I'm trying to understand how all these safeguards failed.

But in any case, H1-B visas can lower the wages of engineers without H1-B holders earning less than Americans. It's just like any import. The import itself doesn't have to be sold for cheaper, it's just that the presence of the import lowers the price via competition, so that both the import and the local good are cheaper than the price before importing started.
The blame also lies with the study authors and the peer reviewers for allowing the article to make these claims based on their results. E.g. from the abstract

All imports are "cheap" whether labor, steel or iphones. Cheap is good, because if you can get something cheap it means you can get it with minimal resources.
The only reason to limit immigration is externalities. For example, Israel has very open immigration for Jews. It does not allow open immigration for African refugees because they believe it would have a negative impact on their society. For some strange reason, other nations are fearful of stating the same thing, but they clearly have something like this in mind when they limit immigration.
Cheap labor is a net positive. The only valid reason to oppose immigration (and I think it is very valid) is the negative social externalities that immigration causes.
Actually the article is completely wrong.
If you make money "squarely" as described in I-IV, then you have created some value. Cashing out in section V is simply consuming that value.
All we can say (given the assumptions in I-IV) is that the person was a net positive (or zero) for the Congolese economy.
The technical mistake that the author makes is not realizing that adding value to the Congolese economy means increasing the total amount of physical wealth in the economy. When the person cashes out their yacht, they are simply exchanging cash for the physical wealth they helped create.
I don't think you can logically say that I-IV are "libertarian twaddle" and that V "brings it home", because V is predicated on I-IV being true. If you're interested in the theoretical basis behind "econ 101" I suggest you look into general equilibrium theory.
I really liked the compassion and care that MMM shows for his kid. In too many articles like this, it's clear that the author cares more that the child adopts the parent's ideology than that the child is actually happy. The goals and methods were moderate: earning one's own money (at an appropriate age), learning to control one's own life (I would add "to the extent possible") and not over or undervaluing wealth.
My only reservation was the artificial 10% interest rate. The current interest rate is 0%. Over the last 100 years interest rates averaged 5%. This is a concern to me because people on the Right tend to fetishize compound interest rates, while MMM seems to focus on true fundamentals.
There is an inversion in politics, where the left are more anti-Asian than the right. Letting people express anti-Asian sentiment (even though equivalent sentiment against other groups would be verboten) is both a convenient escape valve for the populace (see the LA riots) and also makes the left seem less extreme.
See also the #cancelcolbert controversy[0]. Imagine if this had been any "oppressed" group instead.

I'm not sure what you mean by "clinical" in this context, but I don't think the prescription thing was a charade to add some extra placebo effect. Rather, it was probably because once you start claiming to treat depression, you are regulated like a prescription drug.
Just think how much worse the WASP landlords are, given that the WASP elite are the ones with actual political power.
Existing welfare addresses the problems of unemployment. Not as well as welfare in other English speaking countries, but it still ameliorates the problem.
My position is that even with the current welfare system, technologies that increase productivity, but make some people unemployed, are still good from a utilitarian perspective. The trickle down effect (including through the existing welfare system), which benefits the entire poor population, makes up for the negative effect on the newly unemployed.
EDIT: as always, I have no problem with downvotes for my other opinions, but it's really sad to see downvotes for economic orthodoxy. If anyone reading this downvoted me, please educate yourself on mainstream economic thinking. You don't want to be remembered as an anti-vaccination advocate.
When disagreeing, please reply to the argument instead of calling names. E.g. "That is idiotic; 1 + 1 is 2, not 3" can be shortened to "1 + 1 is 2, not 3."

And the topics (the problematic ones of which I listed) clearly suggest they are anticipating similar content. If you want to defend both hackathons, please do so, but don't try to win this argument on an irrelevant technicality.
If by safe you mean you can ridicule anyone as long as they are a cis white male, then I'm sure they are keeping it very safe.
I don't care. I'm just pointing out the hypocrisy where any remotely sexual imagery[0], comment[1] or performance[2] in tech results in controversy, firings and apologies, and yet events like this are ok because they wear progressive politics on their sleeve.

That's precisely my point. I don't think that it's ok that we have one set of standards for sex-deprived male cisgender nerds, and another for women of various ethnicities.
Saying that sexual content is inappropriate during all work/industry related events seems overly broad to me. After all, our industry is diverse and even includes respected companies like pornhub. There are bound to be people in this industry who are very comfortable with sexual content, and it's not my place to judge them for expressing that in an appropriate context.
That just highlights more hypocrisy. If you are against objectification, how can you consider the porn industry respectable?

I don't believe that the difference is serious vs non-serious events. It's pretty clear that no company or group would dare to create a light hearted hackathon featuring sexual content, if it hadn't been proposed first by a progressive cause (in this case mocking startup culture for being a White cishet male bubble). And Microsoft apologized for that song[0]. Note that this event is sponsored by real tech companies.

But we don't owe it to make sure that no one is ever worse off. There are people who never had jobs in the first place. If a trucker loses is job because of technological change, why is the trucker now entitled to more than the person who never had a job?

Your point was that one consequence of having a large Somali community was great restaurants. This kind of statement gets repeated so often (and posts like mine repressed so often) that people start to believe that diversity really does just mean great food in the real world. So when I see a post like yours, I feel the need to correct the record, so that anyone reading will question the mainstream liberal dogma on diversity.
This hackathon is a good example of the hypocrisy of the progressive movement. Because the hackathon is clearly motivated by progressive politics (making fun of what is considered to be a White cishet male dominated startup scene), they get to break all their own rules regarding appropriateness or decency. Note that the hackathon is sponsored by Mozilla SF, so it can't be claimed this is not an industry event.

Care to expand on this? If you mean to imply that this means automating trucking would be a bad thing, I disagree.
According to mainstream economics, jobs are not an externality (although they are during a recession). The total amount of money to go around after an efficiency increasing change, will be greater. With taxation, this means that in theory everyone can be made better off. In practice, the truckers will be worse off, but you could at least arrange taxes so that the percentage of people earning less than X decreased, for all X.
Then the only argument left is that the change is somehow unfair to truckers. But that viewpoint unfairly privileges the status quo.
One thing that is true is that the adjustment period will be hard.
I never quite got why it's ok for the stupid hackathon projects to be negative, demeaning, and have NSFW content, even though these things are completely verboten in every other tech event. Is there some kind of certification[0] that the hackathon organizers got to be allowed to do this?

E.g. if Microsoft had sexual content at one of its conferences, or organized a "fun" conference with sexual content, they would be immediately attacked and forced to apologize. My claim is that having progressive politics and being implicitly endorsed by the progressive community, acts like a kind of certification.
I don't see the logic there. Either branding is cruel or it isn't. This issue should be decided on its own merits. Maybe castration should be done with anesthetic, or not done at all.
I read the article, my point was that you can't just ignore animal cruelty issues, or relegate their discussion to articles on artificial meat.
Not saying that this is the reason people are doing it less, but branding seems like a cruel act that should be avoided if at all possible.
