hey hey, this is exactly what happened to my engineering career right here.

"This code will never be used."

"Oh, ok." proceeds to write garbage to test out various features and different ways of doing the same thing

"Hey, this code is garbage and lacks consistency. Lets show it to everyone to warn them about this guy. We won't mention it until letting him struggle a couple years, but make sure he doesn't get any interesting work."

and because it's almost trivial to run a subscriber supported site out of business

3 steps:

1 - fund high quality, totally free content, great UI, minimal ads

2 - poach customers from subscriber sites, wait them out. will take about a year. they'll go broke.

3 - start to optimize for "engagement" (ad views). profit.

Every job I've applied for that required any level of physical work had "must be able to lift 50 lbs" as a requirement. It's a little heavier than a step ladder, bags of potatoes, flour, cement and gravel are typically in that range as well. It's not an unreasonable requirement. You typically won't lift them overhead, but floor-to-shoulder is a very common lift.

Extra fun fact about tinkering: The air gap in the transformer means that your GFCI won't detect a ground fault, and your circuit breaker won't detect a short because as far as the mains line is concerned, there is nothing wrong with the circuit.

This doesn't happen under normal operation, because the chassis allows for a short and/or a ground fault. But when you take that chassis off, and especially when you take the transformer out, you're putting yourself into a life threatening situation.

TL,DR: Microwaves cook things, including you.

yeah, it's 90% hypothesizing. Don't take it as me saying what you should or shouldn't do. Obviously, I'm not in a position to do that. It's just... if your neighbour pulled up with a car that's powered by cooking oil, you'd probably look at it and go "really? that can't work." and hope that he understands that it's curiousity, confusion and frankly a lack of knowledge of something so foreign.

I've seen a couple guys (father/son) try it out. Dad said it basically reversed his diabetes, son was pretty much OK the whole time I knew him.

I dunno man. Carnivore diets aren't for me. I just don't get how it works, doesn't mean that it doesn't work though.

I would disagree that the kind of data being talked about lends itself to misuse. Management in general, and especially in well run companies, tends to be responsible and judicious in their use of various metrics and getting a good, holistic view of employee interactions and engagements is vital to ensuring that high performers are identified and adequately mentored. Ideally, this type of data could be paired with a sentiment analysis engine and an emotional identifying model that could help coach negative employees toward more positive and beneficial interactions. This is an area that would require a delicate balance to prevent misuse, but, given most HR departments hesitance to act without strong background information, it would likely be a net positive in nearly every case.

'scuse me I need to go wash my mouth with soap. I just gamed the metrics that would be produced with this and I feel dirty.

Are you consuming entire animals? Just meat? No snark there, either. Skeletal muscle alone isn't a complete diet. It's lacking in a few areas. Eating nothing but meat does seem to improve body composition, insulin sensitivity, some autoimmune conditions, some people report more steady energy levels... but, scurvy is eventually a problem, as will be hemochromatosis, among other things.

thread poster could include a fourth alternative... the "hesitant adopter," left behind when they missed the bus early on and every goodname they wanted was taken while they took the tour of the service. not even the badnamers want them. they're not the type to "go along to get along"

How normal am I? 4 years ago

I got a 4.8... the model also told me I lied about my age by nearly 20 years, so that's nice. I'm a very young looking ugly.

"Pardon, Officer, but we're firing several employees today and would you like you to assist. We're concerned they might say bad things to us."

"ON OUR WAY!"

This is a disgusting scenario. I hope they weren't misusing on-duty police resources for this.

Gravity is not, in fact, the attraction of lesser mass to greater mass. Gravity is the repulsion of lesser mass by greater mass.

In the case of the Earth, this means you are repulsed toward the Earth by the weight of the column of space "above" you, and are only prevented from falling through the Earth by its density. The Earth is relatively equally displaced by the column surrounding it, meaning you do not notice this effect.

Gravity seems to come in waves because all things in the relevant column are moving, but the shifting of mass is almost unimportant to your perception because it is such a small value. The magnitude and frequency is such that it goes unnoticed to all but the most sensitive equipment.

.... completely no evidence available, but, it sounds kind of reasonable.

