It's a common rhetoric from someone who has no clue about financial markets (the person you replied to).

Suppose you want to invest in S&p500 so you want to buy the ETF. Someone like Jane Street can create sell you this ETF, and take care of the risk that comes along with it. For example, the price they sell you this ETF should take into account the pricing of underlying stocks. While it sounds trivial, doing this profitably (and therefore sustainably) is a tough job. And doing it competitively to offer you a good price on it is an even tougher job.

It'd make sense if you were writing out some Boolean expressions or trying to present something with formal logic. But you're writing English here so it seems inappropriate to a) ditch conventional grammar and b) pass off the criticism as "imposing their limited experience".

This doesn't make much sense, for two reasons: 1. Various ML libraries are implemented in C++ and have wrappers for respective interpreted languages. 2. Given higher-level languages can do auto-diff, c++ as a lower-level language is likely to be able to do it (and it can).

It just doesn't have as popular libraries such as python/R etc given the latter are far easier to work with + lower barriers for entry.

what’s the role of buying and/or trading individual stocks?

Loads of reasons to do so:

1. You might have enough alpha to beat the returns of an index.

2.You prefer a more market neutral strategy and construct your own basket, maintaining it over various timescales.

The fact is that most of these reasons don't apply to your average retail investor though.

Abuse of taxes is not a party-specific issue. Until laws are passed to prevent this (which is probably a multi-decade lobbying effort), it will re-occur. In the meantime, it's probably reasonable to be sour about paying taxes when it's subject to this practice by the receiver.

Sadly, this is the way it works in the UK. Welfare payments are cut by any increases in your pay. So a person who might be offered overtime for some extra money has no incentive to take it because their total take home stays the same but with the latter they miss out on spending time with their family/resting etc.

Everything tested during an MOT (except emissions, which I've never seen fail)

Don't think this is true, I was looking at the MOT record of a car a few days ago and emissions failure was definitely stated as MOT failure reason.

Not sure what to make of this. The lend-lease stuff is hardly extraordinary, it would have been crazy if they _didn't!_. Furthermore, the US received almost a similar amount of goods in return (US received 8bln from allies when they lended out 11bln to USSR). All usual and unremarkable stuff. Furthermore, it's hardly fair to equate suppy of aid (which the US can afford because of their capitalist practices of exploitation etc) with supply of human life.
