there's a lot of variety out there. you can spend your entire ticket dorking out on digital modes (esp if you go for general+ and have access to lower bands) like FT8, FT4, Olivia, WSPR [0] to see how far out you can get on as little power as possible and so on.

Or if you want to ease into it, you can get a ham radio w/o a license, or cheap SDR and try to receive and decode weather sats, etc [1]

making tiny WSPR boards and things like APRS [2] interest me more than ragchewing or nets on 40 or 80 meters most of the time

yes ive done this recently with both spi and i2c. it works with modules, the hardest part for me was finding the right way to create the device tree so eg, my module got the spi bus over spidev. same with i2cdev if you are not using userspace

huh, reminds me of tangent I have been in the same exact boat and did the same. Then something came up with SSL and just dragged in curl and doubled executable size. I think things are better these days in WinHTTP..

very true, i found a niche here (well 70% firmware but being able to understand and reason about the big picture of the rest) and really enjoyed it. seemed to have carved a niche out too troubleshooting basic hw level issues and delivering faster. highly recommend it to anyone who feels it isnt applicable

ive been in the misra c realm a while and romanticized ada, spark, ravenscar profile etc. i think if you have a team and problem that can go 100% in on it, its unmatched (and some industries certainly do, aviation, autopilots, internal fuze controls etc..)

in my embedded experience (small scrappy teams in contracting) c99 is just barely common place. and very welcome. 99% covers everything I've done. but for absolutely huge mcus where rust is supported, rust is probably welcome and easier to fit
