My issue is not that if icon represents what the application does but they all look alike.

The old school icons, even if they were not good representation of what applications did, were distinguishable from a distant. Once you memorized the icon, you would easily find it, on your machine or someone else’s. Even on very crowded desktop, each icon stood out.

Boring and same. Harder to use. It is for people who organize their books by the color of covers.

I prefer illustrations and old school icons. Every icon was unique and easily recognizable.

Now all icons look alike, and it takes longer to recognize.

You can’t always select the bottom 20%. Sometimes, whole teams or departments are eliminated. Employees are simply a number with cost and only thing matters is cost. They almost never look at individual performance or productivity.

CTOs don’t care about productivity at IC level. I have seen plenty of high performers getting laid off with rest of their teams.

Based on anecdotal data, companies don’t look at any personalized resume. Much better use of your time to send your standard cover letter and resume. Just apply to positions where you are, at least, 80% match. And yes you will never find 100% match, most employers make up requirements anyways.

The way I understand is that it is not FOV but zoom level. If you look through a camera with 50mm lens, the subject and background should appear same size as when viewed with naked eyes. Doesn’t matter if it is full frame or crop sensor.

It was a hard thing to listen to but I accepted it. I wish he told me the truth though.

Statistics.

I have been in situations where internally my mind was screaming that this is it and there is no escaping. I felt like giving up after a bad break up, getting stuck with bad investment, getting so sick that needed to hospitalized, getting fired, getting robbed, and perhaps many more times.

But stats are almost always in favor of things working out and that helps me keep going.

I have been in the industry for a long time. I used to believe this too.

In smaller companies where your work is very visible, your work will matter more. But I have seen plenty of examples where nepotism or favoritism got less qualified people in key roles while highly productive developers got stuck as low level ICs. Some developers don’t play career games and they want to stay ICs which is understandable. But I have never seen the best developer being promoted to key roles without them focusing on office politics, boosting about their work, and starting pet projects to help with promotion packet.

Industry needs to give an illusion of meritocracy in order to extract maximum productivity from fresh recruits. Otherwise, everyone would spent their playing politics game and no work will ever be done.

Your career is 90% politics and 10% skills. Junior devs enter the field thinking this is meritocracy but it is not. Until they realize the truth, their egos will keep getting hurt.

That’s the key.

Amazon is very convenient when needing something one off. But we are not going to renew Prime and slowly ween off it.

Still looking for alternatives though, Costco is okay, but when you want something asap, you need either to drive to stores or pay for same day delivery and tips.

I thought the term was spyware.

Surveillanceware almost sounds like something necessary to prevent bad stuff. Is this corporate rebranding to make spyware software sound less bad?

They are simply addicted to likes and photos of your children can hook them up easily.

I was very close to quitting software development but luckily I didn’t. I was frustrated with work-life balance, interview processes, etc.

Here people are comparing software development with minimum wage jobs and saying you should be thankful. Ok try comparing with equivalent jobs.

Many non-tech corporate jobs have similar or better work life balance. I have friends who were recently hired with one or two interviews. Pay may not be as high but their stress levels also seem a lot lower.

So I came close to switching career, took classes, talked to potential employers, they seemed eager to hire me. But I got cold feet. I thought about my dreams and decided to pursue one of my hobbies as a side business with ultimate goal of doing it full-time. At this point, job is simply a means to end

Yeah, I have heard that one way to ruin a hobby is to monetize it. Maybe it will happen to me eventually but I don’t feel burned out anymore. I’m energetic every morning, I work hard at my current job because it is providing seed money for my dream business.

This is to say go ahead try switching industry, take classes, make new friends, figure out something. Talking to various people actually helped me figure out my dreams.
