Even if they don’t share a computer you can still set up their own computers in a shared space. We don’t put tvs in bedrooms either just to keep those rooms for reading/sleeping. Added bonus of keeping computers in common spaces is that your kids won’t disappear into their rooms one day and never come back out.

I hate ads and avoid them, but haven’t had to install an ad blocker yet. I only really notice them when searching for recipes, and if I had to go through that multiple times a day I probably would get an ad blocker. I do pay for YouTube to avoid ads, and don’t watch much user generated content because it’s too ad-like imo. I quit podcasts 3 years ago, because those ads made them become unlistenable just like terrestrial radio and I just can’t go back to that kind of listening experience. I started listening to audiobooks instead and don’t miss podcasts at all.

Merlin Bird ID 1 year ago

I love this app, but after going back to review some of the rare birds I’ve noticed that many of my saved recordings have inexplicably disappeared.

I do wish it could also identify other insects/animals. I originally got the app to identify whatever bird sounded like a squeaky door or wooden swing, and eventually saw that it was a squirrel.

Once they get into school you’ll need to use separate apps to communicate with their teachers, pay for fee/lunches, etc.

The communication apps are out of control since the teachers seem to have choice in what is required and so changes every year.

My middle schooler needs 3 different apps (and a Chromebook) to check/hand in homework and parents need 2 to receive communication from the teachers.

Yes, it’s much easier to use. You don’t have to look around for anything to use tiktok, it’s where you would expect it to be and everything makes sense. The UX reminds me of using iOS 1.

The content is more authentic too. A lot of what I see is from accounts that aren’t monetized, maybe 5% of the videos have less than 100 views.

I do use YouTube for music, but the rest of the content is so contrived and annoying. Instagram is too confusing to use, but all of the content feels like watching a commercial or QVC anyway, so I never bothered figuring it out.

You can get a basic flip phone from tracfone with a year of service (calls and text only, no mobile data) for $20-40. You can keep that plan but change to a regular smartphone and use google family app for parental controls.

If I want to buy something like that I set an alert on slickdeals.net Like everything else it used to be better years ago, but there are still some genuine great deals and lots of insight if you’re willing to sift through the comments.

When I was looking for a fridge a year or so ago I heard that Samsung was trying to fix their bad appliance rep and quality of parts had gone up, but I went with a different brand.

There’s been an issue the last few years of fiberglass escaping through the cover on memory foam mattresses. If I was mattress shopping I’d probably still get foam, but look for one without fiberglass or find some kind of allergy cover to at least contain it.

You can buy tiny tablets to add to the water that prevent mosquito larva from developing but don’t harm anything else. I’ve used the Mosquito Killer larvicide in my patio pond for years and it works well. Garden centers sometimes have pond sections with water plants like hyacinth (very invasive), water lettuce, lily.

Strange because I think brother did exactly what’s described in the article to me, and their toner is expensive as hell. I wouldn’t have bought it if there wasn’t a cheap generic available or if I knew they would suddenly claim all generic cartridges as empty. I think they may still have some printers that use the old kind of cartridges without chips.

I see more and more DVD collections on TikTok lately. I’m not sure how widespread it is but I think DVDs are coming back. It can be hard to find specific movie or shows streaming anymore even when willing to buy a digital copy and hope if doesn’t get taken away when you cancel prime or whatever.

I’m surprised that air purifiers without UV lamps seem to be the standard. If you’re going to buy something to clean the air, why not have the option to also kill bacteria/viruses/mold spores if any? Especially in houses like mine with kids spewing all kinds of contagion everywhere.
