X11 screen lockers are not secure at all if you can get them to crash in any way, they revert to showing the full desktop unprotected.

What would be the point of a program owning a patent? Is it going to charge you royalties for use? Where does that money go? If it gets it’s own bank account, what happens when you run two instances of the same program? Do you split the account in half and then join it when one exits?

It’s all nonsensical anyway.

Australia did it better by just providing a regular income to everyone who lost their job. That way everyone keeps paying their bills/rent and things return to normal after.

There are absolutely some % of people who are so poor at financial management that they used the last year as a chance to not pay rent and instead buy luxuries. These people have dug themselves a huge hole.

I feel like the “server test” rule OP talks about doesn’t really matter and shouldn’t. Who cares if the browser downloaded it from Instagram or the site itself. The actual result is the same. It would make sense that embedding is exactly the same as reposting, either allowed or not allowed for both.

A similar situation is that I can listen to music on my phone with Spotify legally but if I plug my phone in to a speaker system and play the music for a large group in public, it’s no longer allowed. But the music actually came from Spotify so how is it different?

Tech people always feel entitled to loopholes in laws like “this file is just a bunch of bits, how can a number be illegal??” But this thinking is not useful for a functional legal system.

Probably more of a pain if you have a large amount of data and a slow internet connection. For me it all fits in the 50GB file and downloads in a few minutes. I guess pulling out 1TB of data on a slow connection would be difficult but I can’t see how google could make it better since downloading and extracting a 1TB zip on its own would be almost impossible.

If a literal terrorist files a complaint then the police department can pick them up. The complaints department only needs to handle local citizen complaints.

Did this for years. Finally gave up last year. It’s so much work, discovery is a huge pain, listening on all devices is a pain. None of it was worth it.

Now I just use Spotify and don’t care. I don’t need the extra work in my life.

That’s fine and valid, but many people make enough money where slumming it for some small savings no longer makes sense.

macOS still offers benefits. If you have an iPhone, everything is synced up for you so your reminders set on your Mac will ping you on your phone. You get the anti loss/theft features of find my, the insanely efficient M1 chip and a load of other things.

The catch is it costs more then an iPhone, gets about 2 hours battery even if the screen is off, and has a cpu slower than a $50 android.

This just proves it’s even harder. Even if by some insane luck you manage to build something that is very good, the general public still doesn’t want it.

And only a tiny fraction of them would care. I’m quite happy with my iPhone and don’t want a random HN freedom phone. I don’t ever even intend to develop something for my phone and if I did, I would want to target android and iOS.

Over 2TB is hidden behind an expanding button. They went up to 10TB iirc.

The average person can walk in to the apple store and walk out with a MacBook and usb c hub just fine.

I don’t see a problem with them. The majority of users never need one and even when I use them I usually use them infrequently. I often leave them on the ends of cables. My display port cable has a usb c dongle left on it so it’s like it’s natively usb C anyway.

Sure, if you do some weird stuff or have an extreme use case, I can see why you would want more built in ports, but for the majority of users, they only plug in the charging cable and maybe video out.

The pixel phones are virtually unfixable. I had one and there was no official google location to take it too. Went to a 3rd party store and they said they can attempt it but even with the right tools there is a chance the display will smash if they open it.

Meanwhile I have replaced iphone batteries pretty easily myself and the near by store does it for a reasonable price as well

It’s unreal the difference. Almost every one of my android devices has bricked, failed in some other way, or become unusable due to a lack of updates while my apple devices have lasted so long that they become completely obsolete hardware wise long before they stop getting updates.

I have a 2015 MacBook Air and a 2014 iPad which both still receive updates and work fine while my 2017 pixel phone is unsupported and stopped booting recently. My nexus 5X also bricked and stopped getting updates shortly after release.

It’s not surprising when people earning $200k aren’t so enthusiastic when the rest of the population gets the chance to buy a house. Honestly the lack of empathy from people here is a little gross.

Only if you don’t build up walkable areas and public transport. With high density housing many people won’t even own cars as there is not much point.

The cost of a battery replacement is less than 10% of the cost of the phone and it is something you only really need to do once for a phone. Of course it costs more than some bottom tier android because you are paying someone first world wages to swap the battery rather than having a child labor operated factory in India pump it out.

Replacing the battery with a smashed screen is almost impossible without also replacing the screen because you need to use a suction cap to pull the screen off. If it is smashed you need to scrape off all the chunks which removed what is left of the screen. These days the glass on the iPhone is much stronger than it once was so I don’t know anyone with a cracked screen.

At the time android phones were suffering the same problem. The nexus 6p would randomly crash at 30% charge.

That’s not an option. It’s not that the battery was flat. It’s that when the CPU hit peak power consumption the voltage of the battery would drop low enough to cause the CPU to fail. The only option is to limit power draw or to crash.

This is a bit like saying we are not running out of water because there is plenty of water in the ocean. All that space in the middle of nowhere isn’t very useful because people do not want to live 50km away from cities.
