If someone was hung up on only paying when they need care, the business model needs to support that would probably look a lot like an emergency room or urgent care facility.

For me, I consider it an astonishingly good value paying $1200 a year even when probably nine months out of the year I don’t even talk to them. Being a healthy dude I get proactive tests done twice a year to keep tabs on a couple dozen different metrics ($150 each round, all in) and inform any needed course corrections over time (early insight- vitamin d was low (previous insurance-based provider refused to order test). Later insight- eating trash and five drinks a day for 7 days at a vacation resort made basically every metric go to absolute shit; subsequently did an early test after a month of clean diet and regular exercise showed tremendous improvement across the board). And then when something random comes up I know they’re there for me.

If it sounds like the sort of thing, you might be into find a couple local providers and just have a conversation with them. I’ve yet to speak to a DPC provider that isn’t excited about the model and delighted to communicate its value to prospective customers.

It’s as close to concierge healthcare as I’ll ever able to afford and I absolutely adore that it removes the parasitic insurance from my primary care loop.

But tests are often very discounted relative to what insurance charges for them (with my previous dpc provider an entire battery of tests cost less through them than just the copay for two of them added up to).

It’s remarkable how different it is when the healthcare provider is focused on you and your health rather than on gaming the metrics by which insurance companies judge them.

I tried like hell to get a geothermal heat pump set up for it.

This entailed researching companies that make good geothermal equipment and talking to all of their preferred vendors to get quotes.

Literally every shop I talked to, and they were over a dozen that are supposed to be installing these companies equipment told me they don’t install them because air source heat pumps are so much cheaper.

Even with tax credits and rebates (which may not exist by tax time next year when they would pay out), when I finally found a company that would do geothermal, they want 120K USD for a basic system.

if I want to be able to run different rooms in different modes (entirely possible given that it’s a 5500 square-foot building) we’re talking 180K total to work in a heat recovery option.

Meanwhile the same company will do Mitsubishi H2i air source heat pump set up for the entire building for 57K after credits and rebates.

The air source heat pump solution is less efficient and uses more electricity, but the clincher for me was that the cost of each as a complete system, ground source or air source plus the cost of solar raised to drive their respective loads…. Came out as a wash over their lifetimes. Except the air source plus solar solution costs 40K less upfront than even the cheapest and least functional ground source solution.

I would genuinely love it if it were otherwise, but I have months into this and ground source just doesn’t seem economically viable at this point

The UNIX philosophy (about which there’s a book by the same name by Michael Gancarz, and which I highly recommend) Is that each tool should do one thing and do it well.

The old school init styles, whether BSD or SysV, adhere to that philosophy.

Systemd is a travesty. I think it was about a decade ago that there was a remotely exploitable root equivalent compromise in the system DS built in DNS resolver. And these days includes not just DNS but also privilege escalation and who knows what else

It’s probably fine for most people and most purposes. And by fine, I mean most people can probably use it and never see a live exploited against it.

And if you care about security, you can probably apply enough mitigating controls that it’s not gonna be a disaster for you.

But for me, defense in depth means avoiding systems to begin with and not trying to bandit over the problems with it

I’d offer one other dark pattern in the overall dynamic. Some folks, rather than being in denial about their being on the victim end of an abusive relationship, appear to be 100% ok with it as long as they themselves get to bully and exploit others lower down in the hierarchy.
