I don’t know about curing loneliness but when I wrote our bot for doing code reviews I was quite thrown back by how positive and sympathetic the feedback was compared to my peers. It felt like my bot human than us humans!

Was it fake? Sure. I mean I instructed it to praise good changes after all. But it still felt good.

And now I’m noticing another effect, my human peers have started mimicking some its behaviours.

That’s how the market works. You avoid paying extra taxes than required right? Even though that denies the government extra funding. The only difference being one has been decided as wrong and the other is fine.

Can you elaborate on why ‘many large companies’ are choosing MongoDB over alternatives and what their use cases are? I’ve been using Mdb for a decade and with how rich the DB landscape is for optimising particular workloads I just don’t see what the value proposition is for Mdb is compared to most of them. I certainly wouldn’t use it for any data intensive application when there’s other fantastic OLAP dbs, nor some battle hardened distributed nodes use case, so that leaves a ‘general purpose db with very specific queries and limited indexes’. But then why not just use as PG as others say?

People practice personas everyday of their lives, the only difference in the post is the explicit labelling of them. The avatar I present here is different to how I behave in person, or how I engage at work, my friends, my family.

Nice idea though what happens is you manage to quickly recruit the person and then a month later the other job that they’ve been slowly recruited on, eventuates and they walk off, leaving you worse off than if you never hired them.

Personally I just try to find people that have already experienced years of pain of big companies and rejoice in the freedom most startups offers.

I’m not suggesting apple is doing nefarious, it was simply an example of a large dataset. I assume they’re encrypting/scrubbing all your PII as that’s their whole motto.

But unless they’re doing some voodoo magic then yes the data is leaving is your device in some form. Hence why I can view every heartbeat (aggregated by the minute) since I put on the original Apple Watch in 2015 despite changing all my devices and only restoring from iCloud. Indeed I expect it’s just part of your iCloud data storage.

Actually I just launched the health app now and I can see the app explicitly asks if you want to allow sharing your data with apple, so if you say ‘yes’ then you’re not only storing but allowing apple to query your data (minus PII).

If you’re using apple and just want a custom domain you can do so with an iCloud+ subscription. I switched away to it from Fastmail and have been happy since.

This sounds like you’re just externalising the costs of integration of your changes on to other people.

Generally we want to reduce any accidentally complexity and the way to achieve that is to reduce the latency of code reaching production. So for example you want to minimise PR/branches in flight ideally to 0. So you should be asking how you can reduce them - eg trunk based development, omitting asynchronous code reviews etc.

Your experience is different to mine. Here in Australia the status page was inaccessible. Which immediately leads to common wisdom on monitoring systems - the monitor must always be separate to the monitored.

The airports are private owned so your argument goes either way with the CEO/investors deciding to demolish whole suburbs and plonk an airport with all its detrimental effects on human health in the middle of a city. Crazy how a single/few individuals can do that.

Given the size I wonder if it’d make a practical laptop replacement for work? Just toss in your bag when you go home!

Do you have a reference on how quiet these are? I mean it’s fantastic if true but half the reason my MBP gathers dust is the noise under load compared to my (almost) silent 5950x under load. But yes it’s a big box that I have no intention of moving.

Do you have any benchmarks of the two to share against a mean to ensure its built optimally? Maybe something like https://opendata.blender.org ? It's painful hearing random anecdotes only to learn the person didn't apply thermal paste to their cpu.

Is that the US? Pricing can be weird depending on region. In AU a leaf starts at $50K, a model3 at $60K, not much difference really. The cheapest here actually is the MG at 45K. But more competitors are starting to ramp so I expect prices will drop across the board as EV becomes a commodity.

Your claim of $37M is horrifying given in slide 4 they estimate real transactions at 5/min or 7200/day.

I’ll leave you to calculate the cost per month (it’s much higher than 14c).

Take a look into micronaut too, I’ve used it for a couple things and it’s pretty full featured even though it’s geared towards micro services. Very easy to migrate to from spring too.

Is 100-150ms latency really ‘reasonable’? It’s been many years since I was gaming but I’d be surprised back then if I encountered anyone with >20ms pings. That’s assuming people are connecting to servers in the same region of course but if they’re not that’s a problem of the matchmaking service. Otherwise I’d agree though.

Some extraordinary generalisations being applied there. Given that a large number of people experienced mental health problems during pandemic lockdowns it seems highly plausible that a population would become sufficiently depressed when they know that all of a sudden, despite whatever efforts they now apply towards understanding the universe, it will be futile because another species at a not long before, similar level of advancement had applied a weapon to prevent any possible progress. Sounds pretty demotivating to me!

Perhaps you meant to conclude, ‘that’s not how I’d personally behave, or at least believe I would without having experienced such a trauma’?

Pity you tossed the book away just for that though.

My understanding is the NFT is essentially a signed object like a URL. So I think the analogy would be Vermeer signing photos of his painting. A nice thing to own sure but as the number of copies increases the market value tends towards 0.

Ok so you don’t actually remember the UI but are certainly quick to criticise it. I don’t often subscribe/unsubscribe from apps either but I just then decided to try it myself to see if the UI is truly as dark as your post suggests. So on iOS the steps I took was:

“Let’s try the settings app” “Ok at the top I’ve got my name and it says, ‘Apple ID, iCloud, Media & Purchases’ “Hmm purchases, let’s click that” “Ok a list of options, fourth says ‘Subscriptions’ let’s try it” “Oh hey here’s my apple one subscription, not so bad!”

Overall that seemed pretty sensible. Perhaps if they added ‘and subscriptions’ to your card at the top it’d be a bit clearer but it’s certainly not some horrible experience.
