“Profit is up 1000% and they’re creating some plants last month and hope to use advanced packaging in 2 days…” Wishful thinking and hyperbole yet again! Social media runs with these unsubstantiated claims with no verification. It’s boring and tiresome to see this versus the reality. They’re decades from being fully independent. It was only recently that Washington revoke Intel, AMD and NVIDIA licenses to export chips to Huawei.

Stop believing everything you see on social media. Think critically. Do the claims sound too good to be true? Probably are, we exist in a misinformation media environment.

Google is the new Yahoo and sliding into irrelevance. Layoffs like this cut the core engineering functions of a company. After a while it becomes harder and harder to innovate and create meaningful products. Offshore teams can never replicate or replace these functions. This is crazy and the executives are clueless. Bring back Larry and Sergey now before it’s too late!

What can be described as “Western Civilization” is a much bigger cultural zone than we define it. Historically people also never really divided the world this way. It’s just modern academics that screw these concepts up completely, have obvious agendas and lack context. Europe, North Africa and Middle East are all part of “The West”. The regions were only ever divided at various times by empires, language groups and religions. The author of this article is disingenuous with their argument at its core as a result. Musical traditions from Baghdad are still western. This is why music could influence other music because these were all western musical styles.

Edit: Wanted to add that the alphabet is a western linguistic concept that’s common to all western languages.

Because you're looking for a very specific language or tool experience and not capabilities. This is a common mistake. Many developers might have loads of experience in the problem domain your company needs but not a specific language or framework. Like you do integrations for banking clients. You look for a Java developer and find someone who knows the framework you're using but they've only ever developed APIs for mobile apps. Instead look for the person who might have done some Java a lot of Cobol and has worked with mainframes and banking systems. That person might have even been a sysadmin and learned coding but they'll hit the ground running.

This is a bubble and one that will burst very hard. AI is the perfect technology for this. It's opaque and most investors (who barely understand tech in general) have no clue what it really does or how it works. This is the closest we've ever had to multiple large respected tech companies selling "snake oil" a cure all. The capabilities of AI they mention as if they're available today are literally many decades and generations away. Automating information workers, creatives and engineers will take AGI that's simply impossible with our technology.

When the AI bubble bursts I wouldn't be surprised if takes down major tech companies with it.

The problem is Chinese companies are subsidized by their government to manufacture things of little or no intrinsic or critical value. Automated vacuum cleaners and consumer drones are niche electronic novelties. Electric cars using solid state batteries are also novelty that will be obsolete once electric engines that use liquid fuels become mainstream (fuel-cells).

The purpose of subsiding what are zombie companies is to maximize employment to ensure internal stability. The wins these companies show are propaganda wins only and don’t make the country more competitive. Foreign manufacturing is also migrating out of China at an alarming rate as shown by falling exports and GDP growth.

None of the development in the Chinese technology sector is sustainable. These companies would never survive on their own without subsidies and are dependent on them. It’s a cascading failure waiting to happen in the Chinese economy and will likely be a global shock. At least the Americans may appear to take longer to develop winning companies but once they do they tend to be sustainable and long lasting as organic enterprises.

Edit: The American free market is working as intended because it rightly values robotic vacuums as useless devices.

No it's not real engineering at all but a different thing altogether. Engineering is the application of hard sciences like chemistry, physics and biology to solve real world problems. Software development can be part of what an engineer does to solve that problem but it's not engineering in itself. Software "engineering" is actually applied mathematics particularly logic to program a computer to complete tasks organized as algorithms. This is why some algorithms and functions in software can be proved via mathematical proofs.

Jokes on the writer because Buddhism originated in India and evolved from Hinduism and spread as far as Southern Russia and Central Asia in addition to East Asia and Southeast Asia where it become popular. Ignorant people everywhere these days get to write articles who don't have basic history lessons. We learned this in high school also about Ashoka and how the Indian emperor spread Buddhism literally everywhere in the world. But whatever racists aren't known for their learning, understanding or intelligence.

