I think this is an excellent piece of journalism. I'm still digesting it. Its rather subdued and blunt. I don't know if its... layered... I don't know how I SHOULD feel about it... but I know that my first impression is that it is masterful in its tone and I agree with the sentiments expressed and the overall tone.

I used to go tour Williamsburg as a child. I used to love the shot towers and the tricorns and the proximity to the beach. I used to love the ferrier and the the legislators and the town harlot. I had been to jamestown and I had been to my own family's homestead which predated Williamsburg and their delicious recreation of a duck potpie. I respected Jamestown and I like to think even as a child I knew the recreation for what it was, the type of people who'd be there and yes, I too, would rather be wearing a uniform and protecting ponies on assiteague but creative anachronism at jamestown pays better because more people want to visit pocohontas than get yelled at for swimming with horses.
I guess my point is hackers are like ren faire workers these days. the problems are and have always been people not who works for them.

Real time data is useful for 2 reasons:
A) Phonebanking redistributing your limited resources to GOTV on election day. B) Responding to incidents with legal council on the ground to contest potential fraud ASAP
So how does fraud detection work? Why do you think they sink millions and millions of dollars into polling. Long before election day both sides have a pretty accurate statistical model and break down of how each district will vote and the thresholds of deviation from that model which will set off "Fraud!" bells.
This is also why the NSA probably doesn't manipulate Federal Elections.
This is also why no one would bother to take the risk to get real time results. Its not valuable enough information. Campaign technology staffs have been working (I know, I helped) and will continue to work on ways to collect exit polls on the spot via hand helds or other means as close to real time as possible... just to get a statistically significant indication of whether what's happening on the ground deviates from the model far enough to allocate resources.
The hidden premise of that, of course, is that we're done studying physics. Or the brain.

There are (in the software world) far more instances of bosses who hire you to build a brick wall without the money to do so and put you on net 60 hoping they'll somehow come up with the money by the end.
The more likely scenario in software is you get to day 45 with 90% of the wall built and the client asks you to hand over your key to the job site and stops taking your calls.
There's where most of the "half built walls" in my industry come.

1) I don't know what country you're from, but in America here is how it works: In general, competitive colleges require at least two years of foreign language classes in high school. Stanford would like to see three or more years, and Harvard urges applicants to take four years.
When a college recommends "two or more" years of a language, they are clearly signaling that language study beyond two years would strengthen your application. No matter where you apply for college, a demonstrated proficiency in a second language will strengthen your application.
Students who have just the minimum can win admission if their applications demonstrate strengths in other areas. Some less competitive schools don't even have a high school language requirement and assume some students will simply study a language once they get to college.
If you score a 4 or 5 on an AP (advanced placement) language exam, most colleges will consider that evidence of adequate high school foreign language preparation (and you're likely to get course credit in college).
2) Foreign language requirements are originally a product of enlightenment era education curriculum and have been kept afloat with notions that in a globalizing economy candidates who can work internationally will garner higher wages and be more productive. This is true, to a degree, but wouldn't you rather work for a Swedish web design firm from your US based coffee shop?
