Feel like the overpriced PC adapter really killed off what could have been a thriving scene for the second Kinect. Amazing piece of tech for its time.

If you have a semi decent soldering iron it's very easy to make a DIY pc adapter btw. The 36w power requirement is very easily managed now with most GaN chargers too (12v3a).

For some reason the DS didn't take off at all in the area I grew up (neither did the original Pokémon games despite seemingly being massive everywhere and the cartoon being a big hit in my school).

I think what most people call "woke" is probably just a reaction to the obvious emptiness of many of the things politicians like Kamala Harris chose to focus on whilst ignoring more concrete issues. A lot of it was stuff there never was a solution for.

Would an old rooted Nook Simple Touch suffice for your use case? They're very cheap these days and you've direct access to some early version of Android on them

I definitely found the world a bit harder to navigate for solving puzzles than the 2D games but the really horrible puzzles in grim fandango were the time based ones that the engine could do but not remotely well. There was one in particular with a wheelbarrow that was fairly easy to figure out but an insane pain to coordinate with the game's controls on our PC

I was at an animated film earlier this year where they put the recorded q&a on before the film.

Had the effect of making one pair of noisy kids totally lose their attention and proceed to run around the theater for the rest of the film.

Is anyone actually paying to see some recorded q&a? The live ones are usually turgid enough but at least the people are right there

Could definitely make a decent markup buying broken ones and reselling them all fixed up too; I got seven "broken" ones a few months ago on eBay for $20 and almost all of them just had dead batteries

I think it's less about money and more about the endless access to metrics and analytics which will impact how you feel about your project. A forum of maybe a few dozen people you somewhat know loving something 20 years ago would have sufficed but now it all tends towards vague bigger numbers of people you have minimal knowledge of to feel at all good about the effort put in. In lieu of 10,000 likes, which might ultimately feel hollow anyway, making a couple hundred dollars will probably suffice.

I made a super niche modding tool a few weeks ago; it's got one star on GitHub but the two nerds that have actually used it are delighted with it and I'm very happy about that. The notion another few in the future will find it is oddly nice to think about

The common headphone jack issue is that one of the pins comes loose very easily but that's a very simple fix of adding some extra solder. Beyond that the audio port gradually gets looser to the point headphones will very easily fall out; I think if you just never remove the headphones this will be much less likely to happen.

The main failures I've seen on eBay are: - dead battery (these are often in amazing condition otherwise because they were bought and hardly used) - loose audio jack (simple solder fix but may have the looseness issues) - broken membrane buttons (probably not very fixable?) - faded screen (probably has lots of other issues but generally usable)

How was the usb c installation? Feels a bit beyond my soldering skills. I mainly use a zip but I put together a very slim mini to c cable for my Clip+ that does the job.

Don't suppose you could tell me the name of the part they use for the headphone jack? I can find loads that look almost right but never the exact model

I've a few backups but I've only destroyed one of them (somehow fried the board soldering the headphone jack back down).

They're fairly durable other than the headphone jack and the clip from what I've seen

Before I realised the app was a buggy mess I was very surprised to see it had an interests section that provided no context for the interests. For example: virtually everyone had Domination or Submission as one of their interests but no context whatsoever of which role they wanted. To not realise how fundamentally wrong this is for that scene implies they're clueless across the board.

No one migrates from the first big thing so it's a waste of time. Feeld should be killed by this and it'll barely make a dint

They had turnover of £39m last year and profits of £5.5m (double the previous year, quite good for a UK business of this scale). If they don't have full time devs it'll be shocking, certainly had the money to sort crap like this out

It was so bad when I used it, if it wasn't bizarre memory leak or privacy issues it was extremely poorly executed UX.

Between it and Fetlife there's some huge issues with those communities just sticking with the first app that emerges regardless of quality

I didn't exactly know of it but I had enough glitches on that terrible app when I was using it that it was obvious there was info being sent that it didn't mean to and some atrocious performance issues that made it feel like it was crudely thrown together

It's not random though, it's the determined content for Twitter's target marketing demographics. Wrestling had this issue for years trying to attract new advertisers. The ones that were already there were firmly for less in demand demographics that more greatly represented wrestling's historical viewership and their presence had the effect of making it a less attractive option for higher status brands.

A random person outside of HN mightn't consciously notice anything, a marketer absolutely will and they'll notice how all these kinds of factors will impact the efficacy of a campaign actually increasing sales rather than just being viewed
