And we want all the names of the people who own you. It's always the hysterically pro-israel ( and anti-american ) politicians who behave this way. Funny how she says it will prevent russian, iranian and chinese bots, but no mention of indian or israeli bots. Modern politics is so absurd. An indian american woman who hates america and but loves israel. How do one even begin to make sense of this craziness?

OK, I don't think so.

Doesn't matter what you think. It's a fact. No revolution swept the old guard from power. The system didn't change. I explained this to you.

When the Berlin Wall fell, which direction did the foot vote move?

The wealthier side. You seem to mistake wealth with goodness.

Using your logic, because poor north koreans migrate to china or poor egyptians migrate to saudi arabia, it must mean china and saudi arabia are the good guys. That's the dumbest logic I've seen.

Between the soviet union and the US, the evil side exterminated a continent full of natives and dropped nuclear weapons. I'll let you figure out which side was the evil one. Anyway, thanks for your service killer.

Miami is a 2.5 hour flight direct from almost every major airport on the east coast. It is beautiful year round.

Yes. You just described a wonderful vacation destination. Not a financial capital.

Sorry, but I don't really want my face to hurt when I step outside December through March.

I'd be more worried about hurricanes and flooding than cold manhattan wind.

You just ignored all my points with silly nonsense. Are all the top universities going to migrate south too? Are tens of millions of people going to move to miami as well?

But in the 60s Detroit was the tech capital of America and California was for movie stars, beatniks, and farmers.

By the 60s, northern california was already a tech hub. Stanford university was around for nearly a century by then and initial inventment in silicon valley was already decades old as was the JPL. Also, nyc-metro was the tech capitabl back then. Bell labs was located right outside of nyc for a reason.

Mr Griffin should learn about 'geography is destiny' and take a look at a map. Manhattan is situated smack in the middle of the population center that is the ny metro area and more broadly the northeast. Not to mention the top universities of the world harvard, yale to princeton, upenn and the dozens of world class universities in between. And the northeast is geographically a lot closer to europe and european financial capitals than miami is.

What has miami to offer? World class college football teams in florida? Is Tim Tebow going to be running 'goldman sachs south'? Will the miami-havana link replace the nyc-london link?

More like scoundrels paid to push an agenda. How do these types of garbage hit the front page so often one wonders.

how would we ever hear about it?

Why wouldn't we? What are we going to do about it? Nothing. It's just like youtube platforms videos discussing how bad social media is for your mental health. Or oil companies funding 'green' tech. Or a newspaper writing about how bad news is for you.

'News is bad for you – and giving up reading it will make you happier'

https://www.theguardian.com/media/2013/apr/12/news-is-bad-ro...

Who cares?

These are all large media companies.

They are all large media companies controlled by the same group of elites.

In a totalitarian system, the elites carse about what you think. In a dystopian system, the elites don't care.

So random house published herman and chomsky? And? What happened since? It's like food industry being paranoid about people finding out about how sausage is made. People find out. People keep on eating sausage. Heck it's free advertising.

At the end of the Cold War, I enlisted in the Navy because it was a good opportunity; there was no ambiguity regarding the bad guys; the military leadership was good; the elected leadership was generally tolerable.

Sounds like you received a healthy dose of cold war propaganda.

I'm no longer able to encourage the youth to follow in my footsteps, as the opposite of the above is generally the case.

You sure about that? Because the same leadership, military and political, are in power as they were at the end of the cold war. Nothing changed in the US after the cold war because we won.

I think you have to come to terms on who the bad guys real were. The soviets weren't the evil empire. The evil empire is the one that beat the soviets. Or maybe the eviler empire beat the evil empire.

It amazes me that reddit has maintained such a terribe search service for so long. It has been consistently and impressively bad. The most basic filtered full-text search would be better. But then again, if google is going to do the job for them, why waste your time and resources on improving search. Maybe if they blocked google, it'll force them to improve reddit search.

