I think that's wishful thinking, St Louis was declining way before covid. I don't see a stop of migration happening anytime here in the Austin metro or any of the other major Texas cities. We may see it in HCOL places but I wouldn't count on people leaving Denver, Portland, the NC Triangle, and the similar 'B cities'

Counterpoint as someone who group around the trades and whose friends parents where mostly in working class trades, they all stressed going to college so we didn't end up working hard like them.

My parents knew I could make really good money with welding and masonry like other family members but also knew that we were rough to our body, I had a uncle who lost an eye on the job! To someone working 8-10 hrs in the Texas heat all year wearing your body everyday and being physically exhausted by closing time. Sitting in an office and surfing HN is paradise to my old friends.

I totally agree and I'm sure the data supports it but before covid every brewery in Austin was packed with families. I actually stopped visiting many during the weekends because there would be dozens of loud kids with tired and defeated parents drinking nearby. It was annoying.

I have a mid 30's coworker who used to get most of social activity from the office and tech events and meetups (which is bad for a whole other set of reasons) but even from our fairly active work and friend group chats and you can tell he's really feeling the loneliness and depression.

He started drinking more during the week and has mentioned several times that he is very sad and can't wait for this to be all over. I know that there are thousands of people in the exact same scenario.

You also need to consider that the median tenure at these type of companies are 2-3yrs[0][1][2] (1.1 at google!). In my experience that's not enough to get the full stock grants.

So even from those that could make it very few stay long enough to make these great riches your imagining.

Straw man, almost no one is suggesting 50+ floor apartments in residential neighborhoods. Simply adding a few 4-5 floor apartments buildings with retail at the bottom would greatly improve quality of life in neighborhoods.
