As a long time diabetic (t1d) with direct relatives also afflicted with this horrible disease, it’s frustrating that we often miss the key factors in insulin resistance and fail to see how they fit in.

The level of serotonin and its interplay with our current level of immune response/inflammation in our body is the single best predictor of insulin resistance. That’s simply because every good thing you can do to lower resistance increases serotonin. Serotonin then decreases inflammation. When you exercise for a long period of time you are not only increasing your immediate availability of serotonin, you are also increasing your daily availability for serotonin.

Obviously it’s a little more complicated but from a big picture standpoint, either something is increasing inflammation in you today and increasing your insulin resistance or (hopefully) the opposite is happening and serotonin is moving your insulin through your blood stream like a mag lev train.

On a side note, I do love cgms.

I believe it's about integration with RCS. Now, I don't know much about rcs but presumably it's similar in features to imessage. So Google wants Apple to adopt RCS so you can send "blue" messages to others outside Apple's network.

Edit: minor punctuation.

Woah woah woah. The sentiment here is pretty wild for me. Creating a platform that offers a free tier is a BUSINESS decision. Replit knew what they were doing bringing all of those free ‘customers’ online. They didn’t do it out of the goodness of their heart and they have to deal with the very real/costly aftermath of a bait/switch. Perhaps we should be used to this rug pull by now but that’s still what it is. I’ve never used replit but have been in the position to decide on creating a freemium model and I knew quite well what the consequences would have been. The idea that were saying it’s the users fault for falling for a tactic that’s origin is “yo man, try this … first hits free” is crazy to me. Now get off my lawn.

For those who think that you can simply build something “fluid” or “flexible,” it’s a lot harder than it seems. A lot of the industry jargon comes from print and the printing process; margins, padding, kerning, spacing, etc. There is no such thing as a fluid layout on a printing press (as far as I know :-). So we are stuck with a language to describe design based on a different era. Additionally, in the design phase you HAVE to select a layout/viewport for proofs and examples. Which in turn the client will expect to look exactly right on every surface. There is obviously room for client education and pushback but fluid designs seem like an afterthought in html/css where we are adding new features on top of html/css that are best used in a fixed width based system.

This is exactly what happens. Especially if your voice is in the minority Or you’re the only one. You’re seen as a trouble maker. We all know what happens to trouble makers when margins are on the line.

My understanding is that the goal (if not there already) is that you can use wasm tech just like docker/etc. The value prop is wasm would be lighter and have other built in benefits with the adoption of newer browser (security) features like sandboxed file system integration. This would be made available without the overhead of chrome per se. forgive me if I overstate something but this is the gist.

This! So this. We also need to reestablish “chronic” as a word with only bad connotations; not something that means it’s ok to live with chronic diseases like t1d or x-arthritis’. Solving the overactive immune system will solve an outsized portion of what’s afflicting western populations. Depression, chronic fatigue, any auto immune disorder, etc.

I am a 25+ year type 1 diabetic who shares this disease with my mother and brother. I can tell you with certainty whenever you have an increase in insulin sensitivity it has to do with an increase in serotonin in your blood. Anything that increases serotonin; alcohol, certain drugs, exercise, etc will increase insulin sensitivity. Serotonin not only modulates but also increases insulin effectiveness.

As a type 1 diabetic for 20+ years, I feel like two large but underrated issues in the overall sugar conversation are (1) the functional aspect of fiber and (2) the rate of consumption and its effect on the body (e.g. drinking a SSB all at once).

The body just has trouble dealing with a large amount of both insulin and sugar at the same time. When we reduce fiber intake the issue compounds.

Simply spreading out your normal daily sugar consumption throughout the day (you know, chew your food slowly ;) would have huge benefits in terms of your body's ability to convert glucose efficiently (what's at the heart of the type 2 diabetes epidemic). Add fiber back into the equation would also help this immensely.

I say all this to say that we shouldn't ignore the machine like qualities of the body in the discussion. Think about your intake rate along with the overall consumption.

Probably something like MS or another auto-immune disorder that could be microbiome and/or dopamine related. Could also be type 1 diabetes, RA, Crohn's, etc. Those would be my guess.

I am also interested in this question but would also love to know the average percentage people are paying. It’s always been interesting to me how stripe (and the like) are basically a premium over less polished tools like Authorize.net but are able to charge as much as a percentage point more for basically the same thing.

I’ve built payment integrations my entire 20 year career and have always appreciated how ease of use relates to cost, e.g. it’s hard to build tools as easy to use as stripe or Braintree, but I’ve wondered how these features play out when it’s so close to the actual money itself.

This exactly. I’m too tired to do some basic googling for citations but anecdotally speaking, I believe hiring financial oriented leadership like this and trimming the organization of “perceived” fat (management) is right out of the going public playbook.

It looks to be using Wordpress (at least for the front end code, and why would you only use WP for that?). I see lots of references to Visual Composer.

Am I the only one who wishes they would continue their v1 system work? It Just Works(tm) and was wonderful to use and easy to understand, especially from a pricing perspective. I feel like the gas pump style pricing for their serverless offering is shoehorning a pricing model that works well for vendors but less so for users. With that said, I really enjoy these guys/gals’ work and would love to work more with their platform.

Atom 1.33 8 years ago

Anyone know what light ui/theme they are using in the demo/screenshots here? Is it simply the packaged atom light theme? It looks beautiful.

Palm 8 years ago

FYI: https://www.palm.com/about

They reference/sort of say they are the original Palm.

Also, you don’t need another phone line/connection. It will use your same phone number. I’m sure Verizon will figure out a way to charge for it but it looks like it won’t be a whole new line.

We’ll see I guess.

As an owner of a small company who buys a few macs a year and uses one almost solely, I fully agree with this. I’ve had to replace my latest mbp computer two times now based on keyboard issues (the second time was power and keyboard issues). The keyboard is a disaster. If you have kids, forget about it.

The real kicker here though is that it IS possible to have registered a separate email address in gmail with a dot. My wife has been dealing with this in the opposite, she has a valid first.last@gmail and another person has a separate firstlast@gmail. She has the dot but frequently gets emails for the non dot address. We’ve gotten to know the person over like 10 years. If we’re victims of some sort of con game, then they’re certainly in it for the long haul...

Hey Kurt - Fly user here, I’m definitely a fan of your toolset. It has made last mile/server availability management really simple for us. Above, when you mentioned toying around with various oss faas tools, which ones did you all try out? Any lessons learned to share?