Civil forfeiture is a direct and obvious violation of the US Constitution and shouldn't even exist under the USA legal system and is dangerous to the US legal system:

"Article the sixth... The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."

Police under the US Constitution have to go before a judge and court and make an Oath under perjury of law describing the items to be seized. There has to be a justification and supported by affirmation meaning evidence and supporting facts. In the case of the building that was seized it was operating a perfectly legal business under state law. It had the necessary licenses and permits. There needs to be a direct challenge against this type of extra-judicial seizure in the US Supreme Court as it's a clear challenge to the entire operation of the rule of law and legal system.

The simple verification aspect of unit tests makes writing code easier and more purposeful in my opinion. At a most basic level it's kind of like a small informal proof. When the code base get's complex and larger in size this is invaluable if unit tests are written correctly. Tests have to make sense and be written well just like any other piece of code.

It also helps form thinking about test cases and logic before writing code. Before I used exhaustive unit tests I would just start writing code right away and often times this would result in constant refactoring as the code evolved or during debugging. But unit tests encouraged me to scaffold out abstract functions and write tests before implementing the code. It got me thinking about what the logic and workflows then implementing the functions meant having the tests pass as verification.

Seems like the GNOME strategy is to prepare the desktop environment for unconventional mobile form factors rather than workstations. Which is bewildering and confusing because I wouldn't think to use something like a Linux distribution on anything but a workstation. Though in my opinion Windows (WSL) and MacOS (UNIX) provide elegant developer experiences and advanced capabilities for workstation machines.

It's hard to say where GNOME fits in these days and if it's still relevant. These sorts of changes are great and I appreciate GNOME's work so I have a balanced perspective. Steam Deck even uses KDE Plasma and not GNOME so I don't know other than Endless Mobile where GNOME has opportunities to deploy this other than as a sort of proof of concept demo.

I think you're generalizing too much.

These are AI/ML researchers, and so you can probably talk about that area at Meta, but it doesn't apply to other departments necessarily.

When you look at their products as a whole at their root are essentially AI/ML driven or rely on the capability. This is very relevant to and applies to those that are most directly revenue generating like advertising.

I can easily imagine a lot of AI projects being canned or back-burnered like that now. What's ML used for at Meta? Feed recommendations, social graph inferences, face identification, etc? All those are under heavy scrutiny, and a lot of the work of doing it "right" is not even an ML question at all, but one of policy, regulation, and product

Correct due to multiple factors there's little growth or innovation possible in the main products that Meta generates revenue from. Right now they only sell a single product which is advertising.

Metaverse is a highly speculative venture that may not work and there are companies like Sony, Nintendo or Microsoft Gaming that are better positioned to rely on existing technologies, platforms and synergies that have a major edge here.

That's why I would interpret AI/ML researchers leaving as a sign that Meta's best days are behind it and Metaverse is an act of desperation.

When these sort of highly sought after researcher and ML/AI talent begin to leave a company in large groups even if it's just a small number of people at first it's a sign that something is profoundly wrong at that company. These people work on the long term big roadmap items and can typically see the the future initiatives clearly. Essentially means that innovation at Meta has slowed to a trickle or has completely dried up.

Xi will survive anything, he's the leader for a life term until he decides to step down, nothing will happen to him. Putin is a fool if he believes that Xi pull put Putin's personal interests in a barbaric part of Europe ahead of Chinese corporate interests. Documents like these are filled with language that means nothing. Chinese government always publishes these things and then does something completely different.

Nations no longer matter at all what remains are networks of interconnected multinational corporations. These networks are based and administrated by governments that exist solely to provide services to their corporate clients and represent their interests globally. USA vs China competition is a quaint and an obsolete notion. The world hasn't worked that way since the 1970s and the end of the Cold War marked the end of major nations being sovereign entities as capitalism prevailed.

