Going to western Europe feels like the US. Going to Japan from the west still feels like traveling the world once did. Its unique culture is appreciated worldwide, even from closest neighbors.
They had smartphones almost a decade before we did. They had high speed rail before anyone else . Manga and anime are now worldwide, but they were born in Japan. Kawaii has spread to south Korea and to some extent the west, but it was born in Japan. Hanko instead of signatures is unique. Bowing. Onsen. Sumo. Vending machines. Much of the food... There's countless examples.

COVID relief funds are only paying them more than their normal wage because they got paid so badly to begin with. All older generations have averages incomes significantly higher than what COVID unemployment pays. And that's despite Millennials being more educated than all of these prior generations.
It's finally given many of them the freedom and agency to choose their jobs rather than take the first thing they can find to avoid going broke. Many of these people looking for jobs were also the first laid off at the beginning of the pandemic. Why should we feel bad for companies that treated these people as disposable?
There's not a "worker shortage". Companies are complaining that they have to raise wages to attract talent because workers are shopping around and getting counter offers.
This is not unprecedented. The same phenomenon happened after the Spanish flu, and was arguably a big factor in the collapse of the fuedal system during the black death.
Wide scale destruction of jobs followed by increased demand gives workers leverage. You have a huge group of people not afraid of being jobless because they already have been.
We have to remember that 600k people are dead too. A decent chunk of available labor is gone forever.

And pushrod engines aren't that bad. Overhead cam adds a huge amount of weight and bulk to the engine. This is the only reason Chevy is still able to fit 6 liter engines into their small sports cars. Everyone else has transitioned to small turbo engines because DOHC takes up so much space.
And the modern Chevy V8's shut off half their cylinders when you're not using them so they don't waste tons of fuel either

C is a terrible language. It's portable assembly. I've done some small OSS projects in C and as soon as I realized Rust was stable enough I tossed them and rewrote in Rust.
Rust feels like a modern language, like Go or C#. C is barely better than FORTRAN.
I'm massively more productive in Rust and I don't have to worry about a million ways of causing UB or memory bugs.

Clickbait reply: Zstd is a huge advance in compression, but not for reasons you think.
Yes it's fast, yes it has a pretty good compression ratio. But it's greatest strength is streaming feature.
It supports sending chunks of data individually decodable but compressed with knowledge of previous state. Why is this so important?
Because small string compression is crap. For data < few kb, simple dictionary substitution does better than zlib.
But with Zstd streaming, compression ratio rises as more data is sent. Game changer for slow channels.
Imagine messenging over 200 bits/sec channel. You need each message to be individually decompressible. But these are short strings so ratio is terrible.
Enter Zstd. If message delivery is reliable, doable with retries + FEC, you make all messages part of a stream. By the time you've sent a couple hundred, youre getting great compression on tiny strings.
This is huge for constrained channels like NASA rover communications and more mundane IoT networks with low rates and power limitations.
You can get even bigger savings with the knowledge of what the other peer has seen in bidirectional channels. You simply compress the data from the other end mixed with yours. If you have equal data in both directions, combining the prior state this way gets you to good compression ratio terriroty twice as fast.
I have no FB connections with those who wrote Zstd, but i believe this feature was a priority design criteria. Maybe for their balloons or some IoT project, who knows. Either way its a huge advance in data compression.
Its roughly equivalent to how we stream video as diffs from last frame interspersed with keyframes. But for general purpose rather than video.
I don't know anyone currently taking advantage of such property. And you will need to strip out frame headers to make good savings. But a fun project for any of you nerds working on low data rate channels.
