Could it actually be that the United States is in a plain old recession?

I know the stock markets are higher than ever due to AI investment. But the real economy may not be in a great shape hence the layoffs.

While the cause may be not be AI, but instead policy, e.g. tariffs. But also multiple conflicts ( Ukraine , Iran, Lebanon), leading higher oil , gas, critical raw material prices. China heavy exporting economy but not having domestic demand to fuel growth and bilateral trade with other countries.

All leading to less consumer consumption, slower economy , more layoffs to cut costs, less consumer consumption etc.

So no ai related but many external factors at the same time. But ai is hiding the pain due to the high stock market valuations. Which may explain that despite all the usual recession symptoms we aren’t treating it as a recession.

I am curious what other think.

Good article, sometimes a bit hard to read with all the links to other blog posts.

However there are some good nuggets in this article like this one: "That’s when I realized: we’d built a dependency on one person’s specialized knowledge. And that knowledge had nothing to do with our actual product."

I see that at more smaller orgs, where they want to have technology X but fail to realize it requires a small team. Not because its a 3 man job to operate but because if 1 leaves or is unavailable the knowledge is gone. The knowledge can be acquired but it takes some time, and that in between period can be painful. When you tell them that and then they start to calculate the costs, it can be sobering.

The advice to keep the tech boring and widely embedded in the organization is something I agree with.

I really liked reading about the history of your homelab. How do you like the 3d printed rack enclosure? Is it strong enough to hold the weight and heat from the server?

If all manufacturers jump into serving the ai market segment.

Can this not be a opportunity for new entrants to start serving the other market segments?

How hard is it to start and manufacture memory for embedded systems in cars, or pc?

Man, this is such a fun project. I understand where you are coming from. You can do this with music too. There a lot of children audio books or songs where you have the same “issue” that a parent has to operate YouTube or Spotify.

I just realized a new thing what i dislike about scrum. That is this argument people bring up:

“Scrum works … if it is being properly implemented and followed.”

Sure that is with almost everything. In addition if you need an army of scrum coaches to implement scrum and you see many failures in the industry isn’t it time to rethink the process how we create software?

Maybe scrum isn’t the solution but just a stepping stone that came after waterfall.

I don’t have the source, but I read that before the Dutch VOC came there were also quite a lot of Arabic traders active in the region that brought with them their religion.

We are running opentelemetry collector in production for about a year now.

Overal I am very happy with it. I would recommend it.

Good: - I like that with Otel you can build a vendor agnostic architecture. By that I mean you could easily swap visualization tool and you are not depending on a vendors own agent. - It works. - lots of plugins, receivers, processors and exporters. - run it as deployment or run it also as agent you can get k8 metrics.

Cons: - Documentation can be improved. There is the website and then is their GitHub repo. To me it feels like the website only explains the architecture and some components, but to implement it you need to read the readme and values.yml in the GitHub repo from the various receivers and exporters. - for some it this might be a con. It doesn’t have a ui. Like Calyptia Core

I haven’t tried the auto instrumentation. That is still on the to do list.

I was waiting for this to come out. Hope to have sometime this weekend to play with it.

It is there but I wish there was a more comprehensive network of high speed rail in Europe.

Going from Amsterdam to Spain the plane seems to win on price and travel time.

One thing that isn’t infrastructure but could easily be improved is buying international train tickets. So often I see that one needs to call or you can only book one month ahead.

Surely we could have solved that by now..

I don’t know his motivations to become a programmer.

However with his experience as a CEO, CFO. He might want to look into becoming a Data Engineer, BI consultant, Data Scientist or Data Analist.

With the experience you mentioned he might be better at understanding how the “business” thinks and what they need. Therefore a lot of his domain knowledge could be applied while being in a technical role.

Most of the roles I mentioned involve some programming but often that can also be drag and drop tools.

Good luck!

I do not think there is one way how to recover because there are a few reasons why you burned out in the first place. Perhaps that is the key to recovery too. What caused the burn out?

- take time off, 3 months to a year. I took me a year before I was back to full capacity.

- use the time to find out what caused the burn out. Lack of autonomy, workload, own expectations or unable to say no. I learned that it is alright to ask others for help in this.

