Is it defensible (patents etc)? If it's easy to copy then it would be best to partner with those who need to invest the least to get this to market.

Right off the bat the author has embarrassed themselves. They seem to be oblivious to the fact that the majority of content on the most popular platforms is created using smartphones (Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat). Smartphones have actually democratized content creation and in a way that laptops and desktops never could. This should be obvious, not sure how this ever got upvoted.

1) Is CockroachDB actually popular? Like sure they have a couple big users, but is it gaining traction?

2) Would it be as popular as it is if they'd started with this license from the very start?

It's an interesting point but it's worth remembering that Uranium is far more valuable than oil by weight. Many people wouldn't mind sitting on vast amounts of Uranium.

Also, keep in the various oil disasters. Dealing in oil also comes with it's own risks. No need to switch from that analogy. In this light, likening data to radioactive materials seems to me like spreading fud...

On the feature FAQ joins are describe as 'functional' which doesn't inspire a lot of confidence but maybe it's just a perception thing. What exactly does functional mean?

A SQL db without joins sounds a lot like just a NOSQL db with a familiar query dialect.

Where's the video? I kind of expect an announcement like this to come with a video demo that is impressive or else why bother?
