Blinkist and skimming a book have their place for getting some of the key points, it's hard to find the time to read all useful books.

But I agree that to really get the most out of a book, reading cover to cover is likely most immersive, impactful, maybe followed by listening to the auduibook from start to finish.

ANC headphones are great for low-frequency (bass) sounds. But with cheap headphones I find I can still hear speech. I think new housing uses mass loaded vinyl to prevent high frequency sounds from passing through walls - perhaps heavy, 1lb or 1kg headphones with ANC are the solution for experiencing real silence in e.g. a busy workspace? Does anyone have an idea if material weight or density is a big factor in sound insulation? Along with air-tight sealing.

I found it through search on Youtube, had been looking for which way to package applications on Linux. Packaging really takes a bit of time, reading documentation and figuring out how to do it. After packaging a flatpak you need to add it to a local repository on your device before you can test install it, which isn't as intuitive as clicking on a .appimage file, but brings some benefits. Agreed for audio quality. It's hard to listen to with only the left channel working. It might be worth reuploading it with balanced stereo.

A great talk on Flatpak sandboxing was released in March. [1]. The original post is from 2018 (Flatpak 1.0). Not sure if these issues are completely fixed yet, there are a lot of release notes up to version 1.63 (stable). [2] It seems that the maintainers and community are working on improving security continuously. My main hope is that they optimize for privacy, security and user control of the packages. Overall I'm impressed by flatpak with it's cross-distribution packaging.

Just following the surveillance model pioneered by Google, Facebook etc. I'm glad tech surveillance is being covered and some awareness and opposition is visible here. Xiaomi aren't the only ones taking a mile of advantage from the inch of 'good telemetry' promoted by some companies.

Russian roulette might be an unfair comparison, but it may only be one order of magnitude different to this virus IFR.

With probability a number between 0 and 1, percentage is between 0 and 100.

From the study in your source [1] the P(death|infected) = 0.005 And Russian roulette P(death | play) = 0.16

In percentages:

Covid19 - IFR = 0.5%, Russian roulette = 16%

From this calculation based on the recent New York antibody study [2] the average IFR across all age groups is 1.31%. (0 + 0.017 + 0.067 + 0.13 + 0.45 + 1.26 + 3.16 + 5.4)/8 = 1.31%

This is a much higher IFR than flu or H1N1 (IFR was 0.02% in 2009, 65 times less).

The graphs on this page shows the situation for NY. It is clear that the risk can't be compared with 2009's H1N1. It's sobering. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/04/10/upshot/corona...

We need to give the scientists and medical professionals and industry more time to figure out how best to prevent this. There are many reports of 40-50 day illnesses in young people due to not clearing the virus. And the poorly named 'mild' case can be rough. It's (badly imo) defined as when a patient doesn't require hospital. It should be called moderate I think. [1]

Really promising and excellent video. I hope chloroquine (or hydroxychloroquine) proves to be effective in emergency clinical trials. And that it can be readily sourced for upcoming patients if so.

All researchers, doctors should see this video & cited papers to evaluate potential.

It's worth noting that the former ICANN CEO, Fadi Chehadé is highly involved in this sale. This timeline also seems to suggest that current members of ICANN are also biased towards the sale of the .org domain, ICANN may not be interested in the views of the people who currently have .org domains.

I agree that the privacynotincluded site should have a broader set of standards but I really commend them for investing resources into tackling the truth of the huge amount of surveillance built in to a lot of these products these days. Hopefully they can improve the UI in future as it is a bit confusing. However the main takeaway at the bottom should be understood:

"Facebook has a history of betraying users' privacy and trust. They've faced record fines for this and have been caught hiding privacy breaches from their users. This is the starting point for bringing a device with an AI-powered smart camera and always listening microphone that is sending data back to Facebook regularly. They also say they do human review of audio snippets unless you chose (and take the time to figure out how) to opt out. The question comes down to, does Facebook have your best interests at heart when it collects all the data this device is capable (*fixed typo) of collecting on you. In the past--from Cambridge Analytic and beyond--the answer to that question has way too often been, NO."

One simple answer is that marketing (a.k.a. thought manipulation) works. Propaganda works. What's the advertisement/marketing spending for all these surveillance companies' products in the past 10 years? And, in comparison, what about the advertising spending for consumer awareness of privacy respect and personal information security? Combine that lopsided-ness with the general person's lack of technical/surveillance education and it's more understandable why people aren't rejecting these companies' creepy behaviour.

"Be my guest, regulate the sh1t out of it. I'll give you side-doors, back-doors, trackers, whatever you want. Just don't shut it down." Intense scene. Good decision by Germany/France on this one. This is the kind of thing has to be stopped soon because once it starts being popular it becomes more of a corporate power-capture pandemic.

Always enjoy reading these updates. It's refreshing for a company to explain their progress in this kind of technical detail, another bonus of a free/open source product. Congrats to the Purism team for the progress, looking forward to seeing the new Linux phone.

The privacy issue can happen in two ways that I can think of:

1. Unclear boundaries of data. How many points of data are being collected and sent 'home'? CPU performance? OK. Device name, pc username, usage duration, times the program is opened and closed. System account email address, IP address, hostnames contacted (i.e. websites visited), WiFi-based location, webcam stream for inference of end-user mood, microphone for emotion analytics? These are all examples of telemetry that could be argued are 'needed' for purely for product improvement.

2. Even if only a couple of data points are collected, it is very possible to identify the real name of the end user through analytics of the data. This inferred information is very valuable, and definitely is then a privacy issue.

I hope the vast majority of developers and company execs don't intend to 'do evil' with this information, but unfortunately we have seen examples of this from public companies, despite auditing etc.

"There’s only two things that will improve your situation:

1. Concentrate on your users, audience, customers, fans. Figure out what they want. Develop a deep connection with them.

2. Improve your skill, expertise, competence, product. How can you get better? How can you make your product better for the people who use it?"

There is also a responsibility for well-informed people to encourage and join initiatives that are 'good' and interesting. This is the way ethical and useful initiatives can be promoted and can 'win' in the marketplace of ideas.

This is a brilliant idea I feel. Students of history have a fairly unique position in having in-depth understanding of events. They are like cultural scientists, they work to understand facts and causality.

With applied history, they could be actively studying ways to prevent mistakes of the past. Then also, blending with the contexts of modern-day life, inform more useful ways of living in the present and future.

Here is how I think about surveillance.

Suppose your boss decides they want to run a quiet experiment on you.

They tell you to install an employee clock-in app on your personal phone and that you will be paid for your commute time if the app runs in the background.

Access to GPS, other sensors, etc. are required to install.

The privacy policy tells you that your privacy is important to your boss, and that your data will only be used for analytics purposes and will only be processed by third parties for viewing and juicy gossip purposes.

Your boss then can see in real time on his laptop what shops you go to, what time you go to sleep, what worknights per month you go to a bar. Where you go on your weekends.

If this feels a bit bad, then it shows your data has value to you.

(Replace boss with -coworker, -aquaintance, -online corporation(s)... )

The good thing is that Purism has a track record. They have been designing, manufacturing & shipping privacy focused, FOSS laptops for years now.

A full FOSS/FOSH phone is new territory. They're still allowing pre-orders on their website if interested.

I'm hopeful that it will be a good Linux phone when production is done in January.
