Serious question. What is the purpose of these articles? They seem to popup often on mainstream media sites. They have little or no information other than obvious stuff about belt and road, etc.

Is the purpose just clicks? Does China generate clicks?

Downvote me if you want but I love the massive amounts of text in the early version. For me. The web is better with more text and less whatever else.

We are trying so hard to use Teams, but the performance is just not up to snuff. They took a shortcut using Electron to get it cross-platform. For such a large pervasive company, I don't think this shortcut is worth it as they should have just invested in native like their other desktop apps. It's going to hurt them long term in my opinion. I even submitted a user voice about the memory issue and slow UI.

This should be the top comment. This sort of "debate" has happened since the dawn of programming and will continue to happen until AI programs for us.

I doubt it's related at all. A client probably wouldn't specifically ask for a "React Native" app.

I would think this trend has more to due with app marketplace saturation.

I was duped and bought an overpriced GoogleTV LCD. It seemed great at first until it was pretty much completely unsupported after a year and all the apps stopped working. Never again.

I think it would behoove you to use Kotlin. When every other post on this board is about Kotlin, it is clear that is where the industry is headed. Use Kotlin, or risk being left behind.

That's the whole point of Electron period. Cut development costs. Meanwhile end-users (including developers) will suffer, because along with their chrome instances using hundreds of MB in ram, they will have electron apps open using similar (and in many cases more) amounts.

Agreed. And this is why I never tried to develop for it because this is a massively useful use case for our home that just wasn't available.

Read "Sending Jobs Overseas" and it makes sense.

1. Their children and their children's children are competing with 100s of millions that they didn't have to. They are worried about them. There is no guarantee that the quality of life of their family will be like their own.

2. They are worried about destabilization that could occur as the west declines.

I'm there too, except Drunk Swift. I tried Drunk React/Redux a few times but almost died.

The point is that it's interesting to infer trends. This is not the supposed to be the authoritative source for what people are doing during day and night. It's just interesting and you can glean some patterns for sure. Stack overflow is hugely popular and millions of developers use it.

Some people I guess are just so bright that they don't need it. That is not most people.

Agreed and up-voted. I think that is what I was trying to say in my rant. I guess as a developer though it's hard to come to terms with the fact that you are creating crap.

I went through the same thing when I was a musician so it stings doubly.

This is a repost. I'm guessing due to the blowup of the electron post.

There is no right answer. A huge fat bloated website can be successful (see BuzzFeed for the general population), or a lightweight text based informational website can be successful (see hacker news for you guys).

Same thing for the electron debate. A bloated web app ported to desktop could just be as successful as a native app and vice versa.

The problem is that it just sucks. The choices we have to make suck and everything sucks right now.

Development is now "pop." This is why websites are fat and web development is going to the desktop.

I'm not going to offer an opinion, but just anecdotal evidence. We don't use Slack, but since we have Office 365 I was tasked with evaluating if Microsoft Teams was something we should start using instead of Skype, etc.

I have advised to wait. I was seeing similar metrics to what OP is describing where the Teams Client was using 200+ Mb of RAM (many times more than VISUAL STUDIO).

Also the UI seemed laggy. I'm not 100% sure it is Electron, but the installer and interface seemed as much.

As someone who has to work in both for work, I understand your sentiment. I much prefer your world.

I think the difference is that in Desktop/Mobile, whatever crap has stuck to the wall for years - you must use because you don't have a choice. And usually this crap is fairly well documented because it is your only choice.

In the Web World, there is a bunch of crap thrown at the wall (every day) and you have no idea what will stick and what will slide off each year.

Maybe a poor metaphor, but just kind of how I feel on some days.