* Her name means "renown/glory of father", a really nice name for a daughter! The first part, kleos comes from kluein, "to hear", which in turn derives from the same IE root as the English word loud.

Which is not even an egyptian name, since ancient egyptian is an afro-asiatic language, not an IE language like greek. It's funny seeing africans and middle easterners fighting over who cleopatra belongs to when in actuality, cleopatra was a european woman of greek ancestry. Not african. Not afro-asiatic.

* Cleopatra was depicted as an alien, promiscuous, and immoral woman starting with Romans (perhaps continuing the well-known Medea stereotype), up to perhaps mid-20th century.

Starting with the victorious romans. The romans who lost had different views of cleopatra. It's almost like the victors write the history.

The debate about the color of her skin and her race became heated

It shouldn't have been because there is no question about who cleopatra was. Cleopatra was no more black than elon musk is. She was a ruler of egypt but she was not an egytian ruler. No more than queen elizabeth was an indian ruler of india.

I think language partly to blame for the confusion. There is a difference between an eqyptian queen or egyptian ruler and queen of egypt or ruler of egypt. The latter doesn't necessarly have to be eqyptian.

That it why we spell it as "colour" in English.

No. That was due to french influence. Not to be more phonetic.

Americans removed the "u" from their dialect which makes a needlessly complicated language even more so.

Webster removed it to make it more phonetic. Do you pronounce color the same way as flour? Of course not. Color, harbor, favor, etc is more phonetically accurate than colour, harbour, favour, etc.

The funny thing is that it's mirrored in our law - English law is all about case law and president.

Precedent.

Pushing these companies to return money to their shareholders instead of keeping it in huge war chests used for buying up any potential competitors would be a good first step.

Companies already do that with dividend payouts or share buyouts. Also, the shareholders control these companies. If they wanted the profits returned to then, they would vote for it.

Maybe something along the lines of "any company whose average market cap over the course of a fiscal year exceeds 1% of GDP is automatically broken up".

I prefer over 33% market share. I think every market/industry should have at least 3 players. Any company that goes over 33% market share for X period of time gets broken apart.

Companies that don't want to be split into pieces would need to find ways to reduce their market cap, one of the quickest being sending dividends to shareholders

Not necessarily. There are companies that don't have a profit or cash on hand with huge market caps. Amazon notoriously made no profit for decades. I think enterprise value is what you are looking for.

I assure you I see these colours the same as you do.

I assure you that you do not. Don't want to get too philosophical or biological on you but we all see colors differently. Every single one of us. Even identical twins.

The west bootstrapped modern civilization

Bootstrapped? You mean raped, pillaged, exterminated and polluted.

Other countries dont need to because cleaner technology is available now.

'Available'? You mean poor countries have to pay rich western countries exorbitant prices to use 'clean' technology when they could simply use abundant and cheap coal, oil, etc to develop?

You act like we are trying to give underdeveloped countries free technology. No what developing regions like india, asean, africa, etc should be doing is pumping out coal, nuclear, gas, oil, fossil fuel plants and improving the lives of their people.

Wikipedia says that it rains 39.34 inches annually in Seattle. Is that a lot?

The precipitation in seattle (mist) and the precipitation in nyc ( rain ) are two different animals. For example, pretty much everyone in nyc owns an umbrella. Pretty much nobody in seattle owns an umbrella. Why would that be if it 'rains' more in seattle?

It's probably true that seattle gets more precipitation because it's constantly misty for 6 or 7 months. You can go weeks without seeing the sun in seattle. In nyc, the precipitation is mostly in the form of actual rain and downpours. You can dumped on and the clouds clear. Maybe a system will bring downpours for a couple of days. But it always clears. You rarely get dumped on in seattle and if so, for a short time frame. And the skies never clear. It just remains and annoys you with mist.

Seattle has 156.2 rainy days.

Nope. Not rainy days. Maybe 6 rainy days and 150 misty days.

