Thank you for this, wonderful break down of some amazing history. I have watched that demo many many times in my pursuit of human computer interface thinking.

I often wondered what happened to this piece of hardware… I still hold a deep belief that our current input methods are flawed(as amazing as they are) and we are in need of another leap forward.

Anyway great read - thank you again.

I experience the same things.

With the remember by association I realised I think I can recall the layout of any building I’ve ever been in. I don’t get lost once I’ve explored once.

I did a thought exercise and it’s not validated - but I could “imagine” walking through my pre primary school. But in darkness. So when I have a memory from long ago I now try walk the area I was in when it happened.

It brings up other surprising memories I had forgotten about that were like geo specially tied to the location.

The difference is dreams and imagination for me. Ask me about an apple while awake and I’ll close my eyes and it’s dark blackness of a void.Extreme aphantasia (I also am face blind)

Ask me about it while dreaming and it’s a full on 3D movie/VR experience.

Music too I can play that in my head no problem like my own radio (unless it has words then I can’t imagine it at all) - so I suck at karaoke. Even trying to sing with songs I can’t process it correctly unless it’s tonal sounds from the words.

For a neuroscience background we are certainly not all wired the same. You are correct though that aligning those descriptions and untangling social meanings and words from experience is tricky.

They do make all the above points in the article - including that it’s hard to verify this information.

Comparing it to Stalin is pretty apt - communist party with a figure head trying to hold onto power. Seems like more than just one person vanished and it’s all under totally opaque circumstances.

Yes - this is how ai has gone on for years ups and downs.

The trouble these days if I’m honest is either people are laser focused on the latest new toy (llm this year) or too new to the field that they don’t have a grounded understanding in what they are doing (ie they will all be trying to remix new models that have actually already been tried)

All of this while AI is still gate kept by companies with huge amounts of compute.

I will say that each new ai summer has gotten more and more dramatic though.

When I recall my dreams they are always lucid.

I have several times in my life figured out “algorithmic” problems and sorted out solutions to things (like a list of things to do next) while sleeping in a lucid state.

It’s really awesome when it happens but I don’t think it would be healthy and sustainable.

Start small and build it out.

1) I think you have a little bit of imposter syndrome happening - so check on yourself there

2) start small. For you I would suggest maybe a notebook (like Jypter) and just do one on say matrix cross products (linear algebra). Each time you hit a new concept make a fresh note book and write it down in code. Push yourself here so for example don’t just use a cross product function actually write one.

You will find the note books show your progress and give you some dopamine hit for each task.

3) if you really taking it seriously you will need to do the same with pen and paper small tasks at a time

…still suffering from previous start up success. Acquisition was enough to turn it into full time corporate job but we were no unicorn.

So now I’m stuck in a comfortable job. With 2 young kids and expenses.

Imo it’s because Sri Lanka has not supported 6Ghz yet. So the phone is not correctly configured to support limited bands it almost certainly needs a firmware update on the radio and some effort to ensure it works in that market… and google just don’t care about a small market possibly.

Source I’m in WiFi space

Almost certain this is because 6Ghz is not supported in Sri Lanka and you need to keep your WiFi radio firmware up to date and ensure the correct country limits apply to it in the correct way.

Poor form from google though. Obviously that country is not high on the bug list.

Gartner has placed AI at peak hype cycle recently.

Also in the last few years since a around 2010 when CNNs starting catching hold there have been several leaps that came with new hype. From deep dream images to what we have now.

I suspect gartner is correct here though as the next leaps in performance might be some time away.

Seems like you broke even and then some - let the rest ride. Unless you really need money but it sounds like you happy with the break even.

It really depends on your time line from here - after series A things will go well or could start slipping. So you need to think about it. If it’s a small series A there is more chance of another round sooner - if it’s a massive series a then maybe others have solid belief in this company and you should let it ride for sure.

I don’t believe you! I jest, but I find technical spaces have lots of cynicism floating around. I’ve not been a reader that long so not really sure - but a certainly get the sense it is somewhat normalised here.

I studied using ML just over a decade ago. I actually compared MLPs to SVMs and had a similar thought to this. It does seem like there is a regression on understanding some of the fundamentals and older tools of the trade.

I guess everyone gets focused on the newer things.

Really does seem like people rediscovering older endpoints.

Yes. You get to have conversations on the side and forge other connections in simple human ways that are otherwise challenging online.

Work can happen remotely but building a career happens face to face (specifically your networking - which you will use when you move jobs in the future)

I’m not saying it won’t happen remotely, and I might sound like a boomer but that’s personal thoughts On the matter.

Automatically link Dupes into a single post and set of comments.

And add subsections or maybe a set of tags -nothing like all of Reddit but a handful something like Tech/Buisness/science/art as with ask and show.

I’m not American and the fact that you can’t see the difference between hunter Biden and Trumps kids holding office - is so mind boggling stupid I fear for the future of your country.

I think the answer is pretty clear - Netflix made them gay.

But seriously this is nothing more than a person coming to terms with their sexuality and having an audit trail of media they consumed during that time . They drove the algorithm as much as it drove them is my guess.
