I thought this might be an interesting read but was super put off to be greeted with a long screed moralizing over my choice of browser. I have 3 different browsers installed that use for various situations and reasons. Getting shamed by an internet stranger is not one of them.
Tools such as babel, webpack, esbuild, postcss, etc. are now considered a bit low-level, and usually do not need to be set up manually these days.
Rather, one would opt for something like vite, the spiritual successor to react-scripts, that bundles all of these tools together with some good defaults/plugins, a means to configure them, and usually also some kind of dev server with hot module reloading, for a complete developer experience using your preferred toolchain.
Check out 'parcel' for something pretty modern, universal, and low effort, IMHO.
Writing the GmailFS HOWTO, and fixing a bug in the process, was my first exposure to the power of OSS. Looking back, I'm pretty sure this is what led me to persue software engineering as a career!
I setup a double entry bookkeeping solution for my LLC that uses Amazon QLDB as a block chain ledger. Not sure if this really counts, but it seemed like a good use case for the tech. I used amazon-qldb-double-entry-sample-java as a starting point if anyone is curious.

I have been a professional contractor for the past 12+ years, and programming since I could reach a keyboard. This last year I've been grooming a business partner in order to make an attempt at moving up the value chain from "Software Engineer" to "Software Developer" (implying ownership of the results).
I believe we have developed a strong process, which puts a Lean spin on rigid PMI-style management. We describe it as moving slowly in the right direction over moving quickly in the wrong one.
We are looking to test this process of project management in the real world, possibly even for free, with early adopters willing to provide us quality feedback.

TotalWar franchise works great in native Linux/Steam. I think I even got better performance than when I played the same (Shogun 2) in Windows on the same laptop. Kudos to CreativeAssembly for backporting all the old releases to the platform. One day all my old purchases just showed up under Linux and was installable without any fuss using the steam interface. Oh yeah, Civilization 5/6 showed up as well. You may want to take a look at what's been added recently. You might find something you like!

That's modern society in a nutshell for ya. It seems like the priority is more about virtue signaling than it is about seeking truth and justice in all things.
I've been developing software professionally for a little over 12 years, and believe myself to be a fairly component. About a year ago I was flown in for an onsight interview for a fairly high level Sr engineer position at upstairs Amazon. During this interview I was handed a blank piece of paper and a pen to implement a fairly trivial programming task. I couldn't even put a couple nested for loops together. I guess over time it just becomes musscle memory. I was totally befuddled even just trying to write a curly brace.
I bet came across to them as totally incompetent fool... "Slipping through the cracks of multiple pre-screening technical interviews before the onsite..."
FYI I would happily pay a modest yearly subscription fee to any service that would save as much time as yours potentially does. Keep up the great work!
Have you had a chance to check out the Screenplay Pattern at all? I have had great success using Cucumber to stitch together common abilities/actions/question types. My step definitions usually consistent of a single line of words grouped by a few parentheses and commas. Groovy/Kotlin make this particularly nice.

I mean, just look into the level of detail he puts into his writeup on the pathfinding algos [1]. SC4 is a whole region simulator with multi-city economics in play. Runs in Linux on Wine. Best damned $20 I ever spent.
I have gotten many years of enjoyment out of SC4 and the NAM Traffic Simulator [1]
There is (or was, I suppose) a vibrant and diverse community of SC4 modders. Really cool stuff to be found there.