Now Monkeypox 4 years ago

and there's no way of knowing if you have prions in your body, and when your brain will turn to mush. CJD is nightmare fuel.

There are loads of people on here who have never driven cable-controlled throttles, rack-and-pinion assisted steering... I'd even guess there are a few that haven't used manual windows or hand-adjusted rear view mirrors (the kind you have to lean waaaay over to fix), and probably lots that haven't driven brakes without ABS, especially in the winter.

I can't believe I didn't think of it, but... I didn't realize that older throttles could get stuck.

I do know that power steering is literally the difference between smaller women being able to drive and not. I had an old Ford Aspire that a couple of my friends just couldn't drive because they couldn't turn it if it wasn't moving at road speeds.

I find the smartphone app menu model vastly superior to the others. I can take 10 minutes to get an order sorted out (ordering with a family takes far longer than a solo order), and I don't slow down the line of people in onesies-and-twosies who already know exactly what they want.

From my perspective, screen-based ordering from multiple kiosks with one or two cashiers is the only way forward, and although from a labour perspective it sucks for locals, it's almost definite that as the number of cashiers required goes down to below one per store, there will be a move to remote models with centralized resources (cashiers assigned to multiple stores) basically acting as intermediaries for the kiosks. It's not even a wage or working conditions issue, it's a labour requirement issue.

Right?

What are the odds that GP would post "I don't know exactly what these brain regions do, but I know that these transgendered people who had fMRI showing their brains function much closer to their identified gender should simply stop being transgendered by overriding/mastering the differences with reason and discipline."

I'm guessing zero... but because it's a study on empathy, it's totally a-ok to say "i don't know a thing about this, but since its not a problem for me, it shouldn't be a problem for you"

Somebody that couldn’t get any sleep Sunday night because of their issue isn’t going to bring a valuable, interesting, and diverse perspective to the workplace on Monday.

So... how do you react when a coworker has a baby? Basically expect them to be weak, raving lunatics for the next 1 to 3 years?

Really hope you're not one of my coworkers.

With a lot of people, once they know (or just believe) you have some kind of mental illness, you no longer have a personality or character, you have a collection of symptoms. That's a big part of what the stigma is. Yeah, don't mention it to anyone at work, ever. If you happen to be at work and a bottle of prozac falls out... that's for your "premature ejaculation" problem (which while awkward and embarrassing, is less detrimental than your chronic clinicial depression.) Risperdol? Nope, not for anything antipsychotic. That's for your nerve pain in your toes. Etc, etc.

This makes my head and heart hurt to see so many people agreeing with this.

There's a right, and wrong, time for using left joins. "all the time" is the wrong time. If you need to join on all existing records, including null records, you need the trinary equality operation.

Also... there's a right join... if you're writing complex enough stuff long enough, you'll eventually hit a query where it's just easier to do the same thing you've been doing on the right side.

I can't say for sure, because it's implementation dependant, but this is going to slow down your results on larger data sets as well, since you won't be excluding joins (in memory) by excluding data (during the selects from individual tables)

That changes things quite a bit, and definitely goes into the "none of our business, let the Ukrainians decide who is on their side" line of thinking for me, since all most of us are doing is putting blue and yellow on things and pretending that makes a difference.

I wouldn't be comfortable working with a Nazi on a line in a kitchen, just as I'm sure they'd say the same about me, but if Russia invaded here, I'd be quite comfortable "walking with him to the end of the bridge," as the other poster said. Deal with the day-to-day bologna after you've dealt with the once-in-a-century bologna.

Controversial take.

"Nazis who travel to Ukraine to fight Russians are less bad people doing morally and ethically ambiguous things. Once they leave Ukraine, the actions they performed involving Russians are both unethical (because they willingly travelled there to murder conscripted teenagers) and ethical (because they willingly travelled there, presumably to defend the sovereignty of a nation they have tenuous cultural links with)"

Just wait 'til the Ukrainian Foreign Legion starts to be accused of things like massacres (whether legitimate or false reports for propaganda), then guys who were marching in BLM counter protests who went to Ukraine (again, running with the bad nazis doing good things) will have their social media histories paraded about to defame the entire foreign legion.
