The reason you posted here is that you have a problem and are looking for a solution. You know that this is aimless development, however working out at the gym is aimless too. Both help you exercise, but neither are doing good except for getting better at starting development projects and burning calories, respectively. Instead of going to the gym, you could work at Habitat for Humanity or similar and build houses or do other volunteer work that requires physical effort. The development equivalent is working on open source projects that need help.

"Lloyd Blankfein and Jamie Dimon get billions of dollars for free, from the Federal Reserve."
That is the fault of our legislature and our presidents (former and current) for supporting them, not Wall Street. If you chastise people for taking free money, then may natural selection take its course and morons can run our top companies. BTW- rollingstone, huffingtonpost, politico, foxnews, etc. should be banned hosts from links as far as I'm concerned, if the intent of HN is to limit politicking.
Jobs had a way with words.
Will Amazon Kill Off Publishers? Not the big ones. Did Apple kill off record companies? Not the big ones. Did Walmart kill off the other merchants? Not the big ones.
Large companies at some point suffocate the smaller ones. The big fish eat the little fish and there is talk of the government needing to step in and trust bust. Then the little fish comes along that can outdo the big fish and the big fish gets hurt and the little fish propagate again. This is the circle of life in capitalism, and there is nothing wrong with it.
People would benefit from studying history, but I don't think that "history of business" is taught. It should be.
"Don’t worry about the student debt too much"
How about instead you should try to get a job to start paying it off asap? "Not worrying about it" could be interpreted as "debt is ok- it is what our government does, so rack it up".
could someone remove this spam?
This may be Apple jumping the shark, imo. Why not spend that time and money making Apple TV better without having to include the T.V.? There is no way they can get much market share of the T.V. business. The economy is down and when people go to BestBuy they are going to choose low to mid tier.
As a Gen-X'r (even though we don't call ourselves that- you should know), I say that is an awesome post. I'm pretty much sick of everything from politics to war to our economy to "Occupy" to "Bush" to "Obama" to "Jobs" (both kinds). What an economic downturn and world failure is good for is good music written about hard times. Where the fuck is our good music?
"There's just one small caveat: it might destroy our entire species."
:) No, but I think focus on the internet and electronic trading probably had a hand in the downfall of the economy. Look at how volatile the market has been since the 1990s. At some point we should all really evaluate whether we've gone too far. But technology is advancing our species also. We may be able to cure newly found diseases with the press of a button someday.
The problem is that it challenges the "status quo" in way that many find ignorant, misguided, flailing. Those that have fond teenage or college memories of the 60s (which I don't) would appreciate the protests, megaphone speeches, and drum circles. But to me, I'd find these people much more intelligent if they were meeting on their own regularly and quietly and sending letters to their senators, becoming engaged in politics and running for office.
"Clearly they lack consolidation and any real agenda for change. But hell, you have to admire their stoicism. They’re dancing and singing as the weather slowly deteriorates into a cold soggy mess. And you know what? They’re smiling."
What bothers me about seemingless aimless activism though is that it can be easily manipulated. And even if it isn't manipulated, groupthink can be just as bad and chaotic (as is the case with riots). These people would be better off consolidating and meeting with people of like minds in a more organized fashion on a continual basis rather than getting together with people that have intent far from their own.
I smell a disaster in the making. What if it goes into the wrong orbit? It could cut into the ISS! Also, wouldn't a giant magnet make more sense?