- realize that you are a human being, a person. In other words you are not your profession.

- this sounds soft but write down what are your values in life. Ask your self have you lived your life up until now according to those values?

- exercise. This can be short walks, bike ride, gym or CrossFit. The brain is complex but simple enough that exercise seems to reboot the system and help you to manage any stress. For me at least.

- take it slow and don’t set expectations too high. Depending on how burned out you are recovery might take a long time. Just like a burnout has been building up over the years, recovery doesn’t happen overnight.

Finally, if you do need to get back to work go from 1 hour a day to 1 day a week and build it up from there.

You could schedule a meeting with your manager and discuss the nature of your job. Ask what he thinks your role and responsibilities are and tell him what you though the job would be.

Could be that your vision and theirs might not be that far apart and you have a new project to tailor your job. But do write it down…

If the job is exactly what you do now and you don’t like it. Then it is time to apply for other positions. From my own experience I know that sticking around will not make you more motivated or happier.

It is okay to switch within 2 months, 6 months or a year.

This sounds so familiar. I used to scour the internet for reviews before buying anything. Analysis paralysis is real, and I sometimes just give up buying at all.

Over the past years, I found more bad review websites than helpful ones. I doubt there are any real unbiased reviews.

Go to google, enter the ad trap Go to your local store, you have to deal with the sales target of the store. Go to Reddit or a forum, and the people there just want to justify their purchase.

It is all fine as long as you know it.

The authors solution to just go to a local bike shop and buy a bike is in my opinion still a reliable best. I assume he got the opportunity to test ride the bike before purchasing it.

My new approach is to write down what I want from the product. This gives me clarity. I still read reviews but take them less serious.

I either order online and once I receive my package I sent it back or keep it. Alternatively I just go to a physical store and try it out before buying it.

“Be suspicious of companies that are heavily locked into the OLAP cube workflow. (Learn how to do this here).“

The opposite is true too. Be suspicious of companies trying to lock you into their selfservice of data visualization tool. I have seen many BI tool vendors trying lock their clients into their tool. As result they get unnecessary complex models running.

I find the olap a pretty good mental model. That developers and users can understand.

The sheer amount of handwritten, tailor made etl or elt pipelines is something I like to see automated or replaced with something better.

My first thought was “why not?”

I think on mobile 5g might be not as revolutionary as 3g was back then. It won’t hurt either, faster download speed , same price I am okay with that.

I know your question was 5g on smartphones but I think it has even more potential in other areas. Remote surgery or closer to home think about Drenthe, Groningen or cities like Amsterdam where optical fiber rollout has been slow (kpn). 5g is potentially fast enough to replace your vdsl or cable from ziggo and be used as a main internet line.

Personally I am not a fan of SAFe. If you see their process map it’s complete madness and an agile antithesis.

I think it resonates well with enterprises because every existing management layer or project manager may stay. They just get a new agile name.

For example, I used work for a large enterprise that was struggling to adopt agile and get management buy in. However when somebody pitched SAFe it went fast. Management was onboard, people were trained, and yes more importantly certified.

Indeed some teams became more productive, and could coordinate better with other teams. Management had some clue how this new way of working worked. Criticism I heard was that planning days were long and draining.. Either way one could say it was a success.

I would say give it a chance, it won’t hurt because people and teams will just be rebranded. Nothing bad will happen, nor anything super fantastic.

It’s good that J&J are being fined for false advertising.

What I do not feel is completely justified in this story is that the blame is put solely on the pharmaceutical.

Yes they played their part. They most likely knew how addicting their drug is from day 1 during their clinical trials.

Why is direct marketing to consumers in the USA even allowed?

Why are pharmaceutical companies still allowed to wine and dine doctors to persuade them to prescribe their drugs?

What about the other players?

Why do doctors even prescribe these heavy drugs, despite knowing that there are serious addictions risks? I doubt doctors would prescribe heroin if someone has pain.

Why do patients insist on getting the heavy drugs to numb pain instead of taking or accepting doctors advice and take a less strong pain killer and accept some pain.

I think we should have a good look at how the healthcare system is organized and scrutinize all players.