True. What I usually do is point out the amount of hours it would take to get a PhD on average, and compare it to the number of hours I've spent furthering my education and honing my craft. It is in fact more time spent than it would take to obtain a PhD.
JWT tokens are irrevocable by design, or it would defeat the purpose. I would advise against issuing JWT token which are long-lived. Using "refresh tokens" are generally more prefered, as this gives an opportunity to revoke a stolen token in active use by the attacker. Even 7 days seems like an excessively large session time. That is 7 days a stolen token can be used to forge an authenticated session.
DevDocs is great for offline documentation, and is entirely a PWA. You just preload the doc sets you're interested while online, and they will always be there for you when you need them. Automatic updates can be enabled for when you come back online.
Maybe it is because I can't seem to hold onto a device for more than a year or two before I lose it somewhere, but the idea of having all my important invoice data on a single device sounds scary to me. I would hope that localStorage is included in in iCloud backups.
Is cargo known for build problems? I've never used it before now and I took a shot in the dark with `sudo apt install cargo`, then `cargo install broot` went off without a hitch. I just had to add ~/.cargo/bin to PATH and I was good to go. This was in WSL no less.
Is this experience atypical? I've actually been running through the getting started guide for rust-lang as it left a positive impression on me. Something like this in C land seems unachievable.
Not sure why the downvotes. Comradesmith's assessment of rot13 is absolutely correct. Clearly rot13 is more like PGP, in that you can recover the plain text from cypher text.
One day I was board in comp sci and decided to CD into drives a - z. Found a bunch of Novelle NetWare utils sitting on a hidden drive. One of them listed all the users on the system, while another sent back generic user info. Thing is, this was a very large high school and a bunch of accounts never signed in. All you had to do was log in with a blank password and it would prompt you to select one on login. Any funny business on the network was done on a burner account. It was all just fun and games, but never did get caught. Although, one of my teachers did say the network admin sent out an email to all my teachers, telling them not to let me touch their computer. No matter. It would be foolish to login from a location that has a record of you physically being there.
I have a good friend who was diagnosed with schizophrenia before he graduated high school. It was very tragic to watch. Who was once such a bright and capable person, can no longer function in normal society. I found it very difficult to invite him places. Often times I would need to back him up in a physical fight. He wasn't violent, simply incapable of seperating reality from what he saw, often times taking the form of disturbing subjects such as women or children being raped. And being the good person he was at heart, would not let something like that go, but would rather confront it right on. At wich point the person being accused of such a heinous act would do one of two things; Realize the guy clearly has some kind of mental issue and leave the area a bit shaken but no worse for wear, or more frequent the case, challenge him to a fight, even assaulting him with deadly weapons in some cases. When he wasn't engaged in some form of direct confrontation, he would be yelling racial slurs at the tormentors in his head. And the torment was constant. I am sorry to say there was even a period in my life when I stopped being a friend and started being someone concerned with ones own social standing, wich of course in my mind, had no room for any social pariahs tagging along.
Fast forward 10 years when his mother passes away, his other family had written him off long ango, and we find our tragic hero homeless, with symptoms noticeably worse than before. being the only person he trusted, it was up to me to get him the help he needs. It was the hardest thing I've ever had to do. I gave him a room in my house, which was the least I could do really, and even helped cosign for a car. But all of this mattered little in changing his actual situation, which still seemed to be getting worse not better. The challenge for me was balancing the line between being a friend, and being just another person trying to convince him his mental model is faulty and he needs treatment. For one reason or another he absolutely refused to go. He called that place rape factory, and insisted he'd rather be homeless then spend even a single night there. And who am I to hold the definitive truth on reality? Where I saw dysfunction, he saw a "gift of sight," only a few are capable of. In the end, I'm afraid that my unwillingness to convince him he has a problem is coming more from a position of weakness rather than strength. Had I been able to convince him to get treatment, than perhaps he wouldn't be in jail today, and I wouldn't have lost the lease to my house; ultimately leading to my own homelessness to this day.
Despite all of the headaches, I learned some valuable lessons from Ben. Mostly, don't worry so much what other's think of you. Take life as it comes without being so serious all the time. And reality is not some fixed thing, and is mostly a function of the beholder.
It can actually, although perhaps a little indirectly. Off the top of my head, the credit card balance is a direct I put to both the Debt to Income Ratio (small affect), and Percentage of Revolving Credit Available (much larger affect). These are not deal breakers, but did lower the score at both places I worked where this mattered.

YMMV. I ended up losing my job of 7 years after proving incapable of sitting in a high-traffic area cubicle. Had a single unit office up until they decided to hand those out to the new hires in sales/marketing. They even complimented me on the quality of my work on the way out. Go figure.
I have never had to use the brakets like that when referring to a remote path in shell (bash or zsh). Is it because of the port number? Perhaps I never used a port number in the string, but im pretty sure I've needed it at some point (jenkins ran on :8080).
Based on my frequent lurking, I would guess it was due to the personal (and off topic) nature of the comment. Addressing users specifically in this way seems to be looked down upon here.
They could potentially come out ahead, if the small loss on the financial asset is less than the margin on the MSRP of a sold vehicle, vs nilch on an unsold one.