In the northeast, you can actual weather. In the west coast, it's flimsy weather. I've no other word to describe it. People who experienced both will get what I'm trying to say.

Or you can bake it. That way you can save the tasty juices. It's especially effective for hamburger patties. When you are done cooking, you can dump the juices on the bread and then put your hamburger patty on it. Absolutely delicious.

After years of overcooked dry meat, setting off the smoke alarm, dealing with splatter all over the stove and a lingering smell in the apartment for the entire day, I discovered the magic of baking meat and will never go back to searing and frying meat.

This works just as well for steak. Instead of buying individual cuts of steak, buy a rib roast. Roast it in the oven and cut it into individual steaks afterwards. Cooked steak keeps amazingly well so you can put it in the fridge or freeze it and eat it later. Pan searing or grilling will never get you the tasty crust that roasting can. Try it and never go back to a smoke filled apartment with a screaming smoke alarm.

It seems like Microsoft believes they can settle for something much lower.

They could hire the best lawyers, accountants, lobbyists, etc in the world. Unless someone at microsoft did something criminal, it's likely they could knock a significant portion off the tax bill.

The stock price doesn’t seem to be hurting pre-market at all.

Microsoft's market cap is $2.5 Trillion. The one-time tax bill amounts to about 1% of its 'total value'. It's like a one time $1000 special property tax on your $100K rental property. It sucks but it's not the end of the world. Besides, even if they had to pay $30 billion in back taxes, MSFT's customers are utlimately going to pay for it, not microsoft. It doesn't affect microsoft's market share in OS, Office, Servers, etc.

I pay for YouTube Premium in India.

Surely indians could find better things to spend their money on.

When India banned tiktok, I remember thinking wow, they've finally got their act together and are developing their own social media platforms. Instead, they gave up tiktok to pay for youtube garbage. A nation of 1.5 billion and they can't build up their own tech platforms. How long before they start paying for facebook accounts. India never fails to disappoint. A nation with immense potential and terrible leadership and no vision.

Attempts to change/form their views to be favourable towards dictatorships and antagonistic to democracies.

Rather than china, I'm more concerned about foreigners like you interfering in america and american social media.

What's your particular interest in this? You aren't even american.

As a huge fan of Buffett, I must point to the fact that can materially change this comparison in the years to come:

The beauty of financial 'journalism'. They choose arbitrary points of comparison to fit whatever they are trying to 'sell'. Wonder why 20 years and not the past 21 years or 25 years or 30 years?

- stock market returns were abnormally high for the past 15 years

Which was expected since we had QE and low rates for much of the past 15 years.

Mind blowing, knowing what happened later.

Sure. He also said everyone should buy when the markets were collapsing in 2008 ( aka when there is blood on the streets ). And that was great advice as well. But Buffet's problem is that he discounts tech. He famously chose not to invest in microsoft because he didn't understand software and technology.

Nomads basically made huge swaths of Eurasian land uninhabitable to peasant communities because your settlement will be raided until it ceases to exist.

Nonsense. Huge swaths of eurasian landmass is uninhabitable because of harsh climate ( siberia, gobi, etc ) or the distance from water sources. Even today, most of eurasia is empty.

In this fashion they were not unlike malaria and tsetse fly.

Dumbest thing I've read in a long time. These 'malaria and tsetse fly' improved the lives of settlers by enabling trade. Modern history was made by these nomads. Everything from the italian renaissance to the discovery of the new world was a result of trade by these 'malaria and tsetse flies'.

Eventually, settled societies concentrated sufficient amount of military and industrial power in one hands that nomads could no longer compete and fell apart, and these steppes were finally populated by villages and towns.

Wrong again. It wasn't settled societies that did this. The nomads conquered settled societies and militarized and developed them. From the mongols in much of eurasia, the vikings in europe, the turks in the middle east, etc.

Some of the smarter nomad communities figured out how to avoid that fate and settled down by themself.

Avoid what fate? The nomad communities conquered and ruled.
