Carina is a two sided marketplace for home and child care; matching consumers with care workers. We started in WA; now in MA, CT, IL, CA and headed into new states next year. We recently crossed 1 million hours worked on our platform. As a nonprofit we’re making a difference in workers and consumers lives; while saving money for public funds [compared to the cost of hospital stays and nursing homes].

We’re hiring two full stack engineers [React, Kotlin, PostgreSQL; AWS Cloud]. We’re based in downtown Seattle; for now everyone is remote but plan is to head back to the office late 2021 [obv depends on many factors].

There's no immediate [5yr horizon] automation coming to solve this. Human home care workers will be needed [and more of them]; it's in a category of jobs that not even machines want.

The true seasons we experience in Seattle provide me [and I hear this from pals in tech.] with refreshment, mental health benefits. Or, what some consider the negative aspects of cold rain becomes fresh snow an hour outside of Seattle.

Also prefer to build products in Seattle winters; celebrate releases in the spring and summer.

In Seattle Jack asked us to put our phones away; to connect with his media team later for free hi def. photos if we wanted them. Everyone was cool; made the show better.

Introduced it to my University of Washington students. It's a primitive but good tool for prototyping. Students don't have to fuss with installing an IDE, learning a new language, etc. Thank you TouchDevelop team.

This sort of 'cultural' double down is why I left. There's some talented people there - I'm thankful for everything I learned from them - but the culture is too rigid for creative exploration and [most importantly] discovery.

Get money out of news. Sure money doesn't corrupt news as badly as politics but it does bias what, how news is delivered.

And I'm not suggesting all news agencies [whatever this means in 2017] should transform into NPR or PBS clones. I like MSNBC, FOX, CNN , ABC... news but they all exist within media empires. Let's figure out how to spin them out into entities not funded from media business models. Hard problem, sure. So what. We have to figure this out.

And public ed. institutions. In Seattle most of the school district workstations are Windows 7 based.

One our teams works with this community. They have inspired and awed us.

We've used WebFlow for a couple of years; it doesn't suck and you can actually build an early stage [pre-rev] business with it before committing to a full stack team/budget.

Twitter would be useful if they gave me the firehose in my feed. Having to follow someone is so caveman era stupid. I would even pay for the firehose then let my friends spam me with their 'ads'.

Would love to see books, articles, lessons learned in the trenches from female CTOs.

Give me the fire hose - don't force me to rely on a feed of who I follow or run searches for hashtags - then I'll come back to daily use. The 'stream' of consciousness totality is far more interesting to observe, then jump into when something 'pops'. TW for news? Yawn...

I teach CS in middle and high school. Have not wasted any time on Java. My students get basic fundamentals then they are encouraged and lead to explore open platforms, frameworks, tools to solve problems. They seem much happier about what they're learning and it seems to 'infect' their thinking in other classes.

Meanwhile their peers in other schools where Java is the only curriculum are struggling or dropping out.

Yes on front-end needing some love. You have a cool product/stack but not having at least a responsive site greeting customers and talent is an immediate area [and low hanging fruit] for improvement. Especially because you're in the 'presentation' biz. Try Material + ReactJS to rebuild your site - super fast and elegantly adaptive on mobile. Also recommend tightening the copy for mobile to on device CTAs.
