But in general, nonfiction books could help you ace an interview. I wowd some people by merely talking taoist philosophy and how despite having diverse skills, there's something to be said about sticking to your role.

As someone with kids and side projects, I have doubts about "not having time".

I could do 2 hours of productivity after the kids go to sleep and I'd still have 2 hours for entertainment. I exercise too.

So let's make it even more reasonable. How about 30 minutes, 4 times a week?

So then do an hour or 2? I make progress in 30 minutes and sometimes keep going. If the point is for a resume, you could even do a 1 or 2 week sprint.

Apple doesn't advertise much outside the United States, and given Android is significantly more developer friendly, there isn't a reason for a student to learn on iOS.

I think many people are trying to determine policy decisions.

Do you shut down a country, causing starvation and lack of medical care OR do you attempt business as usual with masks?

I was literally flagged on HN last year from pointing out potential side effects of lockdowns.

It was weird being pro science and seeing this turn political. It really showed which of my friends could think scientifically for themselves, and which repeated what authority said.

I read/listen to lots of nonfiction books(30 so far this year) and the only benefit of buying books instead of using a Library is being able to write notes in them.

With digital copies I'll screenshot a page.

Not sure what is better, both seem to have their problems. Underlining requires flipping through every page. Screenshotting gives you more and less information than you need.

But library digital books are free and don't require transportation to obtain.

As a side note, read science, history and philosophy books. It's mind boggling how much better these books are than social media. If a book sucks, move onto the next one(or tell yourself you will read it later).

I think at the present time, software can be more like science than sociology.

Both suffer from abstraction.

I think psychology when closer to biology is similar to programming like running the programming language C experiments.

Despite insistence of programmers wanting to be scientists and engineers, it's not true to the definition.

Maybe safety critical C or assembly is engineering.

By the time any useful program is finished, there's significantly more tradition and art than Science and engineering.

If you ever want to reconsider the topic of SWE not being Engineers, here's an example.

It's typically not feasible to "wing it".

Cost, time, and Effort make it so you need to be correct the first time. mistakes do happen, but when I switched from Design Engineering to SWE, I'm allowed significantly more mistakes. These can be inefficiencies, incorrect outcomes, bugs/errors, etc... No big deal because I can recompile. Can't do that with a half million dollar in steel molds with production on a set date.

Additionally with engineering, I'll have 4 layers of management review and sign off. With programming it's subjective code reviews.