EU is still paying Russian corporations for oil and natural gas and the existing pipelines keep running and will keep running as long as the Russian oil fields have supply. This is an essential input to EU based corporations especially manufacturing and heavy industry. Chinese corporations work closely with their American corporations using a single global financial system that's been around for over 75 years. These corporations compete fiercely in markets but their boards and officers are best friends and know each other by first name basis.

US/EU/UK are the maintainers of this global financial system and bear the costs of maintenance and regulation. This works for Chinese companies as China doesn't have to take the costs of maintenance and can enjoy the benefits for free. It's a gift from US/EU/UK to China and they appreciate it and love Dollars/Euros to buy nice mansions, yachts and other luxuries.

China and USA governments engage in political theatre to keep their people motivated to work and further corporate interests which benefit them mutually. War is very bad for business and the Chinese government especially Xi is very disappointed with Putin's stupid and reckless activities.

Creating a parallel financial system will take decades if it's even feasible at all. The entire global economy relies on the US/UK/EU based financial system and has evolved around it for over 75 years. It's not something that can be simply torn out and have a drop in replacement like a software system.

Any alternative system would likely be based in China and that would mean that currencies would be backed by China's debt. China would need to take on debt levels that would leave China in an impossible situation. It would mean crushing levels of taxation that would drain China's wealth to the benefit of nations like Russia. There would be a major imbalance in payments. Russia and other nations would make net gains and China would have net losses. Even seizing assets in these nations China would need to sell the assets internationally using the same US/UK/EU system that provides the liquidity and access to markets.

It would require China to become even more reliant on business with Western nations to fund this system making the whole thing illogical and circular in structure. If the Western nations pulled out of Chinese manufacturing it would mean the US/UK/EU could collapse the whole parallel system over time and make it insolvent.

Anyone who does any gaming at all will know that for regular non-mobile gaming it's all Playstation, Xbox and Steam (PC). Few platforms will ever beat these three. Microsoft has their own cloud gaming service which is already available on Xbox and I doubt anyone else can compete against Microsoft in this space given their experience and platform advantage. Publishers are already signing deals with Microsoft to host their own cloud gaming experiences. But GeForce Now is never going to take off, gamers don't care and most don't even know it exists. Sony can't even compete against Microsoft at this point as they're too far behind and they're arguably the top console platform right now so the barrier of entry is amazingly high.

Stadia succeeding on it's own is just a bonus and I'm sure Google would like it to. But the real purpose for Stadia long-term is for Google to build out a cloud gaming capability on Google Cloud and sign major publishers to compete against Microsoft. Then when they have enough cloud gaming revenues coming in they can quietly sunset Stadia. This is all about keeping parity with Microsoft's cloud Azure the second the leading platform after Amazon Web Services. Amazon also has a games division with a similar purpose to lose money for a long time on cloud games from it's own studios as a way to build capability.

Google is dying because people are searching Reddit using Google and the data generated to conclude Google is dying is drawn from Google search volume stats for labels and keywords available on Google and trends...ok.

Wall Street thought he was a loser too after we was fired as CEO of Apple and just another dumb founder and he should sell his company to IBM. This story repeats again and again. Steve Jobs proved them all wrong and now everything Apple does is brilliant and they should buy Peloton.

Peloton just didn't wine and dine and wow Wall Street enough for them to consistently hype the stock and now it's the CEOs fault? Because he didn't create the "magic show" that Wall Street wanted to see? John Foley is a founder of the Peloton business and created value from nothing to a leading fitness technology company. Why should he have to justify anything he does to asset managers who have never created any value in their entire careers? Wall Street only destroys value and extracts they don't create anything.

You're a founder and your business goes through a few rough years as you build the business and experiment? Wall Street says "quit, give up and sell". What a bunch of Wall Street hacks and they pushed out a perfectly good CEO, really sad. Just so the business could be sold off for a fraction of its' real value to some conglomerate to let it wither away and die.

The web is fucked 5 years ago

Like every tool and technology it's how you use it that counts.

