That's a pretty flippant statement, just like the one in the main article. When did having fewer people make it junk/worthless?

The article is funny, and the cynicism adds to the humor. But as someone who was on the faculty market last year, I have to say it is not at all representative of Computer Science.

CS depts are still growing, and are helped by the growing number of students wanting to major in CS. This is requiring many/most departments to grow further. And the reason why students are wanting to major in CS, is that there is plenty of work to be found. If you are well grounded in basics, and can program well, there is ample opportunity in both big companies, as well as startups.

I'm sure you meant "is" :-)

First, I'm so glad that there are so many NFL fans on HN. Now to the article; its going to be like getting your news from blogs. When you make something accessible to the masses, the quality gets diluted .. but I'm certain it makes things much more widely available. I'm willing to bet there are die-hard fans out there who are knowledgeable enough to put out quality analysis ala the analysis on NFL.com. If you listen to all the talking heads, you might not have a great experience. But over time, refine the opinions you consume, and I suspect we'll all come away for the better. I'm all for empowering the masses !

Hah, I agree with the first commenter. Not the best strategy to advertise - dissing the mouths that feed you.

What constitutes a start up or not is obviously very fluid. And this is totally orthogonal to the point of your startup which I think is identifying design patterns in mobile app space and providing that as a service. You should save your punches for when you need them.

The 'apps are not startups' comment seems very flippant. There are many examples of good startups that are apps. But I do agree that the expectations for an average startup whose sole product is an app might not match that of a more traditional startup in terms of capital requirement, man-power, and potential revenue all of which are affected when you go the traditional route and get VC funding.

Wow, that's super cool. I wonder if this technology is being used on any earth-based applications? If not, I'm assuming there are harmful side effects that don't necessarily affect the space missions. I'd like to learn more about the negatives of this technology basically.

Also, consulting a lawyer for specific work is different from hiring an iOS programmer. You get specific help that you cannot get otherwise and the law firm is on the hook for the services provided. iOS programmers are dime a dozen. Assuming this guy is the best of the lot, I still don't see him giving the kind of concrete guarantees a law firm would provide with their service. Lastly, the value-add from a law firm consultation is different (and much more concrete) than a top-notch iOS programmer, assuming he is one.

Heh, sounds like it started out as something in between an ego-trip and a way to shoo customers away which has taken a life of its own and is now hotly being debated by the HN community. Now I'm following him on twitter to see what he's doing right :-)

I find this line of discussion dubious. What you want to know is _not_ if he has spent hours preparing but if what he is saying is correct/the best way to explain something. He might be so gifted that everything just comes to him. Or he might be the person that might suck at math even with hours of preparation. Just because he said "I dont prepare for my lessons" (paraphrased) does not mean what he's teaching is no good. There is a reason why the videos have been watched as many times as they have.

The thing that annoys me about Karim's argument is 1. There is no constructive criticism. He does not tell Sal (or me the reader) how one can make SA better 2. He has a competing for-profit venture that is a direct conflict of interest with SA and leads me to question his motives 3. He is a self-proclaimed expert with no proof of his own expertise 4. From his rant, I don't get that there is something structurally wrong with SA videos in general as his claims make them out to be

It might be interesting to have different levels of abstraction, especially for code. Many times, I'm more interested in looking at how the overall design/interfaces of a module change rather than the code inside a method. I might think of analogies to text in terms of organizing thoughts as sections.

The fact that a lot of people like the feature and want to use it for starters. If they can sell enough ads to make the hosting worthwhile, they have a successful company I'd assume.
