I believe they have stated or otherwise insinuated that the WDR from January 23rd is sufficient, and they will not be performing another prior to the initial launch. As for the de-stacking of Ship 24 that has occurred only to enable the Flight Termination System (FTS) after which Ship 24 will be restacked. This is in line with an April 17th launch date.

I probably shouldn't have used such a initiative word like "will". That said scaling out PaaS compared to scaling out IaaS, specifically on Azure, is almost guaranteed to be less expensive from an infrastructure standpoint. Less actual VM's to manage also translates into less overhead from maintenance activities.

At the very least it will be interesting to see if more people adopt the Azure Websites PaaS offering. I know that right now most people dip their toes into Azure with IaaS because its historically more comfortable for them.

It will be interesting to see if Microsoft uses this to push their PaaS offerings. All too often people jump into cloud services with IaaS whereas the Azure Websites offering will provide a lower cost for run while allowing easier scale out, management, and tie-ins with other Azure services like Azure Storage (various types), HDInsight (Hadoop), and Azure Machine Learning.

Its not really so much of a differentiator. At least not without some additional clarification.

My personal opinion is that there is a divergence product types between traditional AWS offerings and their new desire to break into traditional Enterprise offerings. The Workspaces and managed Directory Services are nods to the Enterprise space but they are currently getting more shakes of the head back rather than nods.

Car prowl reports are generated by social networks in Seattle. Everything from Facebook groups to community based Twitter accounts and blogs. Most everyone here knows that the Police will do nothing so they have turned to a method that basically tells people when prowl rates are up in their neighborhood. I guess at least then they might have a chance to look up their insurance policy info ahead of potential breakin activity.

Assuming that someone managed to not only walk off with the device from a retailer but were also able to gain access to the device itself. What kind of data could be harvested from the device?

Most places I've traveled to outside of the US have devices similar to this that staff carry around a restaurant to complete the payment process table side. They've all been PIN+Chip devices as well.

Aside from that one would hope that they aren't storing PII or financial data on the device itself.

The need for marketing does not go away when you become as big as Microsoft and what larger marketing platform is there in todays world than social media. I'm confused by the number of folks on HN who are confused by the use of social media for marketing.

The vast majority of users will not have to worry about the distinction between versions. They will be using what they perceive as Windows. When they pick up a tablet running Windows it will be Windows and when they sit at their desktop or laptop they will be using Windows and when they pick up their phone it will be Windows. Add in the universal apps and you have even less confusions when a user can move from Desktop/Laptop to Tablet to Phone to XBOX and use the same app.

So, basically, the theory that they have nothing to do with one another is not looking at the entire ecosystem.

I'm certainly not trying to imply that it does. The TSA themselves have been attempting to use the excuse that their scans, x-ray or otherwise, are somehow incapable of detecting the difference between a real device and a modified one. I for one, having see many of these x-ray screens during travel, believe that is some kind of nonsense.

That said I think a possible interesting question to ask is whether or not a scanning system could be implemented that is able to determine whether a devices internal components have been modified based on scans provided my OEM's.

I think their premise is that a device which has been converted to a bomb large enough to cause total destruction of its target would have had the majority of its components removed thus rendering it non-functional. Following that "logic" a device which powers on has a much lower chance of being an explosive device.

Just getting into development so its slow going. One of the ideas I am working on is a service which will provide a "one stop shop" to manage rental properties and rental relationships. It will includes things such as listing rentals, managing the viewing process, tenant verification, legal documents, and all financial transactions including the ongoing rent payments.

"Landlords" and "Tenants" would set up profiles which will be used to match prospective tenants with listings and vice versa.

Some of the key aspects of this concept are the creation of a marketplace to encourage rental unit upgrades, community management both for large apartment/condo complexes and geographical communities with large concentrations of rental units, and tie-ins with third party services / various partnerships.

As the old saying dictates Mars certainly isn't a free lunch. However, I wouldn't necessarily agree that we have solutions to the problems I mentioned. I'd agree that we have some potential solutions most of which are in very early stages and often quite expensive. Both issues have kept wider adoption from occurring.

I'm hopeful, based on organizations such as SpaceX, that these innovation vacuums will continue to be filled by private organizations rather than via government agencies. Not only do I hope that will be the case I think at this point when considering the financial state of most governments around the world it appears in my mind to be the only real working solution.

There really needs to be more, very public, displays of stories like this one. Whenever I hear someone ask why we should invest in missions to Mars and/or the Moon this is the kind of thing I think about. How many amazing things that we take completely for granted were created in order for us to send humans to the moon and live in space?

Setting our sights on harsh and distant destinations creates a massive vacuum of technological innovation. I firmly believe that solutions to energy, hunger, conservation/human impact on ecosystems can be found on our journey to the further reaches of space.

Trying to make sense of it in my head I can see where Oculus brings the VR technology Facebook may bring the data to create virtual worlds? Surely they will operate as separate entities like Instagram and/or WhatsApp. It also may be good to have a solid financial backer who is also a company who moves quickly.

So long as the device doesn't turn bright blue and Facebook doesn't hinder the forward progress of Oculus VR we might as well sit back and hope for the best.

This is definitely accurate from an Amazon standpoint. AWS was created as a separate product/business. At present Amazon is undertaking an internal push to leverage the AWS business to replace some of their long standing (and aging) "private" infrastructure.

They are becoming more and more popular in tech companies around Seattle. I personally own one from GeekDesk which ran about $900 and I've seen other versions go up to $2000. Something like this at a much more reasonable cost could allow for them to grow in popularity with ease.

Its an ipad mini mini. I would classify it as "stunning" except it looks just like everything else that comes out of Apple.