My memories of Web 1.0 were not so fond. It was a rogue's gallery of low quality websites that lacked any sense of security and much harder to tell if something was official and legitimate. People who never used the web before were easily scammed. That's why most people stayed within the AOL walled garden. Remember most of my friends used the open web to download warez (games/apps) which was usually loaded with viruses and we were on Windows and not on MacOS/Linux yet so it was easy to get pwned.

The progression to Web 2.0 brought about social media but it also brought about web apps. We could now build really useful websites that actually helped users do things they could never do before. Even look at GitHub something we take for granted but is made possible by Web 2.0. The tech industry has built an incredible amount of utility and value using Web 2.0 that does not include social media or invasive tracking.

Social Media like Facebook is regressive because it uses Web 2.0 technology but using the walled garden paradigm that AOL used in the past. So it effectively is a misuse of the technology originally designed for the open web. Jack Dorsey mentioned that the future of social media is federated and decentralized using blockchain so efforts like Blue Sky will make Facebook and the centralized walled garden obsolete.

This is an entirely naive view, debt is debt even if it's domestic and funded by government funds. Evergrande is one of several high profile defaults now occurring with major property corporations in China. Cascading failure even slow failures will impact the national economy in really bad ways. These failures happen slowly and gradually and then all at once towards the end of a nations downward spiral.

A nation that overproduces manufactured goods but has to import food from foreign nations to feed it's own people and braces with power cuts even it's most industrial areas is in trouble. Put in a toxic debt scenario, reliance on foreign states for energy, worsening foreign relations and a pandemic and you have a recipe for cascading effects. This is the same path that the Soviet Union took and at one time they had taken lead in many areas such as space exploration. The Soviets also had the advantages of energy independence and plentiful natural resources. China has no such advantages and doesn't nearly have the overwhelming global power that the Soviet's did at their height. The Soviet Union could have been described as a global empire something that China hasn't yet achieved.

What makes the impending China collapse worse is the magnitude of debt levels and the impact on the global economy due to China's deep integration with it. They won't just go down but will take all other industrialized nations with them.

There's no government functions in China that have any ability for transparency, accountability or self-criticism. China's current militant "wolf-warrior" stance in world affairs telegraphs it's own insecurity. They internally know they're failing and the risk is increasing but can never admit it or take corrective actions because that would mean admitting their top leadership have made mistakes.

This is true and Microsoft is known to be a company that has many product groups that are often in direct conflict with each other.

Cloud Services is the "cool" Microsoft and their cloud services are now the biggest profit center for them. They have Azure, developer tools and contribute a huge amount to the overall open-source world. The majority of their customers run Linux workloads and things like Kubernetes. Cloud folks at Microsoft don't care if you run Linux or MacOS as long as you run your web apps on Azure that's all they care about and they try to make it as easy as possible. These are the guys that developed Microsoft's first internal Linux distribution.

Satya Nadella comes from the Cloud/Azure part of the business. That's why Microsoft has been doing some really innovative and smart choices lately under his leadership.

The Windows group are the luddites at Microsoft. Instead of open-sourcing Windows and treating it as open technology something the Cloud group would love they still jealously guard it as proprietary. They only put WSL (Windows Subystem Linux) because the Cloud group wanted it. Windows group is living in the 1990's and still thinks you can make money on a desktop operating system. They put ads and use dark patterns because they're desperate to show that Windows can still make money. Their CEO is now one of the Cloud guys and for them that sucks.

Finally someone posted something logical and well reasoned, thank you!

Content creator protections and guardrails go both ways and can protect both the producers of propaganda but also the small independent voices of dissent too. People don't realize that voices of dissent can be shouted down or terrorized by trolls and harassment. Imagine a scenario where a small content creator speaks out against powerful governments. These governments have their online propaganda farms troll that users content with dislikes and hateful comments designed to scare them into deleting it. The dislike ratio is then used to downvote the content so it doesn't appear in people's recommended watch lists a form of censorship in itself.

I'd rather have a platform both protects the powerful and the vulnerable equally well than a platform that protects neither or only one of them.
