What about accessibility?

Does this mean the end of custom accessibility controllers?

The other day they randomly changed the “Like” button for an “Add to Playlist” one. Though they did communicate that change pretty clearly (there was a popup notifying the user about this behaviour etc.), I think it was a horrible spontaneous decision. I’m glad they reverted the thing the same day it was rolled out. Why doesn’t Spotify add an opt-in for experimental features/updates or distribute an “experimental” version of the app through app stores?

It might mean that the key itself is not disabled and thus free to be bound to some other action, but I agree that the remark sounds a bit odd.

I find the Compose feature to be quite useful, so I used to have Compose key on Caps Lock on Linux. After I’ve switched back to Windows, I found WinCompose to be a pretty decent equivalent of Compose for Windows, and found out it can also override Caps Lock behaviour (though in about 1% of cases the default Windows Caps Lock behaviour breaks through for a brief moment) and reassign the Caps Lock function to some other, less frequent combination of keys. In my case pressing both Shifts at the same time acts as a Caps Lock toggle.

I feel like the HN title here is misleading. You can’t delete your Threads profile, you can only delete your Instagram account and your Threads sub-account will follow.

Also this is quite clearly stated inside the Threads app: “Some settings, such as deleting your account, apply to both Threads and Instagram and can be managed on Instagram”.

Deactivating your Threads account, on the other hand, will not affect your Instagram account in any way, this warning is there in the corresponding Settings section as well.

Not neccessarily. You do need to download the Threads app and make an account (or rather a sub-account, since it’s tied to your Instagram account).

You missed the point. Nobody’s saying chip is the culprit—“M1” in this context refers to the Macbook series powered by the eponymous chip. Which means those Macbooks are only a few years old at most, yet there are 49 pages of user reports that their screens are prone to cracking for no reason.

No. I only ever use it as a last resort when I need some non-sensitive text double-checked. And by “use” I mean that it’s installed as a keyboard app on my smartphone (where I believe I can keep its possible logging activity to a minimum), but not used as an actual keyboard, only as a grammar checker to be activated whenever and wherever I need it.

I really like how people striving for freedom in software are always ready—and eager—to take away the freedoms of companies they don’t like. “I want to be able to do whatever I wish for with software I use, but I don’t want people who make software to be able to do anything with their own products”, huh?

I don’t know if it’s still the case, but Lazarus used to be a part of the high school IT course in Ukraine. Might be that they’ve already ditched Pascal for Python.

I remember stumbling upon a website which did this, but instead of just taking 100 years it prompted the user to select his country and gender. The algorithm then used data about the average lifespan of the selected gender in the selected country to tell the user how much they have left to live.

I don’t know if Rockstar Social Club dice CAPTCHA is still around, but about half a year ago I’ve had an opportunity to experience it. That CAPTCHA required you to select one image out of six in which two displayed dice would add up to a certain number. To pass the test, you had to do this 10 times in a row, making no mistakes. The worst part was that it didn’t even tell you that you failed; it restarted the whole thing only when you finished selecting the last 10th image.

An interesting definition of “not a monopoly”: being forced to advertise your competitors on your own platform, for free.

AFAIK Xiaomi created its Mi subbrand because of ‘Xiaomi’ being too difficult to pronounce by non-Asians. But now that people got used to the ‘difficult’ version, they’re getting rid of the ‘Mi’ subbrand.
