I learned this subtle trick via nvm. If you use "nvm install 6" it will automatically download the latest version.

Imo I'd hold off on susy. Bootstrap is a great start for a beginner abs it's used in a ton of environments.

Unfortunately, the 'rookie move' is a fair assumption. Even if there was a small possibility of conflict: Your IP is your company and these things should have been covered.

It's a sad lesson and an emotional mistake. You didn't owe the employer/managers anything and should have cut all ties to the company especially since these projects are somewhat related.

You are both good guys for wanting to help out and it sucks that things got twisted up. I hope things work out well and I wish you all the best.

You have them sign off on the 'finished' product. Then charge for maintenance. Or if you're looking for residual income, you could charge monthly... that is to say that it's not without risks or requiring you to push back.

I completely agree with what you said. Media is putting the fear on you. It'll turn into.. 'Whether you think you can or you can't, you're already right.'. People will fail simply because they think they will.

I disagree, these 'dumb' smoke detectors are spot on.

Learning to cook, ceiling height regulations and hallucinating aren't problems a smoke detector is trying to solve.

When looking at pricing, you've got 'Croc is $5' and 'Croc is free' in your subheadings. It's contradictory and seems weird. Would be nice to clean that up.

The take-home/programming tests in general are just as bad as interview questions. You're asking senior level engineers to take 3-5 hours (at what? 100-150$ hr bill-rate) to see if they can code?

Do you like them? Check. Do you feel like they are telling the truth? Check. If you use the 'try before you buy' method: You can easily see if they can handle the job/handle the pressure.

Also, you probably aren't the only company/avenue they are applying towards. All of the calls/tests add up.

The question is though, since companies are already using take-home tests/interview questions... can anyone confirm that these methods are more effective than a 'try before you by/contract to hire' position?

I did see a few good points (Fullstack helps you understand legacy practices and why things were the way they had been..), but a lot was definitely lost in all the noise.

Moving to an area specifically for your startup, even if you were told to do so, can really show your dedication (not just by saying it). You are proving that you are willing to do whatever it takes. I've known many who have moved for the 3 months @ YC and then have rightfully moved back... I don't think any of them have regretted. YC may be looking for someone who can make it work, if there is a will, there is a way. THAT is what they are looking for.

There is a method to the madness. They have proven it.

I love the transparency here, especially for the situation. Maybe this could be good for the people who were laid off (closure?). Taking good care of your employees even after they are gone/admitting your mistakes goes way farther in marketing than some think.

I think it might be impossible for those of us who have used fountains, but now don't trust them anymore. I've seen people urinating/vandalizing fountains in Metro Detroit and would never use them again.

Agreed with all of this! Understanding when to stop/failing fast needs to be accepted. I was worried that these articles could be taken the same way as the guy who hacked a VCs voicemail because he was told he needed to 'hack stuff' and 'hustle'.

I've seen some of 'Alexis' comments and it really seems like he doesn't give a shit. 'Make something people want' amirite? what a joke.

Customer ratings for the pros doesn't create accountability unless there is an action behind it. What are you doing as a company to enforce accountability?

These articles always crack me up. This sounds great on paper, but the city is still messed up (and probably irreparable in my lifetime).

The article is talking about Downtown Detroit (as in 3-4 square miles). Detroit itself is a MUCH larger city... 130+ square miles. Not to mention... you only have 600k residents living in those 130 square miles. Focusing on 1% of the area (for the white and rich) is not going to help the rest catch up.

I've used Ionic before to build hybrid apps. The performance on iOS and Android (with crosswalk) is really impressive. For creating MVPs, Ionic was crazy fast. What would have took a month or more for native (complex UI), was prototyped in a week. I'm pretty pumped up about this tool.

Completely Agree with this. Your service is extremely easy to use and your customers will choose if the price is too much or not.

I feel like THIS is why Magic is interesting. Everyone (assuming) has SMS capabilities on their phone. I've seen this be used for banking, but nothing had the personal element? The ease of use is such a plus for this kind of thing.

In my opinion, one of the benefits of ionic is building an Android/iOS app that can be easily ported (may have to change a few things) as a mobile website. I've never had any problems using Ionic as a mobile website, but i'm unsure if there would really be any deal breaking pros and cons.
