I think you might find that labs like the one in Wuhan are or were being operated at arms length by US companies and individuals anyway. I doubt much will happen here, maybe some funding cuts

It would be helpful if someone would be willing to perform a packet capture while experiencing and testing this problem. I’d be more than happy to analyse further.
We should see the right number of valid ICMP packets put on the wire and whatever response we get back will be telling
Rob clearly has an abundance of talent however it may never be realised if he continues on his current journey of pontification and naval gazing
Don’t worry he hasn’t gone too far he’s just in that studio apartment on the end of your street
Wow, I can’t believe the HN audience is so accepting of stretched layer 2 as a solution. It’s almost as though we’ve been invaded by middle management.
Stretched layer 2 is almost always a mistake.
This is an excellent write up, thank you
Isn’t it better to let people underestimate us? Especially any potential adversary.
Regardless, liminal warfare will continue to give rise to this kind of scenario so we should try not to outsmart ourselves in a desperate bid to be right
The reason big companies need lots of people is because if they didn’t have lots of people they wouldn’t be a big tech company. Really, that’s about it
Thank you Bernard. That will be all
That’s because he refused to read
I follow Peter Zeihan’s work quite closely too
I believe CEX is Centralised EXchange as opposed to DEX the Decentralised equivalent. This is just my best guess based on what I’ve learned from following this scandal so could be wrong. TLDR: FTX is not the only centralised exchange behaving in the manner being discussed (according to parent)
Edited for clarity
I would caution everyone to be extremely wary of anyone who actively promulgates the idea that they themselves are virtuous, selfless or altruistic. I cannot think of any genuinely good reason someone would want do this.
Instead, when it comes to these kinds of traits they should only be considered as possibilities after observing what a person does rather than what they say. Actions rather than words.
If they are using words good chance they are forgoing the actions. Otherwise why would they need to be telling you what they are?
Obviously the strategy for the first few weeks or months would have been formed months ago. Whilst DD for example is not performed for strategic reasons it remains critical to validating any strategic planning and decision making as those things are largely informed by what the information you have tells you about the business and it’s trajectory right now vs where you want it to be. So transition and short-term planning in all likelihood would have been finalised shortly after DD
I wouldn’t normally get angry about something like this but when the CEO talked about how upset she was that there were people out there who would do such harm I almost blew my stack. The level of wilful ignorance to your responsibilities required to feel that statement could be appropriate is astounding.
But most of all, if you’ve worked anywhere even remotely resembling a professional organisation in the last 10 years then it should be obvious just how bad things are inside Optus for this to have even happened. Something is deeply wrong there. This kind of breach should have thousands of things standing in the way of it being possible
The problem isn’t that the passwords are small, it’s that they aren’t being hashed. I wonder what level of data they are storing in plain text then?
Also if they aren’t able to accept other characters, I wonder what happens when you try?
I’ve worked “across” core payments(not banking) systems with the card schemes, westpac, St George etc. So I would say I’ve seen how bad things can get but your bank sounds like something next level.
As someone who only occasionally visits reddit, can I ask what the bots are doing? I’ve only ever seen bots that do things like correct spelling
It all changed when we started building computers that looked like fruit
Those are quite tall palm trees you have there
Routine seems to be a master regulator.
For a long time archeology was simply known as “digging” and following that “digging for things”
“and here we are now”
No of course, that’s a completely logical story arc. Good thing it makes so much sense otherwise I’d be skeptical you were leaving some information out.
I only started using Keybase as a useful tool for working with Hashicorp Vault in testing but have found some other features like encrypted Git and synchronisation of identity/PGP to be useful.
Does anyone know if there any other tools providing similar or partly similar functionality? Even something self hosted or a combination of complimentary open source apps would suffice.
I’m less concerned about the chat functionality.

It’s a short sighted and poor long term strategy. Eventually no one wants to work with you regardless of whether you can get things done.
Much better to build relationships which enable you to get things done by virtue of others wanting to look after you.
That's because they don't want to encourage the use of on-prem
Interesting to see some familiar topics here, I thought I was the only one.
You may be interested to know that some time in the last decade the Russians clearly signalled they would be prepared to use nuclear weapons in Europe. Brilliant play since they know the US sentiment around preparedness to enter another conflict that isn’t theirs.
By simply signalling they forced the US to consider other options hence the decisions to deploy tactical nuclear capabilities not subject to the same rules as strategic nuclear weapons. And last I heard they were deploying these tactical capabilities to a sub class also responsible for SSG.
I’m very curious to understand whether Russian simply signalling in the way that they did has caused the US to strategically compromise their second strike guarantee. That would mean that by simply introducing the idea they have let the US take the mutually assured destruction elements off the table that made it so risky to begin with.
Do you mean in that it fails by failing to be the thing that it purports to be? Making it no longer that thing? At what point does bread become toast?
I needed to do some development in Swift mid last year. I liked it and would continue to use if it weren’t for the fact that it seems like the only current and useful learning resources are Apples WWDC videos and similar content.
