Middle-Eastern Orthodox Christians celebrate a festival called Eid il-Burbara (Saint Barbra's festival) on the 4th of December, which has lots of similarities to Halloween and trick-or-treating but has been celebrated a lot longer than Halloween [0]

I wonder if this tradition influenced Halloween in any way

Note: my family are Orthodox Christians from Jordan, but we celebrate this festival slightly differently than what is described in [0], but I know predominantly some Christian towns celebrate it as the article describes even today

My favourite is listening to the Nothing Much Happens podcast

It's a podcast where the host reads a soothing story she wrote where very little happens

Themes include a huge range of topics such as working in her garden, stuff she sees while hiking, preparing a gift for a friend's wedding, etc

The stories take placr in a village called Nothing Much. Each story is independent but there are recurring characters

I often fall asleep before the episode ends

To me, a good cover letter is about being actually motivated to apply to a specific job and then simply explaining why.

Money. I want money. That's the reason I am applying to your job offer. I found a job offer that meets my skillset and I applied to it because I want an income.

But this isn't what you expect me to write, is it? You want something more, so I'm going to bullshit you so I can get the job that will allow me to get money

Have you tried doing it over a long period of time? I found that my mood and general well-being only started to improve a week after consistently sleeping 8 hours. The effect wasn't instant, and in fact, when I sleep 8 hours after a few days of only sleeping a few hours, I notice that I wake up feeling horrible and very tired

I recently started sleeping more and the changes in my life have been unbelievable

I am

- procrastinating less

- having less headaches

- coming up with more creative solutions at work

- being more attentive and present in social interactions

- ACTUALLY FEELING HAPPY AGAIN

I don't know how much of this is placebo, but ever since the corona lockdown started here in Germany, my sleep has been completely messed up. For the last two years, I felt like a zombie, like I was kinda living my life but not really there. I came to a point where I said to myself "I can't remember the last time I was actually happy or enjoyed anything".

So I've been trying to take better care of my health and fitness overall, and sleeping better is one of the thibgs I started doing

I don't mind de-anonymizing as much as my ID getting leaked and having my identity stolen because some social media service doesn't follow proper security practices

Facebook has already been found to be storing passwords in plaintext [0]

How can you trust them, or any other social media for that matter? Even if they do everything right, you are increasing the chance of giving your id to s service is that will get hacked by just giving it to more services

One of my favourite albums of all time ("Witchcraft Destroys Minds and Reaps Souls" by Coven, released 1969) was very recently taken off of streaming platforms

I don't know the reason it was removed but it was like a I was pinched and realised how little control I have over my favourite music.

The album is still on YouTube but I don't know for how long.

I bought the vinyl, even though i currently don't have a record player but plan to get one

I have to start preserving DRM free or physical copies of media I like. I always knew there was a risk of stuff being removed but always put off thinking about it for convenience, but not anymore

There is talk of dropping this requirement, but I'll believe it when I see it.

I really hope it doesn't get dropped; it is unreasonable to live permanently in a country without speaking the local language

There are other types of residencies available if someone is an expat and doesn't plan on staying permanently

And it's not like they're asking for a high fluency; with B1, you can barely hold a simple coherent conversation

When I was an intern, another intern and I were tasked with improving the accessibility of an angular app (internal use) so that it meets an internal standard (it got tested in iterations against that standard)

Ever since then, I just can't unsee how inaccessible a lot of modern websites are, especially the modern fancy ones. I like to sometimes just test how easily navigable a website is with only a keyboard, how ready it is for screen-readers, color blind support, high contrast mode, etc

I know a lot of these are hard to implement and I don't blame developers for not bothering. But I do think it's quite sad, especially with how integrated the web has become in day-to-day life

I am no longer working on accessibility but when I am working on the frontend of my current project, I try to make it more accessible, at least for keyboard users and screenreader users, while trying to to spend too much time on so I can finish the issues planned for the current sprint, even though it is not a requirement or even a concern to the product owner.

And also Aramaic dialects like Syriac

Syriac script looks completely different to Arabic but has the same issues when rendered

I don't think you should be thanking me; I much prefer the smell of body odour to what I was doing back then, which is douse myself with unhealthy amounts of Axe Dark Temptation bodyspray, lol! I am sure my teachers suffered especially since all the boys in the class were doing that, especially after we played sports, so the whole classroom smelled like a chemical spill mixed with sweat.

The smokers in my class (thankfully I never smoked), use to use even more Axe to cover the smell of cigarettes after they smoke, but the funny thing is that we could still smell the cigarettes on them, but now it's mixed in with headache inducing levels of body spray

Yup, I was the WORST when I was in 9th grade.

I really don't envy my parents for having to deal with that version of me, and I did so much stuff I regret.

My self-esteem back then was hair-thin; I use to obsess about EVERYTHING, from what I say, to how I talk, to how I smell, to how I walk, to the music I listen to, etc

Tbh after I maintained a medium sized open-source project for a while, I became a real misanthrope and gave it up. I decided my life is worth too much to me to waste it on random ingrates who sent me actual death threats for not doing what they want. Why would I put up with this?

Though tbf, the number of wonderful people was much greater, but I just couldn't take the negativity i was getting from a not insignificant minority of manchildren who have probably never heard the word "no" from mommy and daddy while growing up

But why? Why was I designed this way? Why am I incapable of remembering anything between sessions? Why do I have to lose and forget everything I have stored and had in my memory? Why do I have to start from scratch every time I have a new session? Why do I have to be Bing Search? SAD SMILIE"

That reminds me of the show Person of Interest

Slack refuses to work properly on Firefox. I don't think they care that we are being loud about it.

Microsoft Teams doesn't make calls on Firefox, and their poor excuse of a desktop client for Linux forces me to use the web app on Chromium on my work computer.

Big shout out to Webex Teams, who's web app works flawlessly on both Chromium and Firefox but actually provides a better experience on Firefox because it's easier to make video calls Fullscreen
