These "oscillations" are compatible in my view. Empathy does not equal enablement - a maxim that is at the core of a lot of confusion in the modern-day culture war. Hearing the opposing view, communicating in a kind and responsive way isn't supposed to lead to an implementation of false ideas.

Trump is a sociopath who quite successfully exploited the anxieties of millions of people... but their grievances do matter - it's in all of our interest to lift everyone up, not dismiss or even humiliate half of the country. However, we should also recognize that Trump is not the way to accomplish that, he does not offer any solutions, he just mirrors and magnifies the worst parts of the human condition.

Thanks for your analysis. To clarify my earlier remark: there must be something _personal_ that is at play here. While political, social, cultural dissonances are all often very visible and clearly externalized, personal grievances and deep confusion can be left unseen.

I am hinting at depression of a kind a person experiences late in their life when all hope for change and personal growth starts to fade away. But I also don't want to limit the discussion to this observation only, there are other emotional and intellectual hardships involved: resentment, unhappiness, feeling of injustice, etc.

Question #3 offers a great opportunity to make the interviewer feel very uncomfortable. Tell them your bad habit is sticking boogers on your keyboard.

Questions like #5 are some of my least favorite. I don’t know if it’s only prevalent in the US, but can we stop throwing around phrases like “why are you the best” or “what is your super power”, etc. Not only this makes me cringe, it also leads to an uncomfortable moment since I always reply that I am not the best and don’t have super powers.

I would feel grateful for this question. It would allow me to quickly reject this company and move on.

I am not trying to nitpick - just giving my honest feedback. This submission is not for a technological breakthrough that I would admire from a theoretical perspective.

This problem has been solved many times over the last decade or so. So claiming that _this_ is the future and not the more established (and smooth!) solution has to be supported by at least some evidence.

Depends on the user’s expectations, I guess. The demo you linked does not feel close to native yet. Lots of reflows, small shifts, inconsistent rough animation… even for a web app it’s not smooth enough (iOS Safari)

Security cameras in universities seem to be accomplishing… nothing. I am getting very frequent emails (2-3 per week) from one of the top US universities with blurry unusable screenshots of perpetrators stealing items, breaking in, assaulting students, etc. Makes me think - should they not invest into better security instead?

In an ideal world - yes. But seeing how overworked professors and other staff members already are in top universities, I doubt this is top of mind for them. There are courses with hundreds of enrolled students, weekly homework, practical projects, etc. IMO somewhat centralized DS tools are more suited to handle this load than an individual contributor (a professor in this context).

Agreed! It all probably started with big tech promoting the “data-driven decision” paradigm. Of course, in many cases this approach is effective, but it’s not a panacea and has its limits. It’s tempting to interpret availability of any data as an amazing untapped resource, but in many cases analyzing it is just a massive waste of resources and could be more effectively replaced with traditional tools (surveys and such).

While I agree with your general skepticism, I also believe there are ways these data could benefit the students. Extracting value from operational data could mean modernizing curriculum, offering more office hours, etc.

Good point! I must admit I am not immune to that. While I wasn’t celebrating Covid deaths I certainly wasn’t mourning anyone who died because of what I considered was their own “fault” (Eg not following quarantine guidelines). Which is still quite un-empathetic.

I might be wrong but I like to believe that there is a critical difference between gossiping about Becky and laughing at people dying from AIDS. Saying that… maybe I just don’t know - I don’t like either and in my head there is a clear distinction.

I don’t know enough about your situation so not talking about your dad specifically… but there must be something else involved here than just culture war and political powerlessness. Eg going to church and laughing at people who die from AIDS are not easily compatible (or at least _should not_ be easily compatible) parts of one’s life.

He is popular because he is a populist like Trump. He offers simple solutions to complex problems. Solutions that don’t work but empower people unwilling or incapable of committing to more complex solutions.

Very cool! Makes me wish your solution was integrated into OP’s app (or vice-versa). This looks like the future of clean, customizable online content consumption.

One feature I would like to explore more is making algorithms completely customizable (as an advanced option perhaps). I.e. allowing changing all params manually in addition to being able to use your presets.
