There needs to be a great deal of introspection in the coming months. About what cultural practices are allowed to continue, and which are not. We need to have solutions for people that rely on dangerous ways of securing food an alternate method that's safer for everyone. We need to look closely at resource utilization and ask ourselves if we need to spend X amount of space/water for Y product, just because previously we have done so. We need to consume less, travel less, be more responsible.

Giving up some of the night sky for the billions of humans that live in rural areas, or live in countries where the physical internet is controlled by oppressive governments hellbent on withholding information from its citizens is worth it. The trillions of dollars it would take to build out infrastructure (and maintain) in Africa and India is worth it. In fact, even 20 Mbps would be life changing in bringing information to ~10-15% of humans is worth it.

IMO at least some of the problem is the historical laxness with which California has approached drugs. You have decades and decades of drug use being de facto legal to the point where now you will not be arrested for shooting heroin in front of a police officer. You could tax all the billionaires out of the state and they still not afford the rehab expense for all of the addicts in California. How many chances do you get at success? Why not just start taking heroin so you get a free stay indoors, with free food at a rehab resort?

If you're corrupt, the safest place to be is looking for the corruption. Refund the OTA, staff it with people friendly to you, reset the rules in your favor, now everyone of the opposite party is behind the eight ball. Sounds like a power grab to me.

Before the internet, centralized places of knowledge were needed, and you'd need to attend that place to find said knowledge. Think about how access to music caused the price of albums to drop. Education had not seen a similar dip in cost even though the supply is 100 percent saturated.

There's a dying class of professors who got in while tenure was still a thing that paid probably 1/10 of the cost for education kids are paying now. They have the rosiest glasses possible because they're making around 100k for zero competition in their workspace.

The vast majority of the time now a TA teaches the course or certainly grades the paperwork. Well over half of college degrees obtained will never pay for themselves.

A philosophy, social science or psychology degree are not important enough to pay 50k to get. Free college would be a complete disaster, and a massive waste of money.

The education cartel places liberal , financial shackles on kids who are less than 1000 sunrises away from going to prom. The liberal arts is a complete disaster for young people's financial means. So, you get somebody 100k in debt for something they could learn on the internet and guess what? They'll ALWAYS vote to raise taxes on the rich.

I worked at a state university for five years, doing research. The waste of extravagant, totally unsustainable. I was going to grad school free since I was an employee, dropped out to teach myself software and in four years I make nearly as much as the Phds. in a physical therapy department. All it cost me was time.

Then why just go outside and experience your unsatisfying life instead of paying to see a movie about it?

Ruby is the mainframe of the web. It will be around for a long time, but nobody should start a business built on it now. And just like the mainframe, there will be a select few who make a lot of money at it. IMO most companies will eventually just rewrite their projects in something more modern.

There is no singular policy that will solve global, complex problems. Sometimes capitalism isn't the answer, sometimes it is. Sometimes regulations are the clear answer, sometimes not.
